Just thought I'd share this. I raised rabbits for meat and show for over 20 years. We also had chickens, ducks, geese and tried pheasants. Those were more work than they were worth. One time a feather from one of the birds ended up in one of the buck cages. I never saw an animal, especially a rabbit, have that much fun with a feather. That buck drug it around, threw it over his head, tossed it every which way. He'd shake it so it slapped his sides, raked it across the cage wires making that flapping sound of a card on a bike tire spokes. He did this for hours on days until the feather disintegrated. I gave him another of the same color/size. Nope. It was something about that specific feather. Cheers.
Yes rabbits can be comical too! I had a white doe named Snowball who would stick her head in an empty water can & hop around until it fell off. Sometimes she would stick her head in again & do the same thing over, even jumping up onto her bedding box with it still on her head! 😂😂😂 (For those of you who might think it was just because the water was gone, not so, she would sometimes purposefully dump the water out so she could parade around!)
I also had a doe who was super aggressive to the point that I could almost not feed her because she would lunge at my hand as soon as I opened her cage. She went to the pot very quickly. You also typically do not want to breed with such an aggressive doe as she could pass that gene on... Kits are doing good! keep it up!
Oh Cash, what a very handsome & animated gentleman! Awesome to see this litter go to 4H kids. Our boy is in two clubs (beef & shooting), and it's been wonderful for him. This litter is really very pretty in coloring/marking. Had they headed to freezer camp, those hides would be lovely! Excellent content as always.💯✌️
That's too bad about your New Zealand Doe. Looks like we both had problems this week! I really enjoyed seeing all of your rabbits. This cold snap definitely showed my flaws with some things including water. I need to prepare them for winter.
Yeah it was a let down for sure, and I really don't have an extra hutch to pick up a NZ buck. Sorry about your buck, that's always really hard. As far as the cold goes, yeah... learn as you go. We change things every year as we discover new ways of doing things.
It is great to see the kids actively involved in homestead chores. Don't give up on quail yet, they look like a very productive animal for a small homestead. I am considering going with quail over chickens as first animals to our homestead, with rabbits second. The quail just seem to be a choice to be considered with smaller space needed, fast growing, quicker to maturity and laying of eggs or to be harvested for meat. Thank you and your son for taking us along for chores.

Oh and my elop babies I did not have foster possibly at the time. My doe had a hard time with 7! Her second litter she had 13. I “shelved” the babies every day. I took out the best fed then placed in a box literally away from mom. Then let the babies who were less fed be fed first then put back the shelved group. My doe would go back and second time feed them!! Rabbits only feed once a day. But it worked with big litters.

I also ordered some Glass Gem corn seeds from you and they arrived great! They are so pretty and I can’t wait to try my hand at growing some.
I've been raising NZ/California crosses for about 4 years. We also got a Silver Fox buck for a while. One of our does dropped 11 kits last year, while the average is around 7 for all. The ones I've put on the ground have all been diggers. Not just a small hole either. Tunnels. lol If I walked on top of them I'd fall in up to my knee ! Thanks for sharing the information. Nice job feeding young man ! I can't get my 12 year old to maintain interest.
I recently got a New Zealand doe that wouldn't lift, and would mount the buck! A rabbit breeder near me explained table breeding. I used the tactic on this aggressive doe, and it worked. Not only that, but once she was bred, she calmed way down. You may conciser trying it.
If I had a NZ buck to breed her to then I would, but she's really a mess, and not really up to standards for what I like to keep as breeding stock. I'm noticing more things about her. I will remember that though, thanks!

