Sir David Attenborough has done so much to showcase the beauty and wonder of nature and it's hard to believe that someone watch an Attenborough documentary without feeling a tremendous reverence for life on this planet. The killing and destruction of wildlife contrasts brutally against the beauty of life, appearing completely abhorrent and immoral to thinking, feeling human beings. Thank you Phillip Wollen for awarding Sir David Attenborough the Winsome Constance Kindness Medal for 2012.
Sir David has done more to protect the forests, oceans, and wildlife than most people alive. Philip Wollen does not "kiss anyone's ass". He is a STRICT vegan. He raised the tough livestock question with Sir David who said clearly "I agree". If the vegan community dealt exclusively only with vegans the audience would be very small indeed! Remember it's a graduated scale, a continuum, from carnivores to strict vegans, shades of gray along the scale. Philip Wollen's strategy is logical and wise.
I agree. What is so hard to get? I speak as an ex-meat eater. I don't know what in the world make me think it was OK at the time. Of course, I am ashamed today. You are correct. It is not rocket science. I know that once the penny drops (as it has for you and me) then there is no looking back. In one talk, Philip Wollen said something along these lines "we have got to persuade or enlighten the thought leaders, and make them our allies. We need to be a broad church and politely welcome everyone".
This is a great conversation, I like the more positive David then the doom and gloom David. He is great in creating awareness. Awareness may come in many ways and may not mean that you watch this and jump up to hug the nearest tree but it could mean you might think twice at throwing a bottle out the window of your car or taking a 20min shower. How ever which way you do it the outcome will be good...I am glad I watched this.
Yes, but the question not being asked that we all, who have permanently discarded our blinders and stopped playing peek-a-boo on the subject, want to know is why haven't these people aligned their values with their actions? It is driving my crazy as to "what is so hard to get?"
How morally superior of you. It really is not hypocritical. He's too educated to know it's flaws and it's own hypocrisies. Low meat diet yes. Veganism = misinformed ideology
Darren Thomas: Checkout this link from the biggest organization on nutrition in the world (+100.000 certified nutritionists and dietists) after reviewing decades of collected data and peer reviewed studies: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27886704 Here is a quote: "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. "
I had checked that website beforehand, was wondering whether he had changed. In any case, he may be doing some active protection for our habitat's as opposed to just making the switch (which is more like a vote). Hypocritical or not, he probably is doing quite a bit more than the average vegan. I agree though, it is sad to see him not a vegan, given his life's work.

I agree. What will the children think when there is nothing. Cleveland, Ohio had a burning river. Moral issues are there any left?
Stuart - you make a good observation!

i'm interested to know why D.A. isn't a vegetarian!
Unhealthy and not in our nature. He has a low meat diet.
