He speaks non fluent English. I speak non fluent Spanish and I can promise you that if I had to do interviews in public in a professional environment I would use an interpreter. I would to make sure that I understand and am being understood correctly. Cultures differ, words can be misconstrued, grammar is different and I'd worry about it. So it makes sense for him to use an interpreter since he isn't fluent in speaking English l. In addition he once was asked about it and he said (paraphrasing) that his job is to play baseball and nothing else and thats what he is doing.
Well it's probably like having a butler to serve you a cup of coffee. You can pretty well do it by yourself but why not skip one or two steps of mental work if you can afford? Int reminded me of one Russell Peters hilarious take on how a my-english-not-so-good mind work in slo-mo (back and forth back and forth between your mother tongue and English.)
