New subscriber here. Great tips. The worst cruise is subjective. Some ports that we love others hate and vice versa. We do love Belize but I know others don't. This is great information. Thank you so much for sharing.
You should specify that these are the 5 worst Caribbean ports. Because I did a Pacific Mexican cruise last year and all 5 of these ports you mentioned (I've been to them all) were paradise compared to Ensenada, Mexico. That is hands down the dirtiest, unsafest (feeling), hole I've ever been to. It was gross. We ALL got off the ship because our two previous ports, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas we weren't able to get off due to a hurricane. It was gross. The top 5 worst you put here, we liked them all. We had zero problems.
Ensenada doesn’t bother me. I’ve been several times. Mazatlan on the other hand was bad. I was there on a land vacation decades ago and it was ok, but our Mexican riviera cruise there was horrible. The port is an industrial port and you have to take a shuttle to town. Definitely a day to stay on the ship.
Not sure where you went. I’ve been there at least 12 times and it’s way better than Cabo Way more to do than Cabo . The food is great. The people are nice most speak English and there is some amazing things to do there. Yes there’s no beach right there. That’s for sure.
Yeah Ensenada was a let down. I had an excursion to La Bufadora, which was nice but took us so long to get there due to the heavy holiday traffic. At least I knew what I was getting myself into as they did warn us ahead of our port day that it would be crowded. I'm still thankful I got off the ship nevertheless.
@@madchatteress try next time the lobster lunch or the wine tasting at Celo with the free bottle of wine, or the margarita madness. Those are the best. There is great food in town if you look. Just got back yesterday and had it again. Done most of the tours at least once. No ATV or horseback but the rest.
We moved to Merida, Mexico about three years ago. On our first visit, we took a day trip to Progresso. Had a great meal on the beach and great service. Things were pretty dingy. A lot has happened in three years. The Malecon has been completely redone. Vert nice. Lots of new restaurants and generally much nicer. We live in Centro in Merida and we see a lot more tourists these days. I would recommend an excursion with cenotes, Merida and perhaps Isamal. Or try Crabster or Casa del Pastel. Great food and if you are eating at the restaurant you can sit on the beach under a palapa or an umbrella and be waited on. Have to get away from the pier.
Merida is beautiful, very nice quality restaurants and lively expansive market. Cenotes are amazing-visit a variety from small undeveloped underground to larger, open to sky with amenities. And the historical ruins-stunning!
Me too. Next time I'm there, I'm not getting off. The last time this drunk (at 11 am) wanted me to buy drugs and he hung on me and I could smell whiskey.
If you to Belize with Norwegian, the port is an island. Belize left a much better first impression on me, probably because we docked on that island and then went across for our excursion. We went deep into Belize and did some river tubing. It was great. Same for Honduras. Norwegian seems to dock at a different port and it is picturesque and lovely. I had one of my favorite excursions there - jungle hiking. I'd advise taking excursions that get you out into nature. Manmade structures and towns might disappoint, but nature won't!
Someone needs to send this video to all the major cruise companies. All five ports are not worth getting off the boat other than to stretch your legs. AKA gym and spa day on the boat.
I'm not sure why only Caribbean/Bahamian ports are mentioned. Like another viewer/reader, I've been on dozens of cruises, and my least favorite port is Santorini. You either have to wait 1-2+ hours for the slow gondola to town, or walk up interminable, stinky, donkey-turd covered cobblestones to the top. At every turn, I could hear or see people slipping and falling into those slippery, turd-covered steps. If those are my only choices when my next cruise in the area stops there, I'll stay onboard. Trying to get to Santorini town is getting caught between Scylla an Charybdis.
Not to mention how overcrowded it is (especially with FIVE ships in port). I did Santorini on two sailings and returned back to ship hours before I intended to as I couldn't take the over crowdedness of Fira. The first time, I waited an hour to board that gondola but lucked out on the second time with a 15 min wait. If anyone MUST visit Santorini, go in off season and stay on the island vs cruising.
