  • Sacre Coeur is a Roman Catholic basilica located at the summit of the butte Montmartre in Paris, France. It was commissioned by the French government in 1873 as a morale-building exercise for the French after devastating, war-torn years. The basilica was designed by architect Paul Abadie, who employed elements from Romanesque and Byzantine styles, resulting in a somewhat eclectic style that deviates considerably from familiar works of French architecture. The basilica is built of travertine stone quarried in Chateau-Landon, France, which is extremely hard with a fine grain and exudes calcite on contact with rainwater, making it exceptionally white. This material does not change color due to oxidation and can maintain a white color for a long time.
The basilica's interior is decorated with the largest mosaic in France, covering an area of 473.78 sqm. The mosaic represents the Sacred Heart of Jesus glorified by the Catholic Church and France, and the Latin phrase "In the most holy Heart of Jesus, fervent France, penitent and grateful" can be read on the ceiling of the apse. The largest bell in France, called la Savoyarde, is inside the Basilica and is measuring 3 meters in diameter and weighing 18,835 kg.
Visitors can climb the 237 steps to reach the basilica and enjoy the panoramic view of Paris from the observation platform. The basilica is open daily for visitors, and admission is free. The main decorations of the basilica are the stained glass windows and mosaic "Christ in Majesty."
