My understanding of the Bible is that most of it was taken from older stories and myths and traditions from other older religions. Very little is unique or original.

The big question is why didn’t early Christians especially those at the council of Nicaea see these parallels?
My guess is that they saw them, but decided their story is the true one and all previous ones where mere coincidences of human thought. They also focus on the differences and ignore the similarities.
Plutarch would have written this around the same time, or slightly after the Gospels. He was born in 46 AD. The stories might have been circulating, but it isn't like it was in print before the early Gospels were making their way around. In fact, Life of Alexander was likely written after the synoptic Gospels like a couple of decades. The real takeaway is more that these types of myths were common in the Empire, not that one was directly copying another.

I too believed that Mary had been impregnated by God. It’s amazing how naïve we were as children.

Now I realise how immoral it is. God essentially commits adultery with a man's betrothed wife. Not only does this damage her reputation and honour, it puts her life in danger. Joseph would have been obligated to divorce and try her for adultery . Death by stoning. Jesus was conceived out of wedlock and was considered an illegitimate bastard. They told him they were not born of fornication like him.

In one of the gnostic gospels ( Philip, I think) it says that Mary being a virgin is misunderstood. It means that she was undefiled by the powers of darkness, so was pure of heart. Not about sex at all.

Gnostics are empty of coherent moral system to make any such judgements. It's all make believe speculations, in opposifion of solid Church teaching.
When you raise this topic with Christias, they immediately say one of two things. Either it was a foreshadowing of Jesus, or it is fake and were written after the fact to make the Jesus virgin-birth LOOK fake.
Or, as in I think Justin Martyr said, the demons did it ahead of time. Whenever I hear this, I always ask how demons were able to intercept the plans of God to imitate them to throw humans off course with a fake. Somehow, they infiltrated God's mind, stole his plans, and planted a false trail...

@@davida.taylor8444 That is actually a pretty horrible argument on his side because it opens a can of worms; what if Jesus' story is demons' doing? If demons are just strong enough to do what God can do, how are we going to differentiate between the two?
Even worse, if demons can do all the good and amazing miracles like healing sicks, bringing fertility and prosperity, defending cities, etc. what makes them any worse or less worthy of worship than God?
Jesus virgin birth was prophesized in Isaiah 7:14 hundreds of years before Alexander's time, who was born to royal parents and circumstances, while Jesus was born to peasant mother and step-father in a humble livestock manger. Why would the alleged Jewish inventors of Jesus birth 'myth' draw on Greek traditions when they had their own scriptures on hand? Jesus birth was a fulfillment of that older Biblical prophecy predating and nothing to do with Alexander's birth story. Virgin birth now has to be an easy to believe miracle since the more recent discovery of in-vitro fertilization - how can this be difficult for God? But certainly was a miracle sign relative to that time period. The fact that so much energy is put into making Jesus sound like a myth, and not Zeus for example, is yet another sign that he is the real deal. Time to stop manufacturing blind myths and return to Jesus Christ.
Few points: - Argument that Jesus virgin birth was prophesied in Isaiah is good argument and I would like them to answer that particular point. BUT; Gospels were most likely written by Greek authors that came from Greek tradition. And gospels were written at least 30 years after Jesus death. Could it be that authors mixed stories told by apostles decades later with greek mythology they were familiar with to compose powerful myth for new religion? And doing that it would help spread of religion in Greek world where in-fact first Church had risen?
- How do we know Jesus it the Messiah? Especially when we know Gospel and most of rest was written by Greeks? That is argument Jews even today say against Christianity?
- For God to have to rely on in-vitro fertilisation is just weird and almost hilarious. Why even use any method, why not just create from nothing inside of women Jesus baby? You cant introduce science as your argument when you need it. Science also says virgin birth as described in Bible is not possible. Even if we go along the story, how does non-material Holy Spirit fertilise material woman egg? It creates sperm from nothing and then goes with in-vitro method 😅?
- There is no need to prove Zeus story is myth as almost 100% population of planet Earth agrees that Zeus is mythical being from Greek gods stories and fables. Even you and I agree on that. Nobody believes in it at all and there is no problem with it. But people believe in Bible and therefore there is quest for proving or disproving if Jesus or anything from Bible really exists.