I had a rex doe when I first started but no buck so I took her to a friend's farm to get bred. She was crossed with a New Zealand. The kits turned out great and I kept a buck as a breeder.
We loved this video!! We homeschool our five as well. We have 4 rabbits and they are the kids pets. They all live outside and the kids have full responsibility with me overseeing. It’s so good for them and they really enjoyed watching your son take the same responsibility! Way to go bud!!
Yeah she is going to have 1 last litter, and be done. Guiness finally talked her into 1 fall off, so we'll save a doe from her, and find her a nice pet home.
She would love to, but we just don't have the hutch space. I gave her the choice to keep Cindy as a non breeder or pick one of her daughters, and have a breeder. She decided she wanted to keep a breeder, because Kirra loves them to have kits. She's a farm girl so she understands those tough choices.
NZ can be cranky with breeding. I had to keep my does next to the buck for a few days before trying. But they are also tasty so either way is a win. :)
Ordered my corn seed 😉 Fall is my favorite time of year, we got 3 days 😱. It snowed on Halloween, it snowed on my birthday Monday. White Christmases are rare in NE Kansas. Usually the cold and snowy part of our winters start in January 😐. Guess the tornado did he a favor by knocking down all those trees, we are going to need all that extra firewood. Off to the reptile expo this afternoon. Now that I'm older I find new ways to make my hubby squirm for my birthday day out. He's terrified of snakes lol. Took me ten years to finally get a snake of my own, so he just might do ok. He can walk past her enclosure now without doing a man walking on a ledge imitation. Have a joyous Sunday!
That is too funny. We once spent a night sleeping on the floor at my brothers house the day after one of his snakes got out and he hadn't found it yet...at least he warned us! Good times!
We had a neighbor give us 2 NZ doe they also behaved like Betty. We harvested them and found out they were very fat. Thanks for letting us know how much to feed.
Great job guys! One thing i will suggest is that you could hold the NZ doe in the cage so she can't bite or move and let the buck breed her. Just grab her scruff and put her in the center of the cage. That sure is disappointing.😔 Glad to see the quail doing good!😉
None of these are going to end up in the pot...🤣🤣😂😂. They are ubber cute. I have to put my feeders on the outside so my daughter can help. It's hard to sell buns around here.
I see you don't have slats in the bottom of your tractor. They don't dig out?? I have slats every few inches in the bottom of mine. Also, how are the grow out rates with those rex's. I have Cal.Wh. and Cal/Flemmish X. and have decent grow out rates, but looking to get a faster turnaround on their weights
The quail look great. We have 5 quail that are great, but 6 in total. one was born with a spayed leg that doesn't seem to be healing. We'll see how it goes.
@@GoodSimpleLiving We started with 30 viable eggs. We ordered 60, float tested them, and only 30 were not floating. Another 15 or so didn't develop during incubation. so it was like 60 of developed eggs that hatched.
Maybe she is prego still give her a few days but u probably right... My new Zealand is usually 30 days I hope she does have babies for you... My new Zealand I put her back in with her 2, 15 week old babies that we are keeping so I can move everyone around in their new pens... she kept trying to attack them so I got her outa there I'm glad we got 1 male and 1 female and we need to find out what the gray one is I'm hoping a girl but I'm thinking he's another boy... I found a good friend to help me process the rest they wanted a rabbit so I told them if they help me I will give them one and they liked that deal it's time since I've got 2 other litters 2 weeks and the other one is 2 days old... Thanks for all your videos they helped me find the confidence that I can raise healthy food for my family and pets :)
I've noticed that my giant rabbit babies are less jumpy nervous than the new Zealands babies at a day old yesterday they were already squaking and trying to jump out of my hands more nervous than the giant babies... Maybe the moody thing is a real thing from the beginning?? They both have California daddy's
@@GoodSimpleLiving sounds pretty... My giants attitude is much better she doesn't like me bugging her babies but she's all good she nibbles on my finger sometimes if she's trying to tell me something lol but it doesn't hurt love nibbles lol... But ya they don't make good meat rabbits on their own more bone less meat... I'm hoping mixed with the California to get both they also can make better pets with less grump... We are getting these 2 week Olds used to being picked up now that they are all strong and running around now so cute lol we have multiple colors with them too so it's really cute watching them get bigger... My NZ this time had all black my fav color but it's nice to know who's who lol
That's awesome, I hear the giant mixes work out well! Will love to hear your experience. If we do NZ again I think I will go for reds or blacks. The white just creep me out.
Thanks for sharing. Your little man is doing an awesome job. .will you be visiting your new build site any time soon? Any word from border services . Your husband is probably over qualified 🤔hope you're having a great weekend 🇨🇦 Craig
