Sir, I am a young Marine (19 years old) and I am infatuated with these videos. I have done expedition backpacking, buchcrafting, hiking, canoeing, etc. but never something like this. I admire this and as I sit around the barracks it gives me hope and something to aspire for. Thank you for all these videos. I hope one day I can create something close to anything you create.
I’m late commenting fella’s but yeah the only thing stopping me is the wife’s business, I’m 53 and been following Shawn since day 1, he’s sparked child& teen memories of the local mountains I grew up in learning to shoot rifles, hunting skills, and hiking as the day was long...I also surf being Hawaiian but truthfully the wild is where I’m more comfortable. But I will build a cabin with traditional building supplies or both rural/pre-milled eventually, if it’s your dream too “just do it”! ML&Aloha Kekoa🤙🏽🐺🌲
Octavia B It has been very satisfying and a journey. My cabin is in Maysville, NC and I have worked through many nights and now my wife and I live there. Haha. Good but challenging journey.
You are right checked and saw a dog or wolf like animal but Shawn was busy instructing but perhaps some else can I D it. Well done Mr. James -----------------looking for more. Such serenity to behold.
These old bow saws cut the best. I have used a 25 year old bow saw to build my shelter. The saw blade was never sharpened once and it still doesnt get dull. They must have had better steels back then.
I like these tool talks that you do as some of the stuff is not available here but it is good if I want to send a present to some of my friends in Canada. What you mentioned about leather gloves, I wore leather gloves when I worked as an electrician when I had to wear gloves, in some cases, you cannot wear gloves but when I did they were leather. When they wore out and I threw them out the labourers would scramble to get them as they always got the cheapest gloves and appreciated me giving them the opportunity to get them. On jobs where I was working with the same labourers I actually bought a load of them and gave them all a pair.
i can NOT believe that you're only having 49k subs right now. what you do/did in this wood cabin series is imo beyond greatness. hats off man, awesome work! and really enjoiyable to watch too :)
old school log cabin building....I'm looking forward to all the things I can learn from you on your project. I plan to put it to use myself. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
13:45 totally agree on the need for gloves, but most of the time I wear one on my left (gripping) hand and keep the right free to work I find it safer somehow....great vids by the way keep em coming.
This is great to watch. A friend and I built a cabin, off grid in Montana a few years back for a guy. Used all lodgepole pine harvested from the property. We cheated a little, chainsaws, but time was a factor. Hand scribed, swedish cope, chinkless. 12k lp generator and solar, cistern in the loft. It was a real fun job. I'm in the process of obtaining a piece of land to do this for myself now, so I'm a little envious, I'll admit. I'll just be following you for ideas, and motivation until then. I've done a few log builds for others, next one's for me. You probably don't need it, but if I could, I'd love to help. I'm a little far to physically help, but any input that could help, I'd love to be a part. Good luck, and I'll be watching.
I am really enjoying the series. I somehow missed this but it’s great to see your thought process. I would love to have a beer with You and Lonnie form Far North Bushcraft and Survival.
What an Education, a surprising depth of insight. The Links are important and excellent. I Sure appreciate the in depth details Shawn, it makes it an Intriguing and satisfying production. Thanks for taking generous time in a great job that brings our understanding right along. There's no one out there that is doing as fine a job for their Subscribers, Thanks Pal! ..... ps: Your writing the book is an excellent idea, Spot On actually. Blessings Pal, and Warm Regards, ......Oregon Mike H
Hi Shawn: The early settlers(1854) in south Haliburton, Kinmount area used mostly Tamarac for its durability & strength (locally called ironwood) If I had a choice I would incorporate as many as possible . but like the man says "It's your job not mine. Very interested Thanks Brian
Love this project series and another great video, thanks for posting Shawn. No real recommendations as of yet just cant wait to see more of the wood processing and foundation prep (assume that will all be more of a spring thing?...). All the best from Asia!
Hallo Shawn. I love seeing your videos. There is nothing better than good handwork. And being in the woods at the same time 😉 I have one question for you. How and what do you use to clean your sharpening stone ? Keep the great videos coming. Be safe and healthy ☺
If you peel the logs with sap running sometimes mildew will grow on the sweet sap. I sprayed the peeled logs with a mild bleach/water mix and it kept the logs clean. I also learned to move the logs close to the home site BEFORE peeling so you don't get the peeled logs dirty dragging them to the cabin. Dave L
David Lange if you send to early your comments there's 3 little dots to the right of the comment that you can click and edit it. 😀 I need your green log hint as I a building with with green logs.
I must say very good quality video and sound etc , nice narrative and informative information. I have come across your channel before but enjoyed this video so much subscription was a must have. My son and I are getting ready to commence a long term standing project so taking everything I can watch in as much as possible. Thank you for your efforts and sharring.
Great work, Shawn. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Always keeping an eye out for your new videos. Now who is the idiot that hit 'thumbs down' already?
My Self Reliance What, you can't build one overnight? Funny people. You should track the number of hours you put into it. I'm wondering how you're going to get all the logs moved around.
Hi Shawn! Most of those hand tools you showed us I'm already familiar with, so, I surprised myself! I love using hand tools, and I'm an artist and craftsperson, so they really appeal to me, plus, growing up in the country, my dear dad taught me a lot about using such tools. I can use power tools too, and quite competently, but the dang things are noisy, use a lot of energy, and some are outright dangerous. Hand tools suit my artistic, creative nature much better. Doesn't Lee Valley have some awesome stuff?
This is great, I've wanted to do this for a long time. I'm gonna be leaving the city in the next couple years and want to live out in the sticks full time. Im an ontario boy so watching this in my own province is massively informative. Your doing a great job man, keep it up. I was wondering though, how difficult would it bee to add side rooms the way you do the build??? I'm aiming to make one that will fit my sons and friends when they visit.
I love the video quality. Keep up the great videos. Was that a bird feeder hanging out in the middle of the woods? How close are you to another cabin or building?
Hey there just wondering if you have a list of tools you use, specifically in the earlier builds such as draw knives and such. Where I might be able to get them. There is to much static to sort through on the web. Cheers. Keep up the amazing work.
Shawn you really don't need to dry the logs first. Green logs lay up fine and by using some tricks the actually stay straighter and the cabin is MUCH easier to work on
got all of that items plus pipe clamps c clamps to work with am thinking of going into the outback to disappear from everyone after things are all said and done have bows and arrows also so know i can do good
I know you've read this before in the comment section & I just have to write this to you from me 😁. Kevin Costner could be your brother, seriously!!! ❤️🙌🏻 & it's not a bad thing it's is a compliment
So why did you change your mind about the cedar shingles? Sorry, just found your channel today and have been watching vids in reverse order. Love the content , impressed. But seriously, where do you find the time to do all these things? Are you retired, or did you win a lottery? I am always using my spare time to do my hobby craftsmanship things, and I am at a total loss as to how you've accomplished so much in so little time. Do you have a 9-5 regular job?

