Thoughts, on the bottom your bag. The weakness or tear issues. Make a sticker with a recipe or advertisement for firewood delivery. Just put in the areas most weak. Or give to the retailer to put on any tears in bags. My take is you are more about customer service and special high quality products than bulk. And that is good. You can never compete on bulk. Sorta like a local town paper. It works for that town. Solid business. People love it. Loyal. Too many times, everyone wants to scale things big to get rich. I think you are doing great and thinking about your customers. Also not sure if you can do it. But you can make pellets too. See if any of your suppliers of chippers know how they make cooking/smoking pellets.
I loved how you held up 3 fingers when saying you dry your chips for 2 days 😂. I do a lot of public speaking and I do that all the time! Good video Joe and appreciate how you are unafraid to try new things!
I really enjoyed your comment Tim. I never noticed things about me like this before bc I just am who I am but one thing I am not is a tribalist or one who follows the crowd. I think that is what makes easy for me to try new things, think outside the box etc. There is all sorts of pressure society and tribes put on people to conform to the way you look, dress, act, do business etc. I have never been one to identify with a group...I just am who I am...and I can see it in the way OWB operates. I recall working for a Fortune 300 company and the regional VP just seemed to HATE me and I had always felt it was bc I didn't permit myself to conform to their culture, I always kept my individuality in what I did. The fact I was VERY productive for them didn't seem to matter as much as the way I SHOULD have wore their uniform etc. Funny how people prioritize things other than success!
Lol, he pulls a Dr Pepper out of the chipper and shoots out $10 bills, you crack me up. Wish I had just a small setup like you got going on, I have a massive cherry tree to process and I have the chance to get a huge hickory tree for free but everything has to go down 4 steps, through the garage to load on my trailer. Love watching your videos!
I think the best part of this is seeing how much you love what you do. Maximizing profits may be good, but the most important part of life is enjoying what you do. Keep on smiling brother! 😃
Joe, good luck in the new venture. Lots of people getting into barbecue and smoking so demand should be good. I would recommend that you either fill the bag or get smaller bags. The hickory bag looks like a “short fill”. It’s just a consumer perception thing. And, let’s face it, the few extra chips aren’t going to reduce your margin by that much.
Great video on the chip process and increasing sales on firewood. I looked in my Titan chipper and didn't find a Dr. Pepper!! Guess I bought the wrong model!!🤣🤣🤣 Have a Safe Day
Great video Joe I loved the Dr. Pepper in the chipper. You have a wonderful way of putting a smile on everyone's face. That is why you are one of my favorite channels.
I think heavier bags is a good idea. If there's potential for trapped moisture once bagged. I think using a hole punch to put a couple holes in the bag before filling would vent it.
My chipper is old and may need to blades or my splits are too big. They bounce around and do not really get sucked in. I will try smaller splits. Great info. Thank you.
Nice video!! I've got people asking for hickory chips. I have a tree service and sell firewood so I have the wood and the equipment. I keep telling people no because I figured being a food product I'd have to have an inspected product? That's pry the only reason I've avoided cooking wood sales.
You gave me a great idea 💡 i have just chipped up about 150 lbs of red alder. Hope to make a few bucks selling it locally for smoking meat especially salmon.
Hey Joe, nice idea and I did some research for where I live (Europe). For 1 kg (approx. 2 pounds for you guys) of chips typically the price is around 8,5 - 9€. Seen the parity is a recent fact it's the same amount in $. The same price is charged in general for all species (oak, hickory, mapple, cherry, apple), a bit to my surprise. There is a surcharge of 100% for chips made from old Jack Daniels Tennessee whisky barrels. Seen the high Captain Morgan consumption in your area that may be a barrel route too as well ;-) Taking into account a 30% margin which is common over here in retail means they purchase it for around 6,75 € and markup 30%. Again, this is from a European perspective so at your end situation could of course varie. Wish you a lot of success with this OWB new business opportunity Joe!
This was a really great video Joe. I was very entertained and informed. I like the idea of not wanting hickory as a firewood when it is much more valuable as smoking wood. To each wood species it’s purpose.
Loved the video Joe. Elaine from Canada here, you keep me smiling and informed on great business practices. I wish you much success in all your ventures, thanks for taking us along with you. I like how some thoughtful ideas come through the comment section and hope some of them are useful to your growing operation.
A recycled burlap bag would be great packaging vs plastic. The bag can also soak the chips and when done its easily Burns or can be recycled as a air pot for plants.