We have been to most of these ports. We LOVE Belize. We went swimming with sharks and snorkeling…gorgeous. We loved Jamaica. We were hassled but we literally just said No and they understood. We went to a resort for a day and it was awesome. Roatan is run down but we went kayaking and a monkey took selfies with my phone. We loved it there. Can’t wait to go back. We love cruising 😍
I think the biggest issue with Nassau is the sheer amount of times you end up there. If you decide to frequent cruise, you'll probably be in Nassau in most iteneraries. You can only do so many excursions before you've done all of them 😂
Ironically, I've been on 8 cruises and have 1 cruise planned before I do Utopia to Nassau/Perfect Day, which would be my first time sailing to Bahamas.
I can appreciate that stopping in the Bahamas saves much on fuel costs BUT there are thousands of islands further south to visit. Perhaps more sea days!
My kids and I just got back from a cruise that stopped at Nassau. We got asked a few times to come in and look at stuff in the new port. Also if my daughter wanted her hair braided. No one was pushy, but they weren't afraid to ask as we walked by.
I appreciate this video as I'm literally doing three of these ports in 2025. I decided to book an excursion in Nassau and Belize whereas Costa Maya, I will just explore the port area (especially the Aviary). As these ports are all new to me, I hope I will have a good experience.
What about Santorini? You get dropped off at the bottom of a cliff where the options are to pay for the gondola that holds about 20 of 500 people waiting, walk up the hundreds of donkey poo covered steps (no exaggeration), or pay to ride the donkeys up the donkey poo covered steps! Then when you get to the top there is nothing to do. I have been on many cruises and Santorini was by far the biggest disappointment.
You have got to be kidding me. Santorini has to be one of the top 5 most beautiful places in the world, evidenced by the countless breathtaking photos taken from the towns above in almost every travel magazine.
@@MarcL1313 Yes, the pictures are beautiful but still a bad cruise port for the reasons listed in my original post. Also, I noticed you disputed none of the points that I presented in my comment.
@@MarcL1313 If you go during off season, you may have an opportunity to enjoy Santorini .... I've been TWICE via cruise ship (June) and most of my photos have zillions of tourists in them. Yes, it's beautiful but hard to enjoy the beauty when you are sharing the narrow walkways with zillions of other tourists. Plus, to get back to the ship, you need to stand in a long line in the town of Fira (1-3 hours at times) to board a gondola down the mountain then board a tender boat back to the ship. Both times I visited, I ended up going back to the ship HOURS before I planned given the huge volume of tourists and small walkways. Think Times Square crowds (especially with FIVE cruise ships in port)!
Thirty years ago, stopped in Ocho Rios. Went on a excursion that went to the falls. I have never seen a setup elsewhere that one person sells a ticket, and that ticket is exchanged for another ticket to be collected by a third person to gain entrance. The skimming and collusion that system is trying to prevent must be endemic. Our tour also went a a gardens on a hill in the area. A guide took us around and then at the end a security guard then questioned us to make sure the guide had not shook us down for tips. Finally the excursion stopped at a vendor area with very aggressive vendors. All of us returned to the van well before we needed to and were grateful to be away from the area. The other comment I remember from the van driver was "Jamaican beer = pi$$"
My first ever cruise was Cozumel and Progreso. We LOVED Progreso! We did an excursion that took us to an amazing Cenote with a 50 foot drop and a lunch at a restaurant built on a Cenote. I actually enjoyed my time in Progreso more than Cozumel!
I disagree about Nassau. Just visited in April and found that the port area, several blocks, has been fenced in, stores have been built replacing all the previous shacks and the vendors are not aggressive.
I just came off a cruise 9/24/24 and Costa Maya was our second port after Cozumel. We did the ruins and i got bit up by the fire ants and ankles still hurt a week later. So make sure you take off and check your feet and ankles. The final cruise port was Roatan, which was the best. The port beach was awesome, that is as far as i went this cruise. Prior cruises to Roatan, we always did excursions. But for those of you not planning an excursion, get off the ship and go to the "free" beach area there at the port.
The only port I've ever been that you didn't get harrassed to buy things is in Bermuda which is my favorite port not just for that reason but that you get multiple days there. Nassau is my least favorite. I had a good time renting a golf cart in Costa Maya and riding it around and then going to Krazy Lobster. Cozumel I was offered a guy's sister after I declined at least 6 other things he wanted to sell but wouldn't mind going back and exploring more there. I really love Amber Cove and do an excursion there every time. Grand Turk is alright also.