With you building a few structures what are all the tools( hand and power tools) that you would bring with you in a single trip to live and build if you didnt plan on leaving the site again
I am building a cabin also. I pushed everything away so if there's a wild fire the cabin will be safer and if a tree can fall and hit the cabin it has to go. What province you in to have so much cedars? I am in NW Ontario.

People interested in what woodsmen do are a small percentage of the population.
You certainly know how to use your hand tools! (never fail tools).

I love Tilley products, bought my first hat 20 years ago and I still have it.
That's cool, they are great hats!
So excited to watch this series. Been looking for a thorough set of videos like this so I can build a small hunters cabin on the farm.
This is great to watch.

Time flies Shawn! I've been following you over five years. At our age each year makes a big difference. Take care and merry Christmas!
👍 Watching you video here make me want to get into the outdoor more than I have...

I think you’re doing great man. I’ve learned a ton from you and I appreciate the free education.
Very very exciting! Looking forward to learning lots. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Shawn.
Good stuff and nice place to build the cabin!
I have subscribed a long time ago, but I really like all this new content you've been uploading. Great job Shawn!!

Great work, Shawn. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Always keeping an eye out for your new videos. Now who is the idiot that hit 'thumbs down' already?
rp e lol, thanks. To be fair, it's probably someone who thought they would see the entire cabin building process in this video. There will be more. :)
My Self Reliance What, you can't build one overnight? Funny people. You should track the number of hours you put into it. I'm wondering how you're going to get all the logs moved around.
Good to see a basic in tools - did you make a video about using a scribe to cut notches?
This is VERY cool!
Getting started!
Once you said the date it hit me , that was my 40th birthday. Good video.