I think he is, but the job is solid. I hope it works out, but only God knows. Finally his medical was cleared after 7 months of waiting, so now we wait again for them to schedule his poly and drug testing. We should hopefully have some answers by summer, but the plan is to move forward regardless.
Wow that would have been scary with the doe going after your buck. Glad he didn’t mount backwards like younger bucks tend to. Quick question on breeding window. Do we have 24 hours to complete a breeding attempt? I put the doe in with the buck last evening and she was not receptive. I waited a few hours and tried again. This time she was receptive to one fall off. New buck though and I’m not sure he didn’t aim too high. I want to try for another fall off in that 24 hour window but I was told you could possibly get a double pregnancy that could kill the doe? Can you confirm please? Excellent job on the chores btw, lots of responsibility there, Hat’s off.
@@BrianBriCurInTheOC thanks for the info. No, for boarder patrol you have to work the Southern boarder, but not for customs. He's waiting to be scheduled for the next test.
Damn, I feel bad for the pet rabbit I had when I was a kid. I never gave it all this extra stuff. It was evil so I left it alone a lot. Now I know better for next time!
One of the reasons my family (including my 9 and 11 year old kids) like your channel is because of the music, and video editing you do on your videos. If you don't mind sharing a trade secret, what is the name of the software you use for those things? Over the last couple of months, we have started meat rabbits (and you have been great on answering the couple of questions we have asked in the past) and I have been recording using my smart phone, but I haven't been editing and would really like to get into that so it's more entertaining and direct. Any advice or suggestions on the programs that you know about are greatly appreciated.
Oh thank you, I've really been trying to get better. All I use to record is my S10 phone. For editing I use Filmora Pro. It's very affordable, and after you use it 2 or 3 times it's very fast, and simple. I am not very tech savvy at all.
I’m a fellow rabbit breeder and I saw your buck has almost a dewlap that should only be in female buns you might check him out make sure it’s not abases (could just be extra skin like a normal dewlap) but he isn’t showable sadly. I would hate to have the bunny in pain or pass away on you! I love you set up the babies are perfect colors I’m jealous.
A small dewlap on the Standard Rex is actually quite normal, and still permissible for showing. Some breeds are allowed it, because they are quite common with the breed, and others do not allow for it for show standards. The French Lop and the Rex (Standard size) are both allowed it since it's so common for the breed.
@@GoodSimpleLiving - I knew it! I m relatively new to your channel (love it, by the way!) and have heard her sing. I thought it was her! Beautiful voice. But more importantly - a beautiful soul.
I absolutely love this channel, it's informative and you seem to really love and really care about your animals. I do have a question though, I know rabbits have sensitive respiratory systems and cats can carry some pretty wild germs sometimes, do you ever worry about infection when they interact? This is NOT implying your cats are unhealthy, im just really curious!
Newzeland rabbit Spin her around lift her back end up some when buck mounts. This will change her additude sometimes if she takes. Some females after this become good mothers. Also take female to the males cage. Females get protective of there nesting areas.
Good Simple Living Do you have an inexpensive brand you’ve found without? I’m trying to find what to feed my breeders without making the meat crazy expensive.
your quail looks like the smaller one is a male.. the larger one looked very speckled on its chest indication of a female. Thank you for your videos! We are new to meat rabbits.
I'm here in Eastern Iowa and I'd love to try raising meat rabbits, I'm just worried about the harsh winters we have. Last winter we had -30 temperatures and wind chills near -60. Are putting your rabbits in a tractor a must? Also, how do you sustain them in the winter? And are some breeds built better for extreme cold? Alot of questions, I know! Great video.
Hi Roy, thank you for your questions. Yes there are more cold hardy breeds, and in extreme temps I would move them to a garage, greenhouse, or barn to get them out of any wind or damp conditions. Rabbits are very cold hardy, it's heat that will get them. I would not breed in the winter however, kits will not fair well in anything below 20 degrees. Breed fall, summer, and spring, and move breeders out of weather in winter. It can be done! A tractor is not a must, just cuts down on feed costs, and allows them some freedom.
Hey ive got a question about the bunnies after you ween them off the Doe... Can you put the fryers all in one larger cage together until they reach weight??? I'll have 3 doe's and I was wondering if there were any issues with the babies being in 1 large cage together. They would also be very close in age
Question... I am starting to raise rabbits (Rex breeding pair and a NZ bred to our Rex) but we heard from another breeder that using the tractor and letting our rabbits graze can give them worms before we harvest them. Have you ever had an issue with anything like that?
