- On Thursday, Northwest China's #Xinjiang completed a 40-year effort to encircle the massive #TaklimakanDesert with green barriers, curbing the expansion of China’s largest desert.

I've noticed that there are a lot of misunderstandings in the comments. What China has been doing is just planting green belts around deserts to prevent them from expanding continuously and to avoid the occurrence of sandstorms and other climate issues. It's not about turning deserts into oases.
Regarding questions like how to turn sand into soil, whether it relies on artificial irrigation and how to achieve it... China has been working on these aspects for 47 years. And ecological balance has been achieved in many places. There are numerous documentaries available for you to watch and explore.
What many people don't know is that there is moisture beneath the deserts. It's just that due to the wind, it keeps flowing and evaporates very quickly.
I have no problem with this kind of party dictatorship, which tirelessly work for a country with a billion and more people and show successful results every half a decade. Love and blessings from India..sadly here we have the malpractice called DEMOCRACY which leaves no room for strong measure even if it aim at future development and sustainability 🙏🙏
Perhaps Evergrande Group and Country Garden can put up apartment buildings around the perimeter to keep the wind from blowing the sand?

If you lived in China and said what you just said, you would be arrested along with your immediate family members.
Desertification, is more and more land in our world turning into dessert, due to the loss of trees, when there are nomplants of trees, there is no water evaporating from the leaves, less to no rainfall, and when there would be rainfall, there are no roots to keep the soil in place, so no nutrients that stay in the soil, and you can mud streams and barren land, that turn into desserts.
I don’t know if this is connected to the dessert in china, but it’s a common problem in the world , when more and more forest is being turned into farmland, we risk desertification due to the lack of rain.
The roots of the greenbelt absorb water, and that water evaporates , creating more rain, yet the rain is locked into the ground due to the plants and trees, reducing the risk of mudstreams and the limiting the dessert to grow larger

Most effective closer to the equator because as you go north the hot solar panel emits more and more heat at a less and less sky facing direction.
But they also block some wind, which in most places drys things out to fast..
So its a mix i suppose. And while the symbiosis you described is great, If we can get away with it, a native ecosystem is better at everything, except making electricity..
So It is great and is a perfict win win in many situations. But often instead of covering parts of ecosystems, we should try to cover buildings and structures. A car park is a great example..
