Beirut: Hassan Chaito scored twice in the first half as Lebanon made a belated start to the qualifying campaign for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup after recording a 5-2 win over Thailand at a windy Beirut Sports City Stadium on Friday.
Theo Bucker's side, who resume their bid qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, lost 5-0 to Iran in last month's Group B opener but were three goals up in just over half an hour against Thailand as Mohamad Haidar added to Chaito's early double.
Hassan Maatouk made up for a first-half penalty miss by adding a fourth in the second half either side of goals from Thailand substitute Thitiphan Puangjan before Abbas Ali Atwi sealed Lebanon's win in stoppage time as Bucker's side joined Iran and Kuwait, who meet in Kuwait City on Tuesday, at the top of Group B having played one game more than their fellow table-toppers.
"I'm happy with this win and pleased with the performance that we showed today," said Lebanon coach Theo Bucker.
"We prepared very well and the atmosphere was good in the team. The result proved that Lebanon have good players who can develop if they are taken care of.
"We made some changes in the midfield to improve our attacking performance although we still lost many balls in the second half. We tried our best to have good balance but we gave Thailand a chance to score two goals from the mistakes that we made," added Bucker
Having been outplayed in Tehran last month as Iran ran out 5-0 winners, Lebanon made the ideal start against Thailand as Chaito (pictured centre) took one touch on the edge of the area to skip past Apiwat Ngualamhin from Abbas Atwi's pull back before firing through the legs of goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen after just six minutes.
Lebanon doubled their lead midway through the first half as Chaito again got the better of Apiwat on the edge of the area before firing high past Siwarak after 22 minutes.
Thailand coach Winfried Schafer introduced Thitiphan at the expense of Jakkapan Pornsai in an attempt to turnaround the visitors' fortunes, but Lebanon's third arrived 14 minutes before half-time as Haidar's angled strike from the left side of the area took a crucial deflection off Apiwat to find a way past Siwarak at his near post.
Lebanon were handed a chance to further increase their advantage six minutes before half-time, but after picking himself up after being upended by Thitiphan just inside the area, Maatouk saw his tame penalty saved by Siwarak.
And Thailand grabbed a potential lifetime just four minutes into the second half as Thitiphan slipped as he attempted a first-time strike from the edge of the area and the ball ballooned up in the air and flew into the top corner past a helpless Abbas Hassan in the Lebanon goal.
