This Is Wrong but We Have No Choice | Stone Cabin Renovation

- This week on our stone cabin renovation, we're dealing with the fallout of making some design & material changes on the fly when we were building the new roof by adding in some hefty timber purlins to take the extra load. Like most things on this DIY stone house build, it's going to be tricky as purlins should really be installed BEFORE the roof rafters! WHOOPS! 😁
As well as strengthening our DIY roof, we're also winding down a little in the build up to Christmas with some festive crafting! 🎄🎅🏼
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Central Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊

We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Hope you all enjoy this one! Forgot to say, if anyone has any rendering tips or can recommend some solid resources please drop a comment as we're going to need all the help we can get!😂
Well, I wish you guys all the best and a very Merry Christmas. Just be careful how you store your precious and beautiful olive oil. It must be protected from air, light, heat and humidity. It must be properly closed and at room temperature, up to 20°C. It is advisable to avoid sudden temperature changes. If the oil has thickened or solidified due to excessive cold, just place it at room temperature to return it to its normal state. Cheers!
Kirsty from Portugal from Scratch is in your area. Very knowledgeable on natural building. Guy and Kylie at Make Do Grow also are excellent. Everything looks great! You’re doing a wonderful job. Cheers from Oz! 😊
Yes both of you are working very well together, wishing you the best. I look forward to the completion of your beautiful home

If you're going to keep the olive oil in those plastic bottles (which you should not!) at least put them in a very dark place. Ideally, you'd wanna use tinted glass bottles. If not then clear glass bottles, always kept in the dark. If it's a 1L bottle that you consume fairly quickly it's fine, but for those big 5L bottles that you're gonna keep in storage for a long time just remember, no plastic and definitely no sunlight! 😉
Our local olive oil mill sells the oil in plastic bottles that we then keep in a dark cupboard! Their mill obviously does the same.....not sure I agree with you!
@@jenh9252 Of course they do... because plastic is cheaper!
Read this: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4375245/
And this study doesn't even address the fact that plastic bottles can start breaking down into microplastics which the olive oil will absorb!
We keep our oil in old flip-up 750ml beerbootles in our cave, where it never gets below 12 degrees. It works well enough!
Sounds like your recommendations are really spot on, but maybe not possible for everyone. Isn’t that the way life works? There always seems to be the ideal and on the flip side is the possible.
Obviously, when watching the clip, they had other things on their minds than making sure the olive oil was not feeling neglected
My favourite off grid guys.. no nonsense .. being real.. but you have such skills and foresight to get there.. love your channel ❤
It's nice to see the positive attitude of a couple restoring their barn! The house is small, but it also requires love and care, the right approach to restoration. People who work on their land always command respect. Good luck to you guys!
With love from Russia!
I was raised in Southern California where the weather is compared to Portugal. I grew up with Eucalyptus and tile roofing. The trees look so much like where I grew up. You live in a lovely place.
Congratulations in blending in what we hear to what we see, quite often in these Vlogs there is jarring effect in trying to marry the two of sound and sight, but you guys have absolutly nailed it......................................... Great work Guys!!
The Christmas wreath is quite beautiful, Victoria! The things you two accomplish working together is awesome.❤
Way to go!! Great problem-solving . The wreath is just beautiful Victoria ❤
Thank you Cathy ❤
You are both such very hard workers! Please be careful lifting the heavy beams … it would be sad if one of you got injured 😢. Your content & your great attitude’s make your videos so very interesting & inspirational!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
A sense of humor is no small thing!
I THINK (if i remember what our guide in the Lousa mountains taught us right) that the little balls that come off the oak are its natural defences against bug larvae - it encases them in the little ball so they cant harm the tree itself! Its why they usually have a tiny hole somewhere.
Absolutely gorgeous wreath, wish i was as creative as you. Love watching you both, and seeing the house progress!
Have a wonderful christmas both
The little balls as you call them are called oak apples in U.K. and are the homes of a little insect called a gall wasp. Always make sure there is an exit hole before you pick them or the wasps may exit later when you least expect them!
Merry Christmas Victoria and Ricky.
Was so refreshing to see you guys again today.... You prove on and on again that we can live life of simple things in life. Thank you, thank you, thank you
I enjoyed this video. Your wreath is stunning. I live near a village that was one of the last Medici family holdings. It is called Santo Stefano di Sessanio. It was in complete ruins, Originally built in the 11th century. An architect in Milano bought the village and started putting it back together and it is amazing. Although they do have electricity and heating, the christmas decoration is similar to yours, they use natural fibers, no glaring lights, amazing aromas, and candles. I could almost smell the wreath. a bit of advice. You will need to transfer your oil to metal cans. Plastic won't preserve it properly. My friends put it in a vat in their cellar with a tap on it. Then when you need Oil or you wish to sell some liters, you can transfer into metal tins and then transfer into a glass bottle with a stopper. You can buy a vat at a farm store or a local hardware store probably there like here. We get anything and everything from the plummer's
store. lol. The roof is stunning. Best of Luck and Buona Natale! from Italy
PS. We sell olive oil here for 10 euros a liter. if you choose to do that.
You two are so adorable and I love the way you work together so well. I love your wreath, so beautiful and creative! The only thing you two are missing are two sweet little kids running around! ❤

Great job you guys, necessity is the mother of invention ❤.
Love your dogs. You are kind decent hard working people. May God Bless you all. RSA
Ingenuity...determination...you are both doing so amazingly well. Victoria, the wreath looked fabulous and you would have had to pay about £40-£50 for that in a garden centre...and it wouldnt have looked as nice!!
That used to be our Christmas tree every year when I was a kid here in NWQ in Australia. Couple of weeks before Xmas, Dad would take all the kids out bush and cut down a small gum (eucalyptus) tree ( about 7' high), bring it home and put it in a bucket of sand/rocks in the corner of the lounge. Mum with wrap Xmas paper around the bucket and we would decorate with all their vintage baubles and tinsel. The finishing touch was a little bit of 'Santa Snow Spray' and the scent would fill the house. Loved it even though the temp was 40°C and above around Christmas.😁😁👌👌💕💕Love your progress and have a happy Christmas & New Year
I am amazed by your teamwork, accomplishments and love.
Iam Portuguese from Fatima, Portugal. I have resided in the US since she 11 and Ian 53.
I miss lots about Portugal and visit but my career and life is in America. I love watching you guys. I am a new subscriber.
I almost cried when you ripped the grapevine off the ground😢 to put up fence.
I can't wait for a real flower garden and wild rose bushes all over!
I climbed many olive trees as a child. My grandparents had wineries, many plantations of olive trees, grapes, eucalyptus trees, line, corn, onions, and it was great!
A beautiful wreath!
Hi from south Australia. You are correct about the eucalypt. Our florist shops have a special smell about them because of those leaves. Have a very happy Christmas and all the best for next year
How do you do all what you do and your finger nails are still lovely 😊
I get a manicure every week…Victoria’s nails don’t look too bad either 😁
🤣

The wreath was beautiful and I really enjoyed the music you played while hanging it. Your barn renovation will be worth it. Wishing you both a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Dont rush the stone work for us. It takes the time it takes. Do the inside in stone as you said. In the summer you might find the will to do the outside. It will look so much better.
The wreath is lovely.
You two are so cute! Like most of us, the easiest solution is what we're all looking for!

On Escape to Rural France Dan is doing a lot of the work alone and so he got a machine I don’t know if he bought it or rents it but it allows him to lift the wood to the roof and put it in place. It is pretty amazing.