Thank you, that's a very good question. So no we have never had any worms in our growouts, or our breeders, but they only graze our yard. Wild rabbits can pick up worms, especially in the warmer months, if they are grazing where wild animals graze, and poop. Some parasites can come from the ground itself, but most are passed from animal to animal by eating off the forest ground. Keep the ground fresh, and move them 1 or 2 times a day. A rabbit will chew the grass to nothing, and get into the soil if you don't make sure they have plenty of grass to graze on. I hope that answers your question... basically keep them on fresh grass, and move often so they only eat the top half of the grass, and don't get into the soil. Don't tractor them where wild animals eat like in a forest.
@@GoodSimpleLiving ok i used to have a rabbit farm but they lost there fur & they died. :( by the way merry christmas & a very happy new year to all of you. GOD BLESS stay safe
So I live in Texas where usually it gets pretty dang hot in the summer. I’m interested in adding a meat rabbit program. I’ve heard you say rabbits don’t do well in the heat. Any suggestions or advice?
I’ve herd of a breed called TAMUK that Wes breed specifically for hot weather and to adapt to crazy climates it’s not a recognized (ARBA) breed so I don’t have much information on it but it may be worth looking into.
Cash's kits have amazing markings, no wonder your thinking for selling them all for the 4h, I think thats a great move. Do any of your kids do 4h or are they not interested?
From another yt meatrabbit breeder i got the impression that ability to hide is pretty essential in rabbits. Could that be why Scarlet is squashing babies? Would there be room for a second hiding place in the hutch to test that maybe? Raised one batch of quail for meat (and learning to slaughter), tastes just fine, but the itty bitty fiddly bones make for frustrating eating. I learned a lot from them, but won't raise them again.
Usually the hutch is secure feeling enough, especially when they have only known that, but it could be. She never hangs out in the box when there isn't a litter in there. I almost think she's overly protective, and ends up squishing them accidently.
I have been raising New Zealands for most my life and I have whites, a few reds, black, black and white and blue and white brokens. Hubster and I live in Laclede, ID so if you would like to contact us would be happy to elaborate. 💚🌻
Do you know if it would be hard to do 4-H with a rex because they are a bit bigger? I am thinking I want to get a mini rex since I have heard that they have great personalities and coats just like the standards, but are, of course mini. Do you know anything about the mini rex breed? Also yet another great, informative video!
Hi there, I'm quite new to your channel. Just out of curiosity, how do you choose your breeding rabbit and what do you do with it when they retire from breeding? And thanks for sharing the knowledgeable content!
Welcome, I choose based on the size and litter size of the die, or sometimes I just find one extra sweet or pretty. Retired breeders are always given pet homes.
Great videos. A few questions - for 4-H, do you need a pedigree for them, or a way to assure the buyer that they are purebred? When I buy a doe or buck from Craigslist, I feel like I can't be 100% sure that the rabbit really is whatever breed the ad listed, so I would have a hard time promising someone that the kits were 100% pure. Also, do you double up any of your (nonlactating) breeding rabbits, or do they always have their own cages?
We keep all breeders separated, but you can double up if hutches are large enough. 4H does not require a pedigree, but the kids are pretty good at knowing what to look for with purebred rabbits. Rex are easier, because of the curly whiskers, and the plush coat. If you mix them you loose those traits.
So we are new to this, working on finishing up our hutches and I think I have watched all of your videos. I greatly appreciate your videos and how explanatory you are. I have a question. We live in Florida and everyone who has rabbits here says they need go be processed at 8 weeks and that makes it not worth raising for meat. However, I see you process much later than that. How did you decided when to process and is it different from breed to breed?
It varies from breed to breed. A larger breed NZ or a meat cross may be ready more around 10 weeks, but you won't get good hide quality at that age. We process at 15 weeks so we get a good amount of meat, and nice hides. Why would anything after 8 weeks not be worth it to them? If you can raise your growouts on pasture they are very cost effective, even at 15 weeks. We are at 11 weeks now, and have spent $2 per rabbit to get them to this point.
@@GoodSimpleLiving This is why I was seeking counsel from someone who knows. :) As I am sure you can imagine, asking around here we are getting much flack about meat rabbits in general, and everyone has their opinions. We have been doing a lot of research and agree with your points about "why meat rabbits". Everyone has said after 8 weeks the meat is too tough to eat. I see that you do 15 weeks so, this is why I was asking. I trust that you know what you are doing over the folks who do not raise rabbits, but have their ways. Lol
I live in Southern California and it seems hard to get good rabbit from our butchers. Any independent breeders I can access to buy good meat? We used to raise rabbits when my old world grandma would butcher them for the family, but mom doesn't have the stomach to clean them. We do love our Rabbit Cacciatore, so I would like to surprise mom with a good, clean rabbit. Any ideas?

