  • Adam Fiori from Chandler Limited presents the RS124 compressor, part of their acclaimed Historic Abbey Road Products series. It has a lovely, colorful sound, and a colorful back story. In the late 1950s, EMI procured several Altec 436B tube compressors for their London studios. In 1960, EMI engineers modified them so heavily (and as they were never used outside of Abbey Road), they felt comfortable re-naming them, and thus, the RS124 was born. Actually, one guy knew what to do, and built me and a few people units. But except for those few, these are the first ones issued to match the originals. Highly recommended. It's possibly one of the world's greatest compressors, as those who once had the plug in (no longer made) will attest.

So he had access to Abbey Road and it’s equipment?

@@profile2047 Yes, in the early 2000s (long before anyone cared, before our Recording the Beatles book even told the world about these compressors.) Things were different then. They used to throw away a lot of stuff we all consider priceless now...

Sounds "literally" jump out of the speaker?!
Maybe I don't want this after all.

Since Chandler priced themselves not only out of the market but off the planet... some 18yo kid made eagle cad files of three of their compressors and is now selling clones and a DVD with the schems to anyone with the dough.
Can't say that's cool but that's life. Seek and you will find excellent complete units and kits in the gearhead engineering groups.

I'm sure this is an excellent product; however I stumble when they reference this unit with the (Beetles) I love the Beetles music for the song and its message not paying attention to the sonics and or clarity as music in the 1960 sound very thin and noisy and very analog...The problems are one would probably pay in the $3k area for this unit which is expensive as oppose to lesser than compressors today that would rival this RS124 in all areas of reproduction and music thumbprint...I would buy this unit (Only) for its historical attributes and having bragging rights of this unit...Some of my music friends will display their music rig and would say most if not all my mixes will sound better than any of the Beetles song in terms of (Sonics) The Beetles have great songs and their storytelling is historic...I think the RS124 possibly lived up to it 60 yrs ago as in today's time I don't think I want my mix to mirror the Beetles!
