Been looking forward to this review. After finishing Definitive Edition it has become one of my favourite RPGs all together and I agree all the characters are hot.
I just wanted to point out the tiniest detail and *spoilers* to the point of the village on the fallen arm with the new face expressions you can see dunban's lower lip tremble when he sees fiora in the machina village for the first time, I just noticed today and it's a pretty tiny detail, but it's a good one, he's trying to hold his emotions and trying not to cry in front of everyone and as fiora said he's a big softy but doesn't show it to anybody else again pretty tiny detail but one I loved to realize existed and that shows how much better the face expressions are in the DE

I got XBDE with no previous games played in this series (including original XB), and when I was still loading up the title screen I went "wow this music is GORGEOUS-- oh, Zaffre likes this game, of course the music is gonna be great" and I was not disappointed
Afraid I have to correct you there at the very beginning. Nintendo of Europe actually decided to localise those three games for the PAL market outside of any influence made by Project Rainfall (which is why there are quite a few other Japan and PAL only games released around 2009-10 that didn't make it to the USA, as game sales were dropping in NTSC territories while still going fairly strong in European countries and the UK/Australia). This is why all 3 of those RPGs hired UK voice actors for the English dub. What that allowed for of course is for Project Rainfall to convince Nintendo of America to use those European localisations for an NTSC release :)
Even though I wouldn't say that the Xeno series is my favorite franchise anymore (that honor goes to a tie between Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Legend of Heroes), I'm still grateful that this was the one that introduced me to console JRPGs.
Something to correct you on. This game wasn’t motion captured. All the animation during cutscenes are pre rendered. It wasn’t until Xenobalde Chronicles X that they’d start using motion capture for the cutscenes.
Unless I spaced out, the one issue I have with this review is how you didn't mention Expert Mode. As someone who always felt limited in how much I'm allowed to do without losing the challenge in the original, and also since I'm the madman that went for 100% this time around (and did so, aside from a few very grindy achievements at the end), that feature came in SO handy to be able to do whatever I wanted without any worry whatsoever and it's a great QoL feature that I'm surprised you wouldn't mention (again, unless I spaced out, in which case my apologies). Other than that, great review, this is definitely somewhere in my favorite games of all time and it's always nice seeing someone talk in depth about it, especially someone who understands and shares the love I feel for it!
It's my favorite JRPG and I've really enjoyed beating every version The guality of life improvements in DE are really appreciated, I actually cared about the sidequests this time around
Binged your reviews of Symphonia, Vesperia, and now Xenoblade 1 - all games I thought were very good. Hard agree with Xenoblade's absolutely beautiful OST and great story. The first time I loaded this game, I stayed on the title screen listening to the music until the piece looped. I'll be watching your review of Xeno 2 next (and wow, a whole hour compared to the 20-30 min videos I've watched from you so far, WHEW). Both games are strong titles (but for me, DE ekes out over 2).
I wasnt planning on getting definitive because well when the trailer hit I didnt like the graphics it showed. Later I caved in and bought it and I dont regret it. Playing through the world on the switch was an amazing feeling seeing the growth of the characters was amazing. When I finally beat it I felt empty because well the game was amazing and the Wii port was part of my childhood. Anyways lets just say Xenoblade took Persona 3 down a few notches.

Watching your video made me remember of one thing I hated about the game: NPCs that change location depending on the time. It was a headache tracking them down... -_-
It’s strange I never got any lag in future connected so it’s surprising to hear that there is some. Overall I absolutely love Xenoblade DE so much so that it’s in my top 5 games. My biggest problem is that after Xenoblade 2 the combat felt so slow and very luck based in base game as chain attacks are an important part of the system that just felt much too luck based in my opinion. Besides that though it’s an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish that everyone should experience.
My only sorta thing I'll say about the soundtrack is while yes the soundtrack is so much better than in the Wii version. Engage The Enemy gives me chills so much more than the original. I have a problem with Mechanical Rhythm. The Wii version sounds so rough and feels like it's like a old machine. The sorta uhh fuzziness to it makes to rock so much and represents the world so accurately imo. But in the remaster its a lot more clear and it feels so wrong to me. Otherwise yes I agree that the entire soundtrack is fantastic

