  • Over the past few weeks, Air Canada's been flying a number of domestic widebody flights as travel ramps up again, and for the most part, these flights are relatively full.
Relatively full, that is, in Business Class and Economy - but Air Canada also has a Premium Economy cabin on their widebodies that doesn't seem to get much love on domestic flights.
Today, I check out Air Canada's domestic Premium Economy on their 787-8 Dreamliner, with a hint of nostalgia!

I wish I knew about planes earlier on so I could remember the planes I've been on. I only recently started to get into it and I've been on a lot of planes, especially on air Canada and the only one I remember is the 777

I recently flew Premium Economy YVR-YYZ and I am happy to see a lot of the amenities back that were cancelled due to Covid.
Pre departure juice/water/hot towels. Printed menus. Hot meals served in two courses. Coffee in China mugs. Drinks in real glass. If upgrade prices remain low like you saw 6 months ago, it’s a pretty good deal.

If it's cheap it's worth it even just to not get told you can't order a leftover J class meal just because it's not on the menu or that you must make every effort to finish your meal in only 15 minutes.

If you want the lounge access, it's only $25 for Premium Economy ticker holders. But I remember you needed to buy it 24hr prior to your departure, so maybe not available if you upgrade it at the airport.

I flew AC's Dreamliner in premium economy weekly for three years between Vancouver and Toronto when they first introduced the service. In the beginning I regularly had to remind the attendants that the meal and "drinks" were free in this class of service - it was like they didn't know the class existed! After a couple of months they eventually figured it out.
As an AC frequent flyer I really like Premium Economy, it's a great value, especially on long flights. Absolutely love the Dreamliner btw! Really enjoy the content of your channel!

I have to agree, your view, while good, would have been even better just slightly forward. The DreamLiner's in Air Canada livery are spectacular. I recently had my first flight on 777, next on my bucket list is a DreamLIner ride. You do very nice work Alex!

I have a fond memory of this particular Dreamliner. A large portion of my family works for Air Canada (other people in comments don't get ideas) so I managed to get access to an employee event for the aircrafts debut. Yes, I did sample every seat type on the aircraft. However that remains the only time I have ever been on a Dreamliner as I have yet to fly on anything bigger than a Q400 since then.

C-GHPQ was also the plane AC used when they unveiled the new livery. I flew on it LHR-YYC in 2016, when still in the old colours.

Thanks for another great review, Alex! Hard to believe the 787 has been in AC's fleet for that long and I still haven't flow on it! That will change in Oct as I am booked on the 787-8 from YVR to YYZ on my way to YHZ. I am booked on the 737-MAX to Halifax (previously flew on the MAX pre-grounding) and then flying the E175 to Montreal followed by the A220 back to YVR, which will also be my first time on that aircraft. I think other avgeeks can relate to my tendency to book flights based on aircraft rather than time, price, etc. lol. I may consider an upgrade to Premium, although I am booked in the preferred seat right behind Premium so it may not be worth it.

The same planes are used on international flights so it's not really true to say it's a domestic product. Having said that you are right - it's a great sweet spot for transcontinental routes.

In a recent financial analyst teleconference AC spokesperson was asked of they would expand premium economy and she responded with a firm NO and that Air Canada was very happy with its aircraft densification programme. (their terminology). My guess is that they want premium economy to be in "shortage" so yield management will keep prices higher.
Airlines should have kept an undensified coach section (8 across on 787, 32" pitch, 9 across on 777s 32" pitch) and just charge an extra $50 for it compared to Air Canada's highly undesirable coach that turns people off flying.

Can anyone comment...say row 18, bulkhead row behind premium economy on the 787-8... Do those seats have their own entertainment screens to watch? As I see in videos and pictures that there is a screen mounted on the bulkhead wall in front of the seat (just one tv screen). Is seat say 18C worth it on this aircraft ?

It's a shame to see brand new planes with Dehaviland Comet style klunky seating. Those armrests must have hurt. Some plane seats (Rockwell Collins?) have fuzzy armrests that fold away and save weight. All you need is smooth handles on the aisle so stewardesses don't get tossed around like bowling pins. Making the rear of the seat in front of you soft would be much nicer, lighter, and safer than all that plastic and the TV. Whatever the class, seats should be thick.

My mom works for Air Canada. There is no "Domestic premium economy" on any AC widebody. They are international premium economy seats, but they are being used on national routes sometimes during high demand hours. For example, usually Vacounver>Toronto is flown by an A321 but is occasionally flown by 787/777 during heavier demand hours of the day.

Pretty sad to see damaged interior components after only seven years of service. When Air Canada gets back into the black financially-speaking, it should fix these, as it leaves the wrong impression regarding maintenance (and safety).
On another note, very professional report.
