This makes me imagine him playing it on Pluto and it takes a whole minute for one marble to fall all the way onto an instrument, but the machine is still releasing them regularly so there is just a wall of slowly falling marbles that are still hitting the instruments at the right moment. Sadly they wouldn't gain enough momentum to be able to strike with the force to make audible music.
Totally ingenious. As a master automotive technician, it blows my mind the thought process required to create a such a device. However, I'm surprised he couldn't correct the timing issue in the recording software.

Check out the video from Machine Thinking here: ruclips.net/video/s02m616b5AU/видео.html Two things I forgot to mention: Once we know the values of the Timing clutch, they will always be the same. So live in concert we will know the settings for each song without having to test it every time. “Song 3 = 13 steps +” etcetera. This one adjustment will make sure both that the treadle pedal and the crank hits 6 o clock on the rotation in time with the beat and also make sure that the rhythm machine and marble hits are synched. Yesterday I hit a milestone in the studio, I had a full marble loop with the whole marble lifting system working perfectly for the first time ever, including the conveyer belt, the two gear lifts and the demag wheel. The marble divider has been having an issue where the marbles got stuck on top and I found a super simple solve that reduced resistance for the rolling marbles and that worked instantly. I could have the kick drum playing and the marbles were picked up and transported all the way up. Its getting there. This thing is so much harder to build than what it looks like at first glance. I love how much this episode showed off how truly modular the system is so far. Not only to swap existing parts easily with replacements for repairs, but for upgrades in the future - even adding new features. Excellent engineering.
Pretty sure you've already done the math, but this is the formula I found for the offset you have to apply: offset (degrees) = 3/500 * rpm (crank) * delay (ms) or: offset (steps) = 1/60000 * rpm (crank) * delay (ms) * n (total number of steps)
Once you've got the offset for a certain BPM you should also be able to calculate the offset for any other BPM, if you know the constant travel time of the ball to the drum!
I guess I can create some kind of online calculator website for Martin, but what is most important is that with the measurements on two BPMs and the exact degree offset, we can surely calculate the absolute timing delay from the command wheel to the audible drum, which will be useful for your equations!
With the falling delay we can indeed come up with an equation that describes how much you'd have to adjust the clutch when you are changing pace. Martin, if you're reading this, do you happen to have any more details/measurements?
@@koosnaamloos4291, The delay according to calculations are 180ms, not sure about precision in case of inaccurate measurements. I'll post some texts about the calculation in the main comment session.

Martin, assuming that the amount of steps on the clutch is directly proportional to the bpm, it looks like you can get the amount of steps needed by taking the bpm and dividing by around 4.8. Likewise, you could calculate how many steps you need to add/take away when changing bpm by dividing the change in bpm by about 4.8. This looks like it adds up with your tests in the video. Also, because the marbles accelerate when they fall, marbles with a longer falling distance (like the ones for the vibraphone compared to the kick) will take a little longer to fall and so will be offset by a different amount. You'd lose about 45ms in delay from releasing the marble 30cm above the target as opposed to 20. I'm not sure how important this is, because it should have been definitely noticeable in the first machine, so maybe it's not a huge issue. Humans are imperfect at this, so realistically perfection in this aspect is not essential. TL;DR Looks like you can divide the bpm by 4.8 to get how many steps you should move the clutch from the neutral position for synchronized playing.
I'm not an engineer, I'm a contractor, but I love your comment about the sign of great engineering being that the mechanism looks like it belonged there all along: What a beautiful truth on thought.
Did you take into account atmospheric pressure? You know - changed pressure, changed air density...it definitely changes drag and affect drop time :-). And also remember that the earth is not round - it's rather an oval, so near the poles you have a slightly lower gravity. When you do a world tour you should sort that things up. Seriously: Thank you for being yourself. You have made a ~50 years old man to rediscover the joy of mechanical/electronic/musical tinkering. That's a real meaning of greatness - you enrich other peoples lives :-)
I absolutely love everything about this build series. The complexities, the dedication but above all the collaborations. But I have to admit to having an affinity with the original marble machine. I think its because of it complex simplicity (if that makes sense), it was all hand made and it was built with simple materials. Of course, they both need the genius of Martin to bring them to life.
Aesthetically that piece goes so well with the MMX, and the mechanism of getting the rhythm exact sounds like the kind of ingenuity I hear about in old machines' design from before we relied on computers in nearly everything.
Hey Martin! I’m such a huge fan of your work and the Marble Machine X! I’m absolutely amazed by how much you get done every single week. Every week I see you designing parts, machining, experimenting, assembling, communicating with people around the world, filming, editing, and composing beautiful music. Your work ethic and passion are incredibly inspiring. I just want to take a moment to make sure you’re taking enough time to take of yourself. I just want to make sure you’re getting enough sleep and eating right. I couldn’t think of a greater tragedy than seeing this beautiful machine come to fruition but have you unable to take that world tour due to health reasons. I’m not sure that I can speak for everyone but take it from me: if the completion of this project has to be delayed a couple of months to ensure that you’re staying fit and healthy, then I would more than understand. You’re one of my absolute favorite people on the internet, so stay healthy! With great admiration, Rhys from NotMyMajor
It's funny but almost your exact problem occurs in internal combustion engines. Combustion takes a relatively fixed amount of time, so as engine speed increases you need the spark to come earlier before the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke to burn the fuel in the power stroke.
Sort of, but not in the way I'm talking about. The camshaft opens and closes valves and drives the distributor, but ignition advance is controlled by other means (vacuum diaphragm, mechanical weights, electronic, etc...) to move the spark further before compression tdc as engine speed increases.
@@waterlubber he effectively designed a cam phaser. Basically functions similarly to the means of variable valve timing. Although I have to wonder if he could use a cam phaser for that purpose. Would be an interesting project