Literary cultural imitation (mimesis) was the standard trend of the day. Augustus also imitated Alexander’s birth myth (in Suetonius)… and Alexander’s birth legend mimetically followed that of Heracles, the archetypal demigod. Those “prophets” showed no clear conception of Jesus. The passages often quoted out of Isaiah (and each taken wildly out of context) guided the Gospel writers to craft their hero in alignment with the decontextualized readings we find (nothing in Hebrew suggested a virgin would conceive a demigod). Oracles had also supposedly foretold the coming of Alexander. In both cases, magi foresaw their birth and significance according to the legends. Hellenism was the deliberate imitation of the Hellenistic / Hellenic forms and nothing could be more Hellenistic than the imitation of Alexander.. entire books are written on the trend to imitate the man.

@MrCyberseeker61 - Not a mistranslation. In the Hebrew scripture it is a "maiden" or "young girl" who will give birth according to Isaiah 7. In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures from which the apostolic writers would quote, the Isaiah 7 text is translated using a word which means virgin. The Gospel of Matthew then dramatizes that translation - and very possibly because, as Richard and Derek are saying here, a virgin birth is a trope intended to divinize the hero. Peace, Paul
It’s from a chapter of Isaiah. There was a mistranslation of a young woman in Hebrew to virgin in Greek in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament). The change doesn’t make sense in the context of that chapter. The setting is present tense not future.

Dr. Miller is one of the best. But what are the chances you can get John-Christian Eurell ("Paul and the Jesus Tradition") or Tom Dykstra ("Mark, Canonizer of Paul") on to talk about Mark getting much of his Jesus dialog by re-wording Paul's opinions, and Hebrews? Or maybe David Oliver Smith, "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Paul". Or even Richard Carrier, who can speak authoritatively about all their work, and would probably be ecstatic to talk about something other than mythicism.

Not unique in any way other than the amount of Mott-and-Bailey fallacies used to ignore all the obvious signs a of forgery rather than what they used to do to play lip service to pagans by saying the stories were more of prophecies of future Joshua than stories of past hero’s/gods. I mean technically even Isaac and John the Baptizer are considered miraculous pregnancies… there are no divine “births” in Abraham-fertility-pact-ism except the later near dark age stories about Mary’s hymen not breaking OR being reformed after she gave birth to Joshua/Jesus. But the mystery of Mithras who was not even born of a women but just created directly by Ahura-Mazda from a rock/wall/solid dimension is rather a miracle birth instead of miracle conception.

Jesus was not a real person. No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. There is not a single contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus came well after his alleged life from either unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings, and none of them could serve as reliable evidence for a historical Jesus simply because all sources about Jesus derive from hearsay accounts.
Outside of the bible, there is nothing to prove Jesus ever existed. Of all the prominent historians that lived during Jesus’ alleged life, not a single one mentions him. Not a single historian, philosopher, scribe or follower who lived before or during the alleged time of Jesus ever mentions him. Philo Judaeus who was born in 20 B.C.E. and died 50 C.E, lived as the greatest Jewish-Hellenistic philosopher and historian of the time and lived in the area of Jerusalem during the alleged life of Jesus. He wrote detailed accounts of the Jewish events that occurred in the surrounding area and yet not once, in all of his volumes of writings do we read a single account of Jesus. Nor do we find any mention of Jesus in Seneca’s (4? B.C.E. - 65 C.E.) writings, nor from the historian Pliny the Elder (23? - 79 C.E.)..If, indeed, such a well known Jesus existed, as the gospels allege, don't you think it's reasonable that, at the very least, the fame of Jesus would not have reached the ears of ONE of these men? Amazingly, we have not one Jewish, Greek, or Roman writer mentioning ANYTHING found in the New Testament.

Most evangelists teach that these are eyewitness accounts but common sense, reason, and logic prove otherwise. Even more ridiculous was the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness by Satan. According to the story, when Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted he was by himself. That being the case, who was there to document the story? Again, Matthew was an infant and Luke never heard of Jesus until after his death.
Finally, No one knows who wrote the books of the NT. All we have are copies of copies of copies, and the earliest of these are vague fragments from a few of the gospels from the second and third century. None of these fragments contain a clue as to who wrote them, and there isn't enough in the fragments on which to base an entire doctrine. Marcion was responsible for the first cannon. He was an anti-Semite and threw out Matthew and John because they were written by Jews.
The above evidence would be sufficient to prove that neither Matthew nor Luke could possibly have been eyewitnesses to any of these accounts. The stories were simply hearsay embellished by some unknown storytellers nearly one hundred years after Jesus alleged death.

If the Gospel of Mark had been written by John Mark, carefully recording the memoirs of the Apostle Peter, how is it possible that Aramaic-speaking Peter could come up with a story about fellow Aramaic-speaking Jews confusing 'Eloi' with 'Elijah' ('Elias' in Greek) while standing at the cross and report that those present thought Jesus was calling out for Elijah?