Excellent stuff! I bought XC when it first came to the States, and only found time to finish it last year, right before the Definitive Edition was announced. So I haven’t played XCDE and got a lot out of watching you talk about it. Especially interesting to hear about the new campaign, since I don’t think I’ll be able to justify replaying this 100 hour RPG anytime soon.
i can understand why you wouldn't want to jump right into this immediately then haha. it's a great game but a huge time-sink. if anything, if this is for a good price by some miracle you can just play it for the epilogue if anything since you can hop right into that without playing the main campaign!

I think Xenoblade is a great game, but I have to disagree about the plot. It started very strong but made many questionable choices that I feel hindered the story. I can forgive many of them, but quite a few were so egregious that I felt like just taking a break from the story. I'm not gonna list any for spoiler reasons but there are 3 prime examples that stick out to me. The characters are great and while the combat takes some getting used to, it's certainly enjoyable when you get a fair number of artes unlocked. I wish they handled side quests better. I have a bad habit of trying to 100% games, so the side quests also bogged me down. Especially the time sensitive ones. Definitely a worthy play, but sadly nit as enjoyable as all the hype was suggesting to me, but that's just me. If you love the game, all the power to you.
Regarding the visuals the Wii version certainly makes itself very distinctive with its art style, but the definitive edition is certainly the better looking with its graphics. I just wish the definitive edition used more of the original art style as opposed to a mixture between it and XC2's
Ok, I know I’m in the minority here, but I have to say, I really am not a big fan of Xenoblade Chronicles 1. I have a complicated relationship with those games, as a European, the first Xenoblade was released earlier in my country and was already receiving multiple positive reviews. As a fan of JRPGs and a Wii owner, I pre-ordered the game and played it the first day of release. To say that I was eventually disappointed is kind of an understatement. As you said in the review, the OG version of the game was kinda ugly, and despite the competent art direction I never manage to look past that. Thankfully, the character modeling was improved in the definitive edition, but, at least to me, the “definitive” version of the environments is really lackluster. To be fair I did try to give the game a chance, as many reviews called the game “perfect” or “having the best story ever written in a video game” so I kept playing Xenoblade at the time. And it wasn’t a very good idea. I found the story very weak, everything is pretty evident as soon as the game starts. You can see the ending, plot twists, every major reveal as soon as the cutscene “loss” plays out. Regarding the cast of the game, I did not find any of the “real” or “relatable”. To me, pretty much every character was boring at best and annoying at worst. And once again, I know I am in the minority here, but every time I try to watch a review of the game and see the story or character section I never see any relatable info as to why everyone seems to love this cast. I feel kind of lost, to be honest. The gameplay was also very uninteresting to me, as the game never really allows you to have dynamic fights or mix it’s formula a bit. It’s mainly an MMO battle system without a proper kit for most of the characters. Most of the fun comes from trying to break the game’s rules by creating synergies and… I am sorry but I find this very disconnected from the rest of the game. The landscapes are huge, the cut scenes are mostly action-packed and dynamic when they are displaying a battle… Then in combat, the characters are sliding on the ground all over the place, perform lackluster animations and say the ½ line that they have for the arte you are spamming. And I’m not even taking into account that during my playthrough, just spamming artes was eventually enough to make my way to the final boss. Overall I really disliked the game, but as everyone seems to enjoy it in the fandoms I follow, I tried to play it multiple times. I’ve played the game up to the final battle only once. But the first time, it took me 2 tries up until the Prison Tower before I gave up, bored by the story and gameplay. I even tried the Definitive edition on release, trying to see if I was simply blind to the qualities of the game back then and… I never could bring myself to pass the Gaur plains. Look, if everyone likes the game, it’s fine. More power to you. However, I have to say, the game isn’t “perfect” by any means. I simply want to clarify that praising it to the point of calling it a “must play” or a “perfect game” only tore down my appreciation for the first Xenoblade, definitive or not. The worst part is that I feel like I have to be sorry for not liking the game, everytime I bring this up I get bashed, rejected, and told to just “play the game better” or “I do not understand the genius of the game”. Each time I say something like “well I did not quite like the story, I feel it was kinda obvious to foresee from the very beginning” I feel like I have to apologize for it as everyone calls me either a liar/boomer or something like that. So please, try to understand at least this: There are people, at least one guy, that did try the game, multiple times, even beat the final boss, and still found the experience mediocre at best.
Have to say, the soundtrack of the game is definitely a masterpiece, I'll give it that. And to my opinion, gameplay (and story) only improved in Xenoblade X and Xenoblade 2, sooo... At least there's that. ^^'
This whole game, while not perfect, is really damn close to it at times. It's one of those experiences where all the parts just slot together and it just works, start to finish. The game's middle third in particular, from Satorl Marsh to when you arrive on the Mechonis, is just an unbroken string of home run after home run of almost flawless areas and story beats. I think after that it loses a bit of momentum (though the plot certainly picks up again at the very end), but that's just a downgrade from basically perfect to merely very, very good
Just finished the game and find it so bad. I'm so sad that I didn't relate with all the fans.. Characters are so plain (and the antagonits ridiculous, battle system is the most boring I've ever played. The story is better but still kind of meh. The only good point for me is the idea of walking on a big colossus. The landscape is great. And that's all...
@@toooydoeur I disagree. I find a lot of the characters in 2 very annoying and not relatable. X has a lot of great little character moments in it that are pretty fantastic. I thing the combat is too different to compare but they're both pretty good.