@@pippinsmith Yeah, IIRC he mentioned that the drop points are movable up and down the rails, allowing individual tuning of drop timing for every channel!
I think Martin has already built in adjustability to each of the individual channels? That said, I'm not sure how he'll be able to alter each of these in-between songs when playing songs with different tempos live (If he even needs to at all?)
Does this remind anyone of the old IBM Selectric machines? Like a few thousand parts of ingenious engineering beautifully put together and it all functions perfectly.

Going back through this whole series in 2021 to 'like' every video that I forgot to 'like' the first time I watched it. Just showing love to my favorite Swedish wizard. But changing it sometimes because otherwise it looks like spam. And then feeling a little bit silly for doing it. But then regaining my resolve because this man deserves it.
@@Repligon he could easily have a metronome into his in-ear monitors, and have the drum as well (because of multiple microphones) and he can see if he's getting de-synced. I think he's aiming to have just the drum running though, most musicians can at least keep a bpm in their head after some practice.
Exactly my thoughts. I was thinking if the song had a time change, you'd have to stop and adjust, whereas if you had a centrifugal mechanism, it would adjust on the fly
@@chadjensenster I guess for the time being, he could just mute the Rythm Machine while doing a tempo change. Nobody will notice a few milliseconds delay/speed up in the other instruments if the underlying beat is muted. Also keep in mind, for this interval, he still has kickdrum, snare and hihat, which are affected in the same way as the other instruments since they're played with marbles. Once he returns to the song's original tempo, he can switch the Rythm Machine back on and it will be in sync angain.
Cool, think we'll get to see the marbles make a complete journey around the machine soon? It looks like you just need to connect the demagnetizer to the conveyer at this point.
Just found out about machine thinking after finding wintergatan but had no idea they worked together until I saw his video! Music and engineering, my two favorite things!

Epic as usual. I love that this video also briefly goes over some other features of the MMX which is a helpful refresher course and makes the video easier to understand and the engineering even more impressive.
Best video so far! Very complex subject. Elegant engineering solution. Pointer to the Machine Thinking and Wintergatan solution. Your original composition tied everything together. Multicam view showing the parts of the music working together is engaging. An easy to understand audio/visual explanation of the timing problems with the marble machine and how the timing clutch allow for the adjusting of the rhythm assembly to the physical ball release / kick drum real time (IRL) sound. I enjoyed hearing the kick and click track align as you made the clutch adjustment. Your great cinematography and editing brought it to life and your little doodle is an original song for the clutch. Nice B roll audio for future clips. Definitely meets Design Requirement 10: Cool Factor.
Thank you Martin for taking us on this adventure of fail and success, with tears, laughter and sweat on the long and stony way to the world tournee with your Marble Mashine X.
I first saw the Music Timing Clutch, and thought "wow, that looks amazing and perfect!". Then I watched Machine Thinking's video on it, and then I rewatched this, and I now notice the tiny little (mostly cosmetic) imperfections. And I think it's even better because of it, because the Marble Machine X is nothing BUT little imperfections coming together to make something beautiful. I really enjoy these videos.