If Jesus was crucified for only 6 hours (Mark 15:25, Luke 23:44) instead of the usual several days is it more likely that he really died, remained dead for three days and then rose from the dead or that he just went into a coma and then came to? If, two thousand years ago, anyone came out of a coma, would anyone at the time say that he had not been risen from the dead?
Why didn't the authors of Mark, Matthew, or Luke mention the fact that the Jews asked Pilate to break the legs of Jesus and the two thieves; that the soldiers did break the legs of the two thieves, but when they came to Jesus, he was already dead? Something I never thought about before taking a DNA ancestry test and spending two years studying the subject: For a human being to have male characteristics, such as a penis, they necessarily need to have a Y chromosome, which they can only have if a male human being was involved in their conception.
Frazer in the first edition of The Golden Bough suggested that the death and resurrection of Jesus was added to the story in effectively as a marketing tool in order to make him more popular among peoples of the ancient Near East where dying and resurrected fertility gods were common myths, Osiris being one example. This was eliminated in later editions for obvious reasons -- viz. so that the book would be more acceptable to Christians.
Speaking of parallels with Alexander the Great, this reminds me of a few other parallels with Greek figures. Alexander's father Philip 2nd of Macedon's assassination by his own bodyguard Pausanias is similar to Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus. The Judas betrayal is also similar to how Ephialtes betrayed King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans against the Persians (the theme of betrayal present in both stories and the 300 Spartans being similar to how Jesus was dead for 3 days after being betrayed and crucified). A third example I want to give is how the Athenian democrat Ephialtes was assassinated in 461 bce and succeeded by the well-known Pericles of Athens, perhaps this story being similar to how Philip 2nd of Macedon was assassinated and succeeded by his more famous son Alexander. Then there are the Roman brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, the former being assassinated by a mob that was hired by the Roman senate, and the latter committed suicide. Their so-called "crime" was trying to redistribute Roman public land to poor farmers. This resulted in a split between the Roman Optimates and the Populares. Julius Caesar was a member of the "liberal" Populares faction. Also, in Persian history, Leonidas of Sparta's enemy Xerxes of Persia was killed in 465 bce by his advisor Artabanus. Also, Cyrus of Persia was killed in 530 bce by the female leader Tomyris of the Massagetae people. I just thought I'd list these examples to add to the Jesus discussion regarding the parallels with Alexander the Great and the assassination of Julius Caesar. Fascinating Greco-Roman and Persian history that the gospel authors may have drew inspiration from.

The same idea came up of the gospel writers not just competing to get a hearing in the Hellenistic world, but also competing between themselves for followers in their own "schools." To me, the competition to incorporate better mimetic and syncretic tropes makes a huge lot of sense why the birth narratives are entirely different, with Matthew weaving in not just Alexander, but also Moses into his as a one better than Luke's myth!
It is bad reasoning to say that because a previous story has a similar theme therefore the latter story is based on the former. But regardless the prophet Isaiah prophesied the Virgin birth around 700 BC a good 350 years before Alexander was even born.
Literary cultural imitation (mimesis) was the standard trend of the day. Augustus also imitated Alexander’s birth myth (in Suetonius)… and Alexander’s birth legend mimetically followed that of Heracles, the archetypal demigod. Those “prophets” showed no clear conception of Jesus. The passages often quoted out of Isaiah (and each taken wildly out of context) guided the Gospel writers to craft their hero in alignment with the decontextualized readings we find. Oracles had also supposedly foretold the coming of Alexander. In both cases, magi foresaw their birth and significance according to the legends. Hellenism was the deliberate imitation of the Hellenistic / Hellenic forms and nothing could be more Hellenistic than the imitation of Alexander.. entire books are written on the trend to imitate the man

Isaiah was also historical and lived sometime in the 700s BC. As to Jesus Christ the impact of the life he lived was so great that all the world measures time based on his entrance into the world. Sure each culture has their own calendars but all the world uses the birth of Jesus of Nazareth to unite the world in time keeping. Now as it also happens to be the case that many larger than life miracles were also attributed to this historical Jesus. If the larger than life impact Jesus had and has on the world is a testament to the great life he lived than maybe there is more truth than fiction to the claims of his miraculous earthly life after all.