I appreciate that you suggest trying to sell product at locally owned, AKA Mom & Pop stores but they are dwindling rapidly by the influx of Big Box Stores. I try to do business at locally owned stores but it is getting harder to find them. I believe that the loss of many Mom & Pops is the high cost of low prices! Just my thoughts.
Enjoy watching you, Maybe look at building a small solar kiln i looked into building one myself for lumber and live edge slabs i am sawing. I am not to far from you north central Ohio. MAKE IT A GREAT DAY.
Joe, I think your a genius even if you don't know how to count with your fingers. 😃 😀 I know you put up the wrong amount of fingers to make great content. That's another reason I think your a genius. Your right about packaging. A lot of money is being made just in packaging alone. The real key is what you already know. Quality product, good packaging, and most important GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. 👍
Great video Joe. Going to look into a Titian wood chipper got a lot of fence row to clean and be better then burning. When I get one hope it comes with Dr Pepper that would be cool. Have a great 👍 day
This is a fantastic idea Joe and one I am going to try myself as I already have the chipper!! I’m going to look into packaging with bags like you recommend and try out selling at my roadside firewood stand! Thanks for the idea, have a great day!
Cut wood into split for drying, them chips them into big onion bags off your chipper. Planter might make potatoes chips . Another way off drying, lay on a net them there will air dry faster in the sun . Plus the netting will let out the dust and fine dirty. Joe someday probably see your wood chips up here in Canada smoking Atlantic salmon and sea trout.
I have not but occasionally look into kilns. I'm still not sure about the economics of one but hope to one day if and when I can find a more industrial site for OWB
What about a putting a couple/few of those absorb packets in each bag? They put them in freeze dried foods, etc. I'm not sure how effective they would be but they are cheap. They might be all it takes to prevent having wet bags?
One other thing you might want to do is go to an office supply store or check online for round sticky labels to put on the top of you bags. It will keep people from opening the bags and possibly stealing some or contaminating the product.
Hey Joe, you've probably heard this already. Take a home punch and perforate the bag a couple times. That will reduce the moisture that collects on the inside of the bag effectively.
Hey Joe, I love this idea. As you mentioned there's some room for improvement of the process. One thing I noticed was that it seems there's a decent amount of chips not being collected by the tub. I guess you should place it higher, closer to the shoot out, so there's less chips falling down to the ground. Greetings from Germany
Hi Joe. Thanks for the laughs and the info! Do you have to weigh each bag while you fill it to make sure it’s the same amount of chips in the bags or is it sold by volume? A thought for the dust problem in the bags, a sieve made from hardware cloth or a coarse screen. I burn corn in a biomass stove due to access from my dad’s farm. One year the some of the corn was ground and had a lot of fines in it. I built a chute out of my little corn bin I filled my buckets with. A portion of the bottom i left a large hole that I put the cloth in. When the material went across the screen, the fines fell out. This might be an option to screen the chips after they’re dried. Have a great day 👍🏻!
Joe, Is there any value to coating your chips with some kind of substance ( wax - smell enhancing additive - etc ) to make them burn better, longer after drying? Just a thought. When I see barbecue cooking, they soak the chips in water to make them smolder etc. to last longer. You could even dye your chips some enticing color. Just some ideas to build and enhance on your product.
maybe instead of plastic bags, a quality burlap or unrefined cotton bag, and charge a couple dollars more? people can then re-use the bags for other things around the house and farm.
I think it’s brilliant. Lots of hickory already down and drying on my property. Titan seems like a good machine. Now if it would only dispense a cold Shiner Bock.
Joe best video I’ve seen lately very interesting. I may have to pursue this especially since I have a brand new wood chipper on the back of my tractor as we speak. Thanks for sharing take care, Ben.
I cracked up when the bills starting flying! That’s awesome. Thank you again for sharing. As said, you are a mentor and motivator... I’m about to get up and go split some firewood!
I've been on Titan's site a hundred times and never seen the Dr Pepper dispenser. Loving the chips idea, will you pursue getting kiln dried so you could do internet sales?
Joe is really good with creative solutions to problems. To scale this idea up, for mass production, is trickier? Wood kilns are very interesting, and very expensive, unless you make your own out of an insulated cargo container like the "Oak Farm Firewood" channel does, for ~ $20k+. I am not sure if there is a big market for dried hickory chips for BBQ-ing right now? But, I like your idea. The kiln would also allow one to dry a 4+ full cord batch of green split firewood in 4 days, and sell it immediately for cash without waiting for up to 1.5 years! I have seen only 1 "commercial level" guy doing this on RUclips in Pennsylvania. His kilns were probably $150k+ for each kiln. If the kiln could be used for multiple uses, your idea could be implemented easier.