Even with the book telling you how to work this out that isn't a simple task. Well done very impressive.

Amazing this project worked out so well! I had tears of triumph as you did the homage to Machine Thinking. This is humanity at it's best!
This week on Wintergatan Wednesday: A high calibre calibration collaboration!
That's a tongue twister.
You should definetely release all of these nice pieces of music you composed/played in the mmx project and these videos. :D
Procrastination songs are the best
I absolutely love everything about this build series. The complexities, the dedication but above all the collaborations.
But I have to admit to having an affinity with the original marble machine. I think its because of it complex simplicity (if that makes sense), it was all hand made and it was built with simple materials.
Of course, they both need the genius of Martin to bring them to life.
Machine engineering in symbiosis with music. Just beautiful!
Aesthetically that piece goes so well with the MMX, and the mechanism of getting the rhythm exact sounds like the kind of ingenuity I hear about in old machines' design from before we relied on computers in nearly everything.
Built-in gravity metronome! :D Very cool! Thanks Machine Thinking!
With great admiration,
Rhys

It's funny but almost your exact problem occurs in internal combustion engines. Combustion takes a relatively fixed amount of time, so as engine speed increases you need the spark to come earlier before the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke to burn the fuel in the power stroke.
I wonder if, in the future, he'd be able to repurpose a spark advancer for this.
@@waterlubber no
Thats what cam shafts are for?
Sort of, but not in the way I'm talking about. The camshaft opens and closes valves and drives the distributor, but ignition advance is controlled by other means (vacuum diaphragm, mechanical weights, electronic, etc...) to move the spark further before compression tdc as engine speed increases.
@@waterlubber he effectively designed a cam phaser. Basically functions similarly to the means of variable valve timing. Although I have to wonder if he could use a cam phaser for that purpose. Would be an interesting project
I was visiting Amsterdam for the week, and your channel convinced me to visit Utrecht and Museum Speelklok. Unfortunately, the bell tower was undergoing renovations so I could see it in its full glory, but it still sounded nice. I loved every minute of Utrecht. Fantastic city.
Holy cow, that is an amazing mechanism in every way.
This project has far already surpassed the boundaries between art and engineering
Watching your videos is just like falling into a dream world!
Please keep making such great content.^^
This is so awesome. If you do not come to Southern California so I can hear X play live, I will definitely cry.
So happy that you are collaborating with so many interesting and talented people. That they are helping to realize someone's dream. Now I have more people wirth to following.
I don't even understand anything but I keep watching your video idk why
This was the first episode in a while that got me properly excited for this machines future. That part looks incredibly professional.
Won't you have to make sure now that the marble drops take the exact same time for the kick, vibraphone, snare etc. ?
Yea, I'm worrying about that as well...
i was thinking the same here.
Was thinking this too, they'd have to be cadded to all have the same falling distance, but I believe that was controllable at the dropper
Not gonna lie, the mutual respect and appreciation made me teary. Seriously... You both rock.
Does this remind anyone of the old IBM Selectric machines? Like a few thousand parts of ingenious engineering beautifully put together and it all functions perfectly.
Man, it's incredible seeing this thing coming together and all the different people contributing to its design and creation, it's awesome!
*sees complicated mechanical object*
“Ehh probably too complicated” *leaves it alone for half the day*
*sees the same thumbnail again but also notices wintergatan*
S***, here we go again
Nice engineering on that solution. This thing is really coming together. I am excitedly waiting for the final result. I know it's a long way to go, but these weekly videos make the wait bearable. This really is a highlight of my week.
If Leonardo da Vinci had a RUclips channel... So interesting!
I know, right?!
I have developed a theory that he is Da Vinci in disguise
Going back through this whole series in 2021 to 'like' every video that I forgot to 'like' the first time I watched it. Just showing love to my favorite Swedish wizard. But changing it sometimes because otherwise it looks like spam. And then feeling a little bit silly for doing it. But then regaining my resolve because this man deserves it.
You should design a variable speed gear system that uses centrifugal force to automatically adjust the beat offset.
I thought he needs the drum to help him manually maintain speed. Centrifugal governor would be a better fit for this, though.