Whole books are written on this (as well as imitation of Dionysus and Romulus). Alexander was another, though his image was templated on Heracles and secondarily on Dionysus. Marc Antony even went so far as to dress like Heracles each day, that is, wearing a lion’s skin, and to walk about with Heracles’s club.
Cultural impact of an ancient legend is no gage on its veracity.. in any way whatsoever. There is also a huge difference around the story. Zeus as father = huge boost for kingship in the Greco-Roman world. God as father = NO credibility and NO boost in the Judaic world, the Jews were close enough to those Greco-Romans, and sufficiently hateful of their religion (getting into Pilate's palace would make them unclean for Passover!), so that anyone within that world would immediately know that kind of claim would be a bad move, tactically.

Hellenistic Jews and Romans commonly identified the two deities as one and the same. Jesus was vying for messianic credibility in Matthew. So, having the Jewish deity as parent only made sense. Easy to take shots at events that happened thousands of yeas ago. I was an atheist until I investigated the claims of the Bible and secular evidence (example: prophecy in Old Testament about the coming messiah, Dead Sea scrolls dated long before Christ). The last step in salvation is faith but there is plenty of evidence to make the case for Christ. Romans 1 says that we have no excuse for not believing when Gods creations make it evident. Plutarch says that the divine conception was prior to the night planned for their “consummation” (wedding night first intervourse). The passage we read was that of Plutarch, following the prior Hellenistic historians Satyrus and Pompeius Trogus. The signet ring on the yet “sealed” (virgin) womb and the non-penetration by Zeus indicated a parthenogenesis in this case, the most famous parthenogenesis is classical antiquity.

You didn’t give the rest of the story, the serpent laying beside her in bed, why would we even find these kind of descriptions? These descriptions just take away from the story of her being virgin and add confusion.
We have nothing at all that looks like Jesus here. We have this serpent lying by her side. So there’s this serpent theme thats imbedded in some of these Greco-Roman alleged parallels. But here when it comes to Alexander, I think this implies some kind of a sexual relationship if he (Philip as recorded in Plutarch) thought that she was the consort (of some kind of deity) But it’s also an interpretation of a dream. So it’s very unclear that she was not engaged in any kind of sexual activity.
So the closest thing that we have in Alexander’s birth, is that it’s attributed to some type of transcendent activity. (So a miracle birth) but that’s not the focal point of Christs birth, the focal point is his immaculate conception or virgin birth (not just some miracle birth) which is clear in the New Testament text, without any references to dreams or to creatures or animals lying beside them, in what looks like an act of seduction.
Also keep in mind Plutarch from which we get most of these miracle birth narratives with Alexander the Great are from his lifetime of about 50 ad to 119 ad. So this could In fact be AFTER the virgin birth narratives of Jesus. So there’s a lot of speculation in so many ways, including the synchronistic elements of which you claim the New Testament might have copied.

So pointing to the serpent merely underscores a different divine parent.. this was a Macedonian myth, with Macedonian motifs, with Zeus siring the child by his divine thunder bolt. Plutarch we know made deep extensive use of the prior Hellenistic historians, specifically the two I mention above. He was not in the business of making up tales. He was first a philosopher and merely drew on and leveraged (as his rhetorical strategy) already well-recognized (culturally dominant) stories. By 120 CE, Jesus was still a nobody on the grand stage of classical antiquity and, as such, Plutarch exhibited no awareness of even the existence of the cult and certainly had no cause to imitate it. The ancient Hellenistic and Roman world was replete with claims of demigod birth, particular regarding the rulers.. much political propaganda involved this as seen strewn throughout the chief historians through the periods. This is all well-documented in my book and in classics generally. The snake stretched out, as with the Augustus birth myth, merely signaled the deity’s parentage (that is, the non-mortal father). Well I think YOU need to have a MORE holistic view of the overall Greco-Roman myth of birth and what it meant to get a better understanding, one example would be how Zeus impregnated others, in different tales.

So in summery
Alexander the Great was said to be "virgin-born" by some scholars, as his mother claimed to have had divine intervention in her conception, which most likely involved sex with a deity to give birth to a Demi-god. So none of this mirrors Jesus and his virgin birth.

We know all the stories but the fact of the matter is from the very beginning God foretold his plan and Satan plagiarized what God was doing and planted these stories. They don't negate the truth and all those other false claims hold no truth like the Gospels do. All real historians Christian and non Christian know Jesus lived was Crucified under pilate was in a rich man's tomb and 3 days later the body was gone history doesn't deny this. The only question is what happened to the body. The disciples definitely couldn't steal the body under Roman guard.

Yes, it seems like scholars keep finding examples of more and more parallels which the gospel writers merely reworked to fit their own ideas. Of course, there really could have been a Jewish god-man born in Bethlehem, despite that. But it seems an all-knowing god would have been aware of these tired old trops by that time, and chose a different way for Jesus to come into the world.