It’s not that difficult to put an addition on
cool I'm looking forward to seeing the process. Looks like a massive amount of work perhaps you should invite some frends to help.
Going to enjoy this!
Really enjoy the videos Shawn , Looking forward to seeing the cabin come together
Thanks Steve
I love the video quality. Keep up the great videos. Was that a bird feeder hanging out in the middle of the woods? How close are you to another cabin or building?
I bought my father one of those axes, they are quite nice.
Looking forward to watching the process, good luck with this project :)

Great vid. Good clear descriptive explanation of tools. What hat is that. Is it a Tilly?
Thanks. Yes it is
excellent info!
Hello Self Reliance with all of those larch trees did you ever consider to use them for the cabin they are fantastic like locust ...Peter
I like that you are using swedish tools. There is a saying that swedish steel "bites"! 🤠hehe.
Watch my most popular video on the channel - I explain it there
Shawn: "Is this February?"
Will Geer: "No, pilgrim. March, I believe."
thumbs up man!!
How do you handle the camera work on later videos? Example: walking away through the woods with your sled and Cali.
Love it
С Новым Годом!! Много Радости Вам в Новом Году))мне так хочется такой топорик)подскажите сколько он стоит?))Ирэна и штучка на 21.09 минуте)) на 12,48 )
58 spruce trees in 3 days thats quite good
You have any videos on making a bow? If not can you make some? I'd love to learn how to make my own bow.
Jamez0117 I don't. Maybe I'll find some time later this summer or during the winter to make another bow
Any day you get to work to banjo music is a good day
Looks like Dick Proenneke's tool set up,,great vids, keep em coming
Lee Valley here I come.
Could you show is some spasifics on how to notch logs safely
Damnit, now I bought that gransfors axe haha
Impressive you're doing this all by hand man! Some good small game around there? Have you seen any hare around or just tracks?
The Wooded Beardsman So much game!
i like the homemade mallet...you should make thor's hammer
With you building a few structures what are all the tools( hand and power tools) that you would bring with you in a single trip to live and build if you didnt plan on leaving the site again
23:36 is that a road or driveway trees look very organised....
Where's the shovel? With the cabin I'm building without power tools a shovel has been all I've been using recently
When is the best time of the year to decide where a cabin should be built?
Is this built on land that you bought? Do you choose the land you buy for it’s amenability to building a log cabin?
does anyone know the manufacturer and model of the saw in the initial image? thanks!
Bahco makes good blades for bowsaws if you are looking for a replacement
Joe Sweeney Thanks. I found some the day after shooting the video:)
I am building a cabin also. I pushed everything away so if there's a wild fire the cabin will be safer and if a tree can fall and hit the cabin it has to go. What province you in to have so much cedars? I am in NW Ontario.
That's a great idea up north. We don't get many wildfires. For this cabin, I'm in South central Ontario.
My Self Reliance wow! I didn't realize we had that much cedar in ontario! Cool!
Ah, you answered the questions.
Great video Shawn...I feel like a cheater now because I used a chainsaw for my log cabin haha...
13prevail Lol, the temptation is great
What would you say the size of the orange paracord pouch is? I've been looking for something that small and light for mine.
Not sure how to describe the size. My Toaks 1.5 litre titanium pot came in it
did you bought the land you did build on? or did you just build on it
The land I filmed this particular video on is my friend's land. The main cabin videos are on land that my wife and I bought.
@@MySelfReliance do you have any videos on how to find and purchase suitable land to build on?
Interesting
I would really love to know what hat you are wearing. I am on the hunt for a hat for myself and I like yours. Thanks
Hi John, It is a Tilley hat called 'Outback'
www.tilley.com/canada_en/twc7-outback.html
My Self Reliance wow. Thanks so much for reply
Green roof, if possible, please!
Do you have any store you recommend for tool purchases?
You REALLY ought to get an Amazon Associates account. Then you can link products below your videos and get a small percentage of sales for gas money
Garrett Dumont Thanks. Got one - I use it on the website.
Awesome/ ATB
Why not just drop the trees you are worried about
