Oregon Spring Tomato: Early, Prolific And Ripens In Cool Climates
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 июл 2024
- Oregon Spring is a parthenocarpic tomato that was developed by Oregon State University to set fruit and ripen in cool weather. This is a determinate tomato that grows as a small bush tomato, but the yields are off the charts - easily one of the most prolific tomatoes I've ever grown. Because they're parthenocarpic and don't require pollination to set fruit, these tomato plants are a good option for growing tomatoes indoors over the winter or inside a greenhouse as a greenhouse tomato.
Oregon Spring is an early tomato variety. Fruit size is small to medium with most in the 2-6 ounce range. I found this variety to be one of the more disease resistant tomatoes in my garden. The end of the video features a tomato taste test as part of this tomato review. If you have any questions about Oregon Spring, early tomato varieties or about gardening in general, please ask them in the Comments below.

Dale is a star and should be featured in every Millennial Gardener video!!!
Thanks for this review (a year later) 😊 I bought these seeds in the “20cents a pkt” rack at Walmart. Caught my eye due to the name (Oregon)… thinking our weather in Vermont can be similar to Oregon’s. Very weird & cool/rainy spring & summer here. This tomato plant is poking along without looking like it’s anywhere near harvest in the proclaimed 58-68 days. Again.. so grateful for your review. One of the very best parts of the review was Dale’s “opinion” 😂 👌
Bought a pack of Oregon Spring seeds from homedepot since they were a dollar, figured why not. Planted in the fall and they managed to survive winter in a dormant state. Theyre now growing insainly quick. Hoping they survive this summer.
I tried these years ago and they were very prolific even though I did not take the best care of them. I was most interested in canning and they were good for that. I’m trying them again this year.
These were beautiful looking tomatoes, but that's where it ended. They were pretty lousy tasting. Like you said, they were fine passing them through a food mill and turning them into tomato puree to cook them down into Sunday gravy, but they lacked flavor. I am not growing them again. Siletz was just as early and prolific and they CRUSHED Oregon Spring in flavor.
Watching this video makes me to excited for summer!
I'm already counting the days until March!
@@TheMillennialGardener right!?
Trying some as a later season tomato. Dale is a champ! Great bow tie!
I don't think I'll grow this again because I didn't find the flavor great. I started another Siletz seedling because it had similar yields and earliness to Oregon Spring, but much better taste. I'll be growing Siletz in September for a fall crop. Dale appreciates your kind words!
@@TheMillennialGardener Yes I have the Siletz going also. Our Remy is a Tomato Hound too!
I planted about 35 varieties of tomatoes this year, most of them new to me. One is the Oregon Spring because I live in western Washington State. I do not have anything ripe yet, it has been cool for weeks. But I noticed last week my first tomatoes are on my Oregon Spring plants. Today I saw some are about 2.5" across and I do not see any other varieties showing tomatoes yet, not even my cherry tomatoes! Thanks for sharing this video.
They're parthenocarpic, so they'll set without pollination. Because of that, they set when others fail. I will say Siletz is another parthenocarpic variety that has better flavor than Oregon Spring, so make sure you grow Siletz. It's just as prolific, early and handles cool temps but tastes better. I was really impressed with Siletz this year.
@@TheMillennialGardener Thank you, I will check it out!
I'm in zone 8A Deep South. When is the last day on the calendar. Where a tomato bloom can make a ripe tomato before frost?
Hi there, I am looking for an early producing and high yielding tomato varieties, both large and cherry sized with good flavor, what can you suggest? Am in New Zealand, so coming into spring now and we get hot summers :)
Dale is a handsome dude 🤗💗 TFS
He's definitely the best looking guy in the house 😀
Hi. Have you try some, my friend?
Of course! It's tasty! Thanks.🐕🐩💞😇
It is really under-ripe I grow this all the time in the PNW and it tastes great.
None of mine would ripen beyond this point. I let them sit and sit and sit on the plant. Sometimes, they would actually start to rot on the plant. No matter how long I left them, even to the point where they'd develop bad spots, they wouldn't ripen beyond this texture. Maybe this variety just doesn't like my climate.
Hello ,thank you for bringing this tomato to us, and is for my region, can you tell me where to get seeds ?
I purchased my seeds from Victory Seed, but this is a pretty widely available tomato. It's been around for a long time and is pretty common, so a lot of suppliers stock it.
@@TheMillennialGardener thank you
@@2brownbraids you're welcome.
It looks like you must have stink bugs in your area too. The red flesh has those white spots in the red flesh. That is exactly like stink bug or any sucking bug does to the red flesh of the tomatoes. You can also see damage to peppers too. If anyone has a good solution to stink bugs I would love to hear your ideas.
I am in Oregon. My roma tomatoes are starting to flower. I can see a least a couple developing tiny tomatoes. I will have tomatoes probably in mid or even early July here in zone 8b. LOL Haven't heard of Oregon Spring Tomatoes. Maybe I will try it.
Do these qualify as a Dwarf Determinate variety??
Dale ♥ so cute.
And he knows it. He is a master manipulator with those eyes of his. Thanks for watching!
why are there so many seeds if it's parthenocarpic
I think you're confusing hollow endocarps with seeds. Tomatoes will always have endocarps. Whether they're fertilized depends if they fill with anything.
@@TheMillennialGardener oh weird does that actually change the flavor/texture? or this is just about getting fruit before pollinators? When I've grown parthenocarpic cucumbers they were seedless. I ended up w/this as a free seed pack. thanks for your content I'd never heard of it.
I hope you realize that all your viewers have fallen in love with Dale.
Dale is everyone’s favorite and he knows it. He has become a professional beggar with a near 100% success rate 😂 I’m glad you’re enjoying the Dalester.
