Seems unreal that he's 6-8 ply deep in his analysis less than a second in. And after about one more second he's intuiting a couple of variations. But that's what's possible with an eidetic memory.

Magnus has tremendous evaluation skills and that's largely developed after a zillion blitz games. There's little time to pick a position apart in detail, so one has to judge more wholistically. How good was White's Ne5 and Black's Re8? How good was White's Qh4 and Black's ...Qe6? These are the same kinds of comparisons Kasparov discussed. He called it "quality of the pieces".

@@thevoid5868"where the odds werent in Magnus favor" lmao, what? Have you seen the position the game ended in? The only move for black to stop immediate checkmate here is sacrificing your queen for a bishop, everything else loses on the spot. Even if you do that, with the positioning of the knight and the queen after it’s likely mate in a couple moves later. He was definitely crushing him at the end, whether that was due to time trouble or not.

It is not destroying the caro-Kann. It is better playing the middle of the game. Magnus is one of the best player ever (with capablanca, Karpov, Kasparov, Alekhine or Fischer of course). It is not surprising that he plays more creative game that any of his today's opponent. It has nothing to do with the caro-kann.
