I'd be even more liberal with the subculture gatekeeping (15:53) and say that the look can be entirely separate from the sound can be entirely separate from the attitude. Like, you can look emo without listening to MCR, or the other way around. You also don't have to be sad or angry as a part of your style. The same way someone can sport a punk mohawk without listening to NOFX or can listen to Anti-flag without actually being an anti-statist. I think Pale Wavves makes the statement pretty well by being a synth-pop artist that looks goth, or even Lady Gaga who makes pop music but has always been a metalhead. People can look, sound, and act however they want. You can say someone is "not real emo," but at the end of the day, it's really just up to them whether or not they... care?

Look, dress, act, and listen to whatever music you want, but i'd say that if you're also going to label yourself "emo" for example, you should at least have the entry level knowledge, and since emo IS a music style, it would be a little weird if you were emo but didn't like/listen to emo music. It's also important to remember not to steal another alt subculture's label, if that makes any sense. Like what's happening with grunge for example. People have given grunge a completely new definition and those who stuck true to grunge's true meaning are pissed off, for good reason. I think in that situation gatekeeping probably isn't the right word. Subculture's have their specific criteria to label yourself as such, but of course you can sport a mohawk without being punk. I think everyone probably just needs to learn to be a little more respectful toward each other.

I went to goodwill today and got a bag of letter and pony beads. I saw a neon yellow letter one and then realised something. "This bead says time on it lol" *flips over* "will....WAIT-" somehow I now own the same "will time" bead as acidmilk except mine is painful yellow.

i hate stretch magic not only because it distegrates or however u spell it but i used to skate alot and when i was first starting out making kandi i made a whole bunch of singles out of stretch magic and i fell ONCE and THE SHIT JUST FLEW EVERYWHERE omg i was so mad and and i would literally spend hours only making one bracelet cuz at the start i was so clumsy and i think not only that just stretch magic is horrible to start out with or something cuz my hand kept slipping idk and was like oh did i tie it wrong or something but no it is just stretch magic and any other flimsy strings now i use only elastic cord for singles and if i need to for like a carousel cuff at the end layers i use tighter less stretchy cord

Also, regarding hairdressers not knowing how to cut emo hair, that's not completely true. I was lucky enough to get someone who used to cut a lot of emo hairstyles back in the day, so she knows what she's doing :3 u just gotta ask around !