Xenoblade might be my favorite JRPG series besides Golden Sun and Dragon Quest.

The worst part is that I feel like I have to be sorry for not liking the game, everytime I bring this up I get bashed, rejected, and told to just “play the game better” or “I do not understand the genius of the game”. Each time I say something like “well I did not quite like the story, I feel it was kinda obvious to foresee from the very beginning” I feel like I have to apologize for it as everyone calls me either a liar/boomer or something like that. So please, try to understand at least this: There are people, at least one guy, that did try the game, multiple times, even beat the final boss, and still found the experience mediocre at best.
Have to say, the soundtrack of the game is definitely a masterpiece, I'll give it that. And to my opinion, gameplay (and story) only improved in Xenoblade X and Xenoblade 2, sooo... At least there's that. ^^'

This whole game, while not perfect, is really damn close to it at times. It's one of those experiences where all the parts just slot together and it just works, start to finish. The game's middle third in particular, from Satorl Marsh to when you arrive on the Mechonis, is just an unbroken string of home run after home run of almost flawless areas and story beats. I think after that it loses a bit of momentum (though the plot certainly picks up again at the very end), but that's just a downgrade from basically perfect to merely very, very good

Just finished the game and find it so bad. I'm so sad that I didn't relate with all the fans..
Characters are so plain (and the antagonits ridiculous, battle system is the most boring I've ever played.
The story is better but still kind of meh.
The only good point for me is the idea of walking on a big colossus. The landscape is great.
And that's all...
Xenoblade X is better than xenoblade 2. Fight me

@@Sky-ur1wk yes although thinking back to it, while 2 has a lot of faults, the good stuff it does have is better than X
@@toooydoeur I disagree. I find a lot of the characters in 2 very annoying and not relatable. X has a lot of great little character moments in it that are pretty fantastic. I thing the combat is too different to compare but they're both pretty good.
@@Sky-ur1wk I think 2 def has better combat and better music and a great world but the dialogue and characters aren't great. But I also didn't like the story or characters in X either
