How did a religious organization, originally devoted to spiritual practices, become entangled in massive herb trafficking? Have you ever heard about the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church and its scandalous history in Jamaica?

I remember seeing a 60 Minutes program about this ‘church’ around that time. For a long time I was confused by the ‘Coptic’ appellation of this pseudo religion, thinking there was some actuality to it. I recall the filmed images of the people all smoking weed in their religious gathering and their citation of ganja as a sacrament. Having been raised Lutheran I knew the Christian Eucharist was always made of bread and wine so this conflation of weed-smoking with it bothered me.
The arrogation of the ecclesiastical determinatives ‘Coptic’, ‘Zion’, and ‘Ethiopian’ by this large weed business is very problematic from the religious perspective. It’s an egregious example of religious hucksterism and damages people’s conscience hampering spiritual development. Many atheists were born of this disaster.

I am always finding out something new in regards to Jamaica's history. This is one piece of history however, that took me by surprise. I had no idea, this happened on the island. So basically, if this church hadn't branched out into large scale distribution, and forcing children to partake, they would probably still be going strong today. At the heart of almost every downfall... sadly greed is always the active ingredient.

‘Alternative to mainstream Christianity’ always raises red flags. Granted, Jamaica is a hotbed of religious innovation with the highest number of church structures per square mile of any country on earth, betokening a great spiritual hunger and religious devotion among the people. The anticolonial sentiment among Jamaican people of color perennially seeks religious expression and Rastafarianism seems to be the most comprehensive native spiritual movement among Jamaicans, characterized by its synthesis of Garveyite panafricanism, local neoAfrican devotional cults, Anglican, Protestant and Pentecostal Christianity and since the establishment of an Tewahedo parish in Kingston by Emperor Haile Selassie in the 1960s, Ethiopian Christianity.
The name of this sect is a large tip-off of its bogus character, bringing together Zion(ism), Coptic and Ethiopian nomenclature to lure the less-than careful shoppers for religious experience in Jamaica. The ruse appears obvious to religiously literate persons but regular people without means for advanced education and a taste for charismatic religion would be readily lured by such hucksterism. The spiritual ruin these people caused is immense, lamentable across the whole nation. What a stain on Jamaican society, Rastafarianism and Christianity!