Good video. Thanks
Retirement for Cindy Harper!! 🎉 I am happy for her.
Yeah she is going to have 1 last litter, and be done. Guiness finally talked her into 1 fall off, so we'll save a doe from her, and find her a nice pet home.
@@GoodSimpleLiving I thought your daugther was going to keep her as a pet. But anyway... Cindy was a good worker 👏👏👏 That's a wonderful decision !
She would love to, but we just don't have the hutch space. I gave her the choice to keep Cindy as a non breeder or pick one of her daughters, and have a breeder. She decided she wanted to keep a breeder, because Kirra loves them to have kits. She's a farm girl so she understands those tough choices.
amazing, sweet and cute bunny 💕😍😍
That they are!
Great video! I’m learning a ton from you for our rabbits we will be raising next year.
Awesome, I'm so glad!
Thank you for mentioning your new Zealand doe, I was just looking to the follow up videos lol
Yeah, she didn't work out
NZ can be cranky with breeding. I had to keep my does next to the buck for a few days before trying. But they are also tasty so either way is a win. :)
Yeah she was not having it. My Rex are generally pretty easy so I am just going to stick with that until we make our move, and get more hutches setup.
Frightened now. Our breeding stock arrives in a matter of days! 😳😳😳
@@Soggybottomnz no, it'll be great. I just got a dud.

