    A great, well-explained lecture about the integrated photonics ever, ''the complex functionality of your devices did not come from the fact that the transistor was better, but rather comes from the fact that you integrate so many transistors together into the chip.''

    So a photon will be observed via properly directed mathematics and physics and can then be scaled to create photon circuits that are capable of interacting in a controlled and predictable manner with quarks and atoms that are present in the body or in your environment , the photon configuration that is based on basic quantum mechanics is at the user's control.

    Can light from the sun be converted into a laser (coherent is it?) ? perhaps using the stream of photons from the sun, concentrate and regulate them magically by science, so into without any processing delay introduce it into a river of communications and send it side by side with a "response light" , that would be reflected back in response (from the last fisical device where light is readed, a router ... ), therefore only using sunlight from one side for the full communication.? thanks

      Not directly. You can 'pump; a laser with sunlight, but you cannot directly convert broadband incoherent light into a coherent laser beam (not without a lot of loss). Goes against thermodynamics. You don't want to subject yourself to the wrath of Maxwell's deamon.

      You'll always need a mix of photonics and electronics. Both are good at their own thing really.

    • @arcadealchemist
      @arcadealchemist 2 года назад

      well obviously, till they can make extuded crystal with the optical lanes built in to the crystal framwork and it would just need a light transmitter and receiver i'd assuume at scale this would shrink and clip to a PCB needing no cooling and could prob have multiple slots so you can just scale your performance over time with faster PCBs

    • @wbogaert
      @wbogaert 2 года назад +3

      @@arcadealchemist You have a point that ultra-precise material engineering (at the atomic level) would allow us to make photonic devices more compact. But there are more fundamental reasons why photonics will not replace electronics, and why the two need to be combined for best performance.
      First, photons are much larger than electrons. This might sound strange, but both photons and electrons have a wavelength, which determines the smallest volume in which they can be confined. For a photon in the visible domain, this wavelength is 1000x larger than that of an electron. so if you can make the photonic equivalent of a transistor, it would still be much larger than the electrical transistor. So you cannot scale this to circuits of the same size as today's electronics.
      Second, photons don't like to interact. But interaction is exactly what is needed to perform logical operations. So if you want to make an optical switch (or transistor), you need special materials and a lot of photons to make it work. Electrons-on the other hand, interact quite strongly through electrical forces, and you can make transistors that work on a very small amount of electrons.
      this means that digital logic is most likely to remain an electronic technology. But photons can do very useful things around that. For instance, they can be used to accelerate specific computation (linear transformations, which rely especially on the fact that photons do not interact very well), and communications where photons are not limited by the bandwidth and energy consumption of electrical links. In the end, better and better engineering will eke out the most from each of these technologies, but I don't think we will ever build a full optical replacement of our digital computers.
      One other type of computing where photonics could shine is quantum computing. This again does not replace today's computers but performs specialized computations. There are many researchers and companies working on optical quantum computers.

    • @arcadealchemist
      @arcadealchemist 2 года назад

      @@wbogaert i never said it would replace electronics you'd still need power and transistors caps moss n PCBs we're talking more silicone chips it could replace for some process, but it will take another 2 decades to have it in the home maybe less depends on how quickly the technology develops and with quantum in high demand it maybe a lot sooner than you think , people already selling these solutions claiming 10x faster than GPU solutions and 90% less heat.
      It's more about getting first gen Quantum gates for complex calculations, i'm not even sure what it would be good for but if people don't have applications they want to improve then the technology will sit there for a long time and the tech just becomes super expensive, good thing we're having a global economic crash right now :)
      I just need to know of the technology for it to evolve is all.
      i'm good at manifesting.
