Let me know if you live near Philadelphia and want an ebike. I am getting a lot of offers and I plan to take everything I can get. I won't accept money from the manufacturers, but I sure as hell will trade and sell!

Rinoa on the ebikes they often configure the "wheel diameter" in the display, manufacturers will often set the wheel diameter slightly higher, for faster readings on the display, to make it appear as if an ebike goes faster. Setting the wheel diameter can often be tricky, since many of these ebikes use 4" wide fat tires, and are larger than the rim diameter that we refer to them by. For example a 20" wheel that is 4" wide is actually more like 22" in diameter if you want the speedometer to be correct.

To get an accurate value for wheel circumference, I find a place where I can ride the bike (with intended accessories/equipment etc), with a dab of paint or some other wet indicator on the tire tread, along a firm surface (concrete floor etc). Then measure the actual distance marked on the floor.

Maybe the speedometer is designed to read low so you get more speed without breaking some stupid legal limits? It seems like every jurisdiction in the world has different limits on ebikes.

Oh, you know what, you just need a cassette motor that replaces the set of gears with a small, somewhat large diameter pancake motor. There will still be freewheel action, and one gear can be used to pedal assist the bike. The derailleur might get in the way, but there still probably is room for a troquey motor, a torque arm is also easily installed on any bike, and the added higher speed gear and optional front 1,2 or 3 gears can compensate having just 1 gear in back. The derailleur can have just a spacer to hold it out of the way or a way to stick it either in the innermost or outermost position depending on motor construction. Inboard toward wheel would be best mechanical postion, and the motor can have a plastic guard or something to keep it from going outwards.
Then its just a simple inline connection to the controller, and 2 battery wires, and 1 cable to throttle.
It would use good quality original bike wheels, it would be easy to install, it can be fin cooled because its spinning and out of the way, and it would use 1 to 3 speeds from the original bike gearset.
    I think it would work.
Would take machining, and a bit of design work, but, doable.
Building a prototype would mean some machining and use of special through hole motors, but it can be done.
I think rotor would spin with the magnets, and the stator would be inverted facing inwards, with it mounted stationary to the bike frame with just a couple simple ties or screws, or, it could be interlocking with the bike frame at the skewer part.
Its a module with fair universal implementation. Small, compact light, use of least amount of additional materials.
I think an open source controller should be built something that can use the bike frame as the heatsink, like where bottle holders would be.
Open source battery voltage range too, modes for current draw. Push button controller, no display, heavy duty throttle, connectors and high quality wires
It could all be so great. But you know chinese drag ass when it comes to quality.

We are both 5’ 8” if I recall correctly. Id recommend it more if you are 5’ 6” or shorter. Or maybe if you just have shorter legs