Fall is my favorite time of year, we got 3 days 😱.
Thank you, I hope you love it, and Happy birthday!! I hear it's going to be a long winter for all!
That is too funny. We once spent a night sleeping on the floor at my brothers house the day after one of his snakes got out and he hadn't found it yet...at least he warned us! Good times!

Stay tuned, coming soon!
I love bunnies to they are so cute
They really are cute.
Good work buddy!!! Keep it up!!:)
He's my handsome little farm boy.
Great job guys! One thing i will suggest is that you could hold the NZ doe in the cage so she can't bite or move and let the buck breed her. Just grab her scruff and put her in the center of the cage. That sure is disappointing.😔 Glad to see the quail doing good!😉
That NZ is not in a nice mood. She lunges, and runs, and just isn't really a doe I want to keep. I'm over her, I'll probably just process her out.
That's kind of rapey. If a doe doesn't want to breed she just needs to be removed from the program.
@@JJusdreiin No it's not
@@lauryn_21420 Holding an animal down and forcing it to breed when it has shown avid signs it does not want to isn't rapey?

None of these are going to end up in the pot...🤣🤣😂😂. They are ubber cute. I have to put my feeders on the outside so my daughter can help. It's hard to sell buns around here.
We do pretty well selling breeders around here, but we have a major metro area right by us. The Rex sell well due to all the colors.

Yeah the NZ seem to have a different temperament for sure. I think maybe I will try a different large meat breed. Maybe I'll do Silver Fox.

Your tractor bunnies are gorgeous. What kind are they?
Thank you, they are Rex. that color is black tort
The chance of a double pregnancy is rare, you should be just fine going for a second fall off the next day.
what type/kind of rabbits are those at 8:45? Nice color!

@@GoodSimpleLiving Thanks so much! I'll take a look at that program.

Will they eat all you can give or do they self regulate their food intake?
They are grazers, and will eat all day long. The hay is fine, but they will get fat with unlimited pellet.
Good Simple Living my fault I thought these were the mini’s haha I used to own standard Rex’s and it’s pretty common.

Hi there, thank you! No we don't worry about it. We keep a close eye on the cats, and haven't had any issues.
@@GoodSimpleLiving Good to know, thank you so much for answering!
Newzeland rabbit Spin her around lift her back end up some when buck mounts. This will change her additude sometimes if she takes. Some females after this become good mothers. Also take female to the males cage. Females get protective of there nesting areas.
Turns out we were lied to, and she wasn't young at all. Looks as though she was an old doe they were just trying to get rid of.
Great video I’m currently having the same problem with one of my New Zealand does and unfortunately I’m coming to the same conclusion as you!

Do you ever notice any digestive issues from the feed having wheat and soy products?
We try to avoid both
Good Simple Living Do you have an inexpensive brand you’ve found without?
They are beautiful I want them all lol
The Rex are my favorite.
They are my favorite too!
Hey ive got a question about the bunnies after you ween them off the Doe... Can you put the fryers all in one larger cage together until they reach weight??? I'll have 3 doe's and I was wondering if there were any issues with the babies being in 1 large cage together. They would also be very close in age
That is what we do. We move weaned kits to lawn tractors, and raise them together on pasture.
Awesome! Even from different litters? Could all the kits from 3 liters pasture together if they've got the room? Up to maybe 21 rabbits?
Don't tractor them where wild animals eat like in a forest.
hi about those tracktor rabbits are they cinnamon in breed?
We raise rex

Do you know if it would be hard to do 4-H with a rex because they are a bit bigger? I am thinking I want to get a mini rex since I have heard that they have great personalities and coats just like the standards, but are, of course mini. Do you know anything about the mini rex breed? Also yet another great, informative video!
I hear they are the same only prone to peanuts, and just smaller. The Rex that we have sold have done well at fair.
What I have done with a doe like that is to put her with the buck but HOLD her for breeding
I'm sad I know it's the circle of life but it makes me sad still is there nothing that will not make me sad
I mean, providing clean safe food for your family should make you not sad. Feeding my kids tainted meats makes me sad.

@@GoodSimpleLiving thank you
So we are new to this, working on finishing up our hutches and I think I have watched all of your videos.
Lol
That's crazy! They aren't meat birds! They are still very young and tender at 15 weeks.
@@GoodSimpleLiving Thank you! I do enjoy the videos. They are very helpful!
