Injuries are a test of our inner strength and also a reminder of our humanity. I’ve been sidelined myself the past few weeks. Be patient, stay positive and just do your best!
Great words! Thanks for that comment. I’m definitely staying positive. Gotta make the most of whatever cards we get dealt. And it really makes you appreciate it more when you CAN run! Hope your injury recovers quickly. I feel your pain! (Not literally).
Interestingly enough I do say that in order to know where our limits are, you sometimes have to go beyond them. (But it does suck being limited by my ageing body! Ha!)
I injured the posterior lateral area of my knee a few months ago from boosting mileage too quickly. . And for next two months did all the PT exercises (stretching, foam rolls, massage, strength, cross train, bike)and I got much stronger, but still couldn’t run or walk more than 2 miles without pain. Finally, I just ignored the “experts”, did absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing for 3 weeks. Finally I can run again.
Thanks for your comment! I’m glad you worked your injury out and fixed it! Yeah it’s a fine balance I think. I do think the static biking helped loosen the quads after the needling in particular. But it’s a fine line between helping and aggravating. What a sport!
Absolute bummer, man! Good news is I think you caught it with plenty of time to recover and continue training up for race day. As a newer runner (and over 40) I’m extra vigilant about injuries and overtraining. I think you’re doing great, though! Onward…
That’s for reaching out! It’s definitely no fun but I’m keeping it in perspective at the moment. 3 days off running will probably do me good. If it gets to be more than that they’ll I’ll reassess but you’re 100% right - plenty of time to recover and continue training. Just have to be ultra careful the next few weeks…
I think you’ve got the ability to seriously improve that marathon time. 1:14 for the half is legit. That’s a very fast time. You can run the required pace for half of it, so why not all of it?! :)
What beautiful scenery around you. Sorry to hear you have a niggle. I am taking a few days off too, no pain anywhere, but my Garmin has been telling me my training readiness is 1 since I raced on Sunday 🙈 Decided to pay attention to it for a change! In the gym doing strength sessions instead.
I do have amazing scenery! It’s incredible isn’t it?! That is a very sensible move. You won’t regret that. I actually do pay attention to the TR score on my watch. If it’s as low as that I never run (in fact, I try not to run if it’s under 20). Sounds like you dug deep for that race though. Good for you!
Disaster, hopefully a minor set back. Picked up a pain on the top of my foot after my long run last week so cross training, rowing for the last week with icing & ibuprofen. Taking the time off is definitely best instead of trying to run thriugh it. Back out this morning for a short run & hopefully then back into my plan from tomorrow. You'll be back on the road soon!
Thanks! I’m very hopeful it’s a minor blip and I’ll be back at it soon. Didn’t want to release the video at all but felt like I had to show the bad times too…!
Oh no. Sorry to hear this. Keeping the knee moving is key to helping the stiffness and icing after each activity really helps I found with my knee. You’ll be back running again in no time ❤
Good luck with your injury. Dry needling has worked miracles for me. Whenever I get pain in my left knee I know it is trigger points in the quad and glute. 1-2 needling sessions and I'm good as new. The pain during the needling though.... 😅 PS. What a fantastic scenery with the lake and the mountain view. I wish I had something like this nearby.
Thank you! Yes dry needling is insane. It’s like magic. I had my second session today and I’m super sore at the moment but I’m hoping it’s worked. Time will tell! He also wants me to focus on ecentric quad strengthening. Yes that scenery is world class. The lake was freezing though. I need a wetsuit next time!!
You never mentioned what your physio thought the cause of the issues were. I'd be interested to know. I've learned to become good at listening to my body after years of just trying to push through. It's funny that the "stronger" we are mentally the more damage that we can do to ourselves. It took a long time for me to learn that being in pain was easier than resting and seeking help. I wish that I had been smarter earlier since my "determination" ended up with me having to take long breaks from running and what I really needed was consistency. Oh well, better to learn lessons late than never. I hope you heal as fast as possible!
Yes you’re right. Sorry about that. The cause is not clear. I may have tweaked it doing squats (I think I did) and then exacerbated it with the mileage. Basically it’s a tight left quad pulling on my knee. So he needled that and it was super sore afterwards. So I’ve been trying to actively work it out. The bike has been good for getting rid of stiffness. I’m testing it today and then back to the physio…
Bummer, but its actually super helpful to hear how you're thinking about it and what you're doing about. I'm storing away the info for future reference. Hopefully you'll mend quickly!
Thank you! I’m also hoping for a quick mend!! And I didn’t want to just show the good stuff. It’s a tough thing I’m hoping to do. Things are bound to go wrong. I’m hoping it’s a minor blip and we still have plenty of time for training. I think the key is spotting it early and fixing it before it becomes a serious problem. Young me would have carried on until I was properly broken. Older and wiser maybe?? :)
Thanks for the comment! It took a lot of heartache to take that decision but it was the right one. I’d have done some serious damage if I’d carried on. Fingers crossed for a quick fix! Yeah the lake was stunning. But SO cold. I need a wetsuit next time I think!
Too much km and very intensity workout in few days, doble tresholds sessions and 50 years. You are a power runner but with lower intensitive train schedule you can improve without injuries, good luck and good recovery you can run in 2:30 the marathon with 50 and with 51😊
Yes I didn’t plan to do any speed work in Sunday’s long run but I wanted to help my friend and I also wanted company. I kinda regret doing that but I’m sure that one session wasn’t the cause, more the added accumulation.
As I get closer to 50 I also find that I have to refer to my friends as "very tall friend" or "very young friend" because I can't remember their names.

No, injuries are meaning that you are doing something wrong
Interestingly enough I do say that in order to know where our limits are, you sometimes have to go beyond them. (But it does suck being limited by my ageing body! Ha!)
The views were fantastic!👍

I will die trying to run under 2:30. My first ever marathon was 3:02:47. I am 43 years old now. I run my best half marathon at 1:14 .

@@global-runner : thank you!

Dude, going by the title and thumbnail, I thought you were seriously injured! Good to hear it's not actually that bad though.
Sorry! The honest answer is that at this point I just don’t know. It might be serious, it might not. Today will tell…!

This is what I want to hear! I’m testing it out today so fingers crossed.
Great work on managing your issue - you clearly did exactly the right thing…
Best wishes, mate.

Have a good recovery
Thank you! I appreciate you reaching out!

Thank you!!
Good luck, you will be running in no time.
Thank you!!! 3 days off is just a taper, right? :)
Good luck. ♥
Thank you! Day 3 of no running. I’m not panicking yet. But fingers crossed !!!!

Gutter mate but definitely the best course of action. Wish I had your conviction to shut it down when i get a niggle! That lake looks unreal 😍

😂. This is brilliant!!! Thanks for making me laugh. :)