I have a contact that has a kiln and is interested in trying this out. Not sure how I could package chips to put in a kiln just yet. Maybe a lot of chicken wire etc
Hey Joe! Great video as always but, I noticed how some chips are not making into the bin. After thinking about it, this adds up in the long run. I was imagining some sort of bagger for the chipper to catch all the chips. Keep up the great work Joe!
It's not really a problem Mike I shoot them into the trailer but some times I want to be in the shade or have to change some things so the video looks good.
id really like to see a hidden camera selling thing I'm good at the firewood process but know i probley suck at selling, besides bulk that's easy. to go into a store and get an order, i don't know if i have that
Great video Joe! Might be worth you looking into the homemade wine and spirit market where they use oak and other chips for flavouring. That's dependent on the laws in your state right enough. The chips would have to be good bit smaller though. All the best. Regards, Mark
Put a piece of flexible plastic drainage pipe on the end of the chipper output with the end of the pipe closer into the rubber maid tote. You will catch all the chips. You will not need to clean up the ground around the tote. And you will not waste product=$$$$.
Hey Joe what about putting the tote inside a car with the windows shut in a hot summer day. I bet the whole tote “wood” dry out in and afternoon and no cleaning them up from the trailer bed.
What about onion sacks like what back 40 uses for his wood stand but smaller. They would air more and smell good when you went by them. I would definitely by them from you because you know your getting a good product from OWB.
Joe you should use cooking oil or vegetables oil for your BBQ chips or pizza oven . Remember peoples use it for cooking. You don’t need chainsaw bar oil smell on there foods .
Nice Hickory wood chips it makes money it has an important Role in the fire wood industry, Are you going to be doing Oak Cherry Hickory wood chunks in you videos,
I have personally replaced alot vinyl siding on homes that was melted from landscape mulch "spontaneous combustion"...Even if you dry your product correctly and then the retailer or their employees mishandled the storage of chips. If the store was to burn...The lawyers will have a field day pointing blame.🙄 Not wishing any bad will on your great idea...just bringing concern of my experiences with these types of products. 👍
Great video Joe. Why don't u look at dust/shavings in bags aswell or into totes or trailor sizes pet bedding etc might be money maker. 🤔👍🏴 Suggestions for getting the dust out drill few 20mm holes in bottom your bucket your chipping into then got homemade sive.
ok Joe hear me out on this. We are looking at a pellet mill to make our own feed for our channels animals. Imagine you cutting a bunch of cherry or hickory on your 405 and taking the saw shavings and turning them into smoking pellets for pellet smokers. Just saying a good idea maybe for a waste product.

What about onion sacks like what back 40 uses for his wood stand but smaller. They would air more and smell good when you went by them.
I would definitely by them from you because you know your getting a good product from OWB.
Thanks Steve. I want to keep with the clear zip bags bc they look awesome with the label. Thanks buddy
Nice packaging. I agree on heavier bags. No retailers want chips all over from people looking at the bags. Peace
Thanks Bill
Could spread out on screens and get air flow to both sides and not have to tie up trailer.
Thanks Bert!
Ooh….First! Thanks for your vids, Joe. 👍
You are always first on my list RG!!
Joe you should use cooking oil or vegetables oil for your BBQ chips or pizza oven . Remember peoples use it for cooking. You don’t need chainsaw bar oil smell on there foods .
I had considered that but never had pulled the trigger. I was always afraid of attracting bees if I used my processor with Canola
Nice Hickory wood chips it makes money it has an important Role in the fire wood industry, Are you going to be doing Oak Cherry Hickory wood chunks in you videos,
Not sure about chunks yet Ebele but they are on my radar screen
Gateway computer, with the Intel Pentium processor! Served me well in college.
Good times.
I had a Commodore 64!!!
I am hoping that you will be giving away one of these Titan chippers during the next OWB livestream giveaway.
Nice job on the labels.
That would be nice for sure!! LOL. Thanks John
Where you gwt the bags for the chips you inspired me to try this myself thanks
Give it a shot CJ!!
I will add that to my list of worries. Thanks Wayne
Get a polytunnel cheap tables and some small trays that hold a bag full of chips. See where I' going?
Thanks Brian!
Keep it up man great job
Thanks, will do!
Good ideas Mike!
ok Joe hear me out on this. We are looking at a pellet mill to make our own feed for our channels animals. Imagine you cutting a bunch of cherry or hickory on your 405 and taking the saw shavings and turning them into smoking pellets for pellet smokers. Just saying a good idea maybe for a waste product.
I saw them and think they are cool. Not sure but may try it one day
