Israel is not the society it used to be under Shimon Peres or Yitzhak Rabin. Today's Israel has far more settler extremists and other far-right elements. Netanyahu is a moderate. This aspect gets far too little media attention in the US. Israelis overwhelmingly want Palestinians to vanish into thin air. And they are cheerleading what the International Court of Justice has ruled is plausibly a genocide unfolding.

I think while Parsi's assessment of the Isr prime minister's motivation to continue military actions may be valid, he may be missing the larger context, i.e., the whole administration, including people who may take over if he leaves, all support the same policies if not harsher ones. Not to mention that the majority of the Isr population supports what's going on.
Whether the prime minister stays or leaves for his personal legal reasons may not change what's happening on the ground.

Why is Israel invading Rafah?
Simple, after 7 months of fighting, they still haven't freed the hostages nor made HAMAS surrender.
The hostages are the only negotiating power Gaza has. That's why they were collected in the first place. Releasing them in exchange for nothing makes no sense for them. Hamas has been trying to barter them for an end to the slaughter with no success. Hamas will release them for: “[a] ceasefire, complete withdrawal, dignified exchange, reconstruction, and lifting of the blockade." Thats pretty reasonable tbh. If you think Hamas should surrender and that no group whatsoever should militarily defend Gaza and the whole of Palestine as its wiped off the map by Israel (via genocide + settlements) then I dont think anything Palestine does will please you other than permitting Israel to erase their existence with settlements (see West Bank) or trap them in an open air prison (see Gaza 2005-present).