Something like a centrifugal governor and a CVT
MMX is such a beautiful machine to watch work. Even if I was deaf I would still appreciate the complexity and attention to detail.
Cool, think we'll get to see the marbles make a complete journey around the machine soon? It looks like you just need to connect the demagnetizer to the conveyer at this point.
Check the description, he succeded in doing so
Just found out about machine thinking after finding wintergatan but had no idea they worked together until I saw his video! Music and engineering, my two favorite things!
"Ode to Machine Thinking" sounds straight out of Sonic The Hedgehog
Amazing how you were able to explain to him what you needed and he was able to build it for you. Great work from you both. What great talent and great minds.
Cant wait for the finished machine... it will be awesome
Awesome engineering, killer results,
and everyone should watch the building of this gorgeous piece of machining.
SO MUCH WIN! Hearing that fine tuning in on the beats... pure satisfaction.
The opening to "Ode to Machine Thinking" reminded me of the Mega Man II title theme.
Wow. I'm just stunned at both the amazing mechanical engineering that has been added to MMX, and your corresponding glorious ode. Bless your work, Martin
Music, engineering, computer modeling, welding, cinematography?
Is there anything this man cannot do?
Speak danish! :)
Finish the Machine and walk Away.
The MMX is so inspiring. You truly are a genius (and yes, I know you worked for it.) I cannot wait to see the world tour, but seeing every stop of the process getting there gets me just as excited as the show will.
Indexable Clutch... for the win! Great stuff! I look forward to Wednesday's. :-)
I am always absolutely blown away every Wednesday by how everything on the MMX is taken into account.
When he started unboxing the timing clutch and put on those gloves, I immediately felt like I was watching an episode of The Relaxing End for a brief moment.
Epic as usual. I love that this video also briefly goes over some other features of the MMX which is a helpful refresher course and makes the video easier to understand and the engineering even more impressive.
Ww- "...Let's do seven lines!"
RUclips- "Demonitize?"
It is Wednesday my dudes...
Indeed
Sup my dude
Arer you a bot? You're so quick.
How are you this fast every week? Have you made a bot just to post a comment
already Thursday where I am :) (and seeing this vid is how I know i"m up too late and should get to bed!)
Thank you Martin for taking us on this adventure of fail and success, with tears, laughter and sweat on the long and stony way to the world tournee with your Marble Mashine X.
i would say "static phase adjuster coupling", "timing coupling" or "timing Hub" but not a clutch.
A fascinating story, charmingly told. What a lovely quixotic project. Kudos to all.
Wintergatan is the best
Mind blown by the time, the energy and dedication going into this project.
This is the tale of an inspired pioneer unfolding in real time.
OCD is the what you are trying to say. His Mind is clearly very task centered.
I feel sorry for him. That is a very hard way to live.
Hot damn, that song in the montage is EXTREMELY catchy. Will we ever get a full version?
Agreed.
I want to download the Ode to Machine Thinking as well, so I may jam out with it.
One of the best collaborations I have ever seen and both are geniuses.
*sees thumnail* ooo perdy ring ad
*realizes the BG is white and its about time for wintergaten weds* oooo perdy gears
*clicks video*
Your videos are a weekly burst of happiness and your music makes me move, I love it
i replayed the song starting a 2:45 like 5 times because it's so catchy xD
I first saw the Music Timing Clutch, and thought "wow, that looks amazing and perfect!". Then I watched Machine Thinking's video on it, and then I rewatched this, and I now notice the tiny little (mostly cosmetic) imperfections. And I think it's even better because of it, because the Marble Machine X is nothing BUT little imperfections coming together to make something beautiful. I really enjoy these videos.
tis indeed the third twenty four hours, those in which i label: 'my dudes'
Two heads are, indeed, better than one! Yet more proof of the majesty of the human endeavor and its neverending ingenuity!! I say a sincere and heartfelt bravo to all of your accomplishments, alone and collective, and I raise a glass to many, many more!!! 🍻🥂
Another wednesday, another episode! I love the fill song, you can just hear the beat:
pro - cras - ti - nation - pro - cas - ti - nation - pro - cas - ti - nation : Can you tell I'm supposed to be doing homework right now?
I'm a clockmaker by trade. I've had to make the musical cylinder before which has all the pins in it for clocks and music boxes. There is a algorithm you use to work out where to pin the cylinder. Even with the book telling you how to work this out that isn't a simple task. Well done very impressive.
