I met an old American once. He told me that he used to be an English teacher in South Korea. There was a student in his class who was a grammar expert, knew the grammar rules even better than the teacher.. but couldn’t have spoken a single sentence in English. Although the student knew all the English grammar rules, he couldn’t have communicated in English at all.

A former student of mine from China told me that they look at the algorithms to prepare them for the possible questions. Yes, they may be able to answer the questions or obtain high scores. Yet, and this is the big yet, they still have difficulty communicating in the real world. Thank you Christian for this insight. We need to see beyond the exams as a measure of language ability or proficiency. It is also not a level playing field. For developing countries, the cost of the exam is staggering. Additionally, preparing for the exams is likewise costly. All in all, that would be about two to three months' worth of salary. Higher-level exams are also not available in most developing countries. Only selected developing countries offer the CAE.

Partly thanks to you, I discovered that studying English was more than going to boring classes and doing boring texts. Now I focus on speaking the language and everything is much more fun, and I speak the language better and more confidently.

You can find the same situation in traditional school. Students are true professionals in preparing tests and exams but they don't have the ability to solve small problems in their professional lives. In addition to the above, COMMUNICATION is a subject that schools should integrate into their training offer. Thanks Christian

    For me as english learner..
Difficult test like that just makes me frustated. In my opinion when two people make conversation in english and they understand each other...they are well known in english...they are good👍🤗
Because for me...learn english is for long life..everyday we learn a new word , everyday we learn how to pronounce , how to write and how to spell...so difficult test just waste the time 😧😢and money.
Learn from mr.Cristian through cangoru english is the best way to know and understand english more deeply

When did we forget that language is for communication? Was it when people turned it into a subject or discipline? It is so human, so deep, so rooted so as to turn it into an object. We've got to go to the basics in all aspects of life :) Language commodified at such a scale is truly a crime :))
    Great video, Christian.

Dear Christian, I couldn't agree more with you!! Just my two cents. The latest craze - at least in my homeland - is the following: the corresponding diplomas or certificates are only valid for five years. Thus, after that time, you have to take once again the very same exam you already passed, let alone a higher one. It's just sheer greed, undoubtedly. 🥵
Besides that, those exams happen to be boring to death. The topics they deal with are almost never interesting or motivating, what augments the stress even more. Luv ur vids! Thanks a bunch for sharing. Regards.

WHAAAA. There I thought as a kid that there was something wrong with me when I had encountered a similar "Jar Situation". I thought there was a human marking these tests, but again imagine how likely it is to become so rigid once you are exhausted by a 1000 of these. Thanks for the relief)).
Hopefully all these LLMs like chatGPT can solve that problem. They seem smart enough to allow for such small variation, which could mean a lot if were an about to be student. Anybody agrees?
Also this olympiad made me think of aptitude test I had to take. Which is basically an abstract, spacia logic and an IQ test. I also did not like it, because I felt there is a cheat to it. Now looking at how people are able to hone a skill of grammar problems in an unknown language, makes me think that exactly the same can be done with the IQ test. It's a matter of how quick you find answers to these abstract pictures. Sorry my brain does not compute these, YET. But it does not mean it cant compute a physics problem well enough (I even got an award in my school for it). I just think university are ought to be a upfront to it. Just state "We need hard working students" literraly and not "this test checks if your brain is good enough". Uh, how is this claim supported and validated?
So yeah, some motivation talk for a random reader of this comment, never let an exam ruin your self esteem. Put enough effort and time at it and you will get it!
