The Blue Line used to change from third rail to overhead wire at Maverick many years ago. More recently they moved the changeover to Airport. The overhead was originally installed because of fears of salt water flooding during storms in the Revere area close to the ocean.
The overhead catenary was installed on the surface part of the Blue Line to reduce the risk of winter ice buildup due to the Blue Line's proximity to the ocean
I dislike the MBTA’s cuts. Why? They say they’re “temporary,” yet the Green Line E branch from Heath Street to Arborway was also discontinued “temporarily.” They chose to cut it permanently instead of restoring service. I fear that may happen with these pandemic-induced cuts as well. I mean, shit, you could’ve EASILY gotten much more trains in that 14-minute timeframe had it not been for those horrible cuts. But enough ranting, great video FR! 👍🏻
3:30 How is the train sparking along the Third Rail if it’s in the middle of braking. The train is using air brakes, obviously. But how is it still arcing though?
Railfanning pretty early for a Monday holiday! Had we been through Aquarium 4 hours earlier, we'd have run into you!

Very nice video!
wow, Boston looks so nice.
Glad to see the platforms at Aquarium are wet as ever lol.
You was with Ben aka NYCTA RAILFAN
awesome videos of trains coming and going. 👍🏻
You have to hold your breath going from Aquarium to Maverick Station since you are going under water!
You should go to Canton Junction or Route 128 next!!!

Regen braking from the motors puts power back into the third rail.
@@FanRailer Oh okay. I see. Thanks.
Is the braking in the overhead section also regen?....
So long as the wire is receptive, it should be.
MBTA: The only subway system what doesn't use headlights
Right idk why
They do, just not in stations
Apparently it's to not blind other drivers
headlights ?
why their headlights red???
The headlights on the Mbta are extremly bright so they have to use red ones so they dont blind passengers
Ok
I have a question about mbta, why do they always have the marker lights instead of the headlights on
They are extremely bright and would blind passengers, So for safety reasons they use red