Hey Professor, I really feel like you, that I like to go explore past the cruise built port area, and has always gotten us some great experiences ! Might come back to bite me one day! 😂 Thanks for your you tube and tik tok content, you helped us have a great trip last month to the Bahamas! Keep up the great work!❤
I went to Belize & strolled around for a good 2 to 3 hours walking around exploring the city & ports & had little to no problem with anyone. I could've found something to do there but didn't because it was my first time there
You earned a subscription from me based on your excellent written description and your segment labeling of the video. I can't stand when people make a list like this and then don't indicate where the next item starts. Bonus points for not talking endlessly while saying absolutely nothing of value.
We go to the beaches mostly on port days. Freeport is one of my favorite ports. Yes, you have to get an excursion or Taxi, but the most beautiful beaches are not far away. I'll be there again in a few weeks. I look forward to Celebration Key and everyone learning about the real Freeport!
I’ve been to Nassau in sept. I never had that problem. Yes they did ask me to see their shop.I always present my self with a positive attitude. Don’t act like a timid individual. I always say no thank you and walk away.
The other side of the coin here. One of the nicest and prettiest ports I’ve been to is Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Lovely port and lovely little town. Very walkable.
Chalk up another Montezuma's Revenge case for Costa Maya. 100% agree that the terminal is nice, but as soon as you get outside you are in rural Mexico. Our local excursion was a mess, and the rain washed the sewage down the side streets to the beach. I think this is the one port I've been to where I would definitely book an excursion through the cruise line, or just visit the nice port pool before heading back to the ship. Good to know Belize is the same way.
Tabago was our worst. We're pretty sure our credit card was skimmed there. Very sketchy outside very underdeveloped port area. Belize we've had one our best snorkel excursions though...but sketchy downtown but saw a lot of police too. Agree about Costa Maya outside or port. Port usually one of the most crowded though if more than one ship in [like shoulder to shoulder around the shops]
@ProfMelissa my problem costa maya we went to a beach and had to stay in the water to avoid pesky vendors. Couldn't nap over and over wanting me get a massage or buy something
We enjoyed Progreso - maybe it was that authentic Mexican feel. We took a bus tour through town and learned about the history of the area. We ate at a little eatery downtown and had some amazing tacos. We've only been once, so I can understand running out of things to do there.
New to cruising life and the wife and I are loving so far. Freeport is one of our next trip (Grand Turk, HalfMoon, and Freeport) our plan is to stay on the ship that day and enjoy the pool with less of the crowd.
I've yet to do a "stay on the ship" day, but there are a few ports that if I get back to, I might be tempted to do that. It does seem nice to have the place to yourself, mostly... I just wish they didn't shut almost everything down on the ship during calls, though.
Maybe things have changed in 20 years, but we had to anchor outside the reef in Belize and were tendered in. We did a river boat cruise up to the ruins and then bussed back. The port area wasn't worth mentioning so that part is right. I never heard of Progresso. I have also NEVER heard of ANYWHERE in Mexico that didn't take dolar$ so that IS weird! And Cozumel doesn't have aggressive vendors? My wife wanted to buy a gold stingray charm. The price tag was kind of vague and we thought it was in USD (55.00) when the peso was an even 10:1; so $55. No, it was 5500 MXP so $550! Thy guy said it was solid gold. Well, we knew that. AND my Mom is a jeweler so we knew better. But he wouldn't back down. Other vendors practically tackled us if we even slowed down an inch per hour and took a glance into the store. I will NEVER set food on Cozumel EVER again!
Been to carribean earlier this year. But save for ocho rios and cozumel, most of the ports have only tourist junk, other tourist trap expensive restaurants. Everything is priced way way higher than prices in america. Mexico and jamaica know how to be more welcoming. There are lot of food options for cheap or at least reasonable. Most other ports didn't even have a 7 eleven. Pop was 2-3/can. Yikes.
I've been to Ochos Rios many years ago. I really enjoyed it, however I was 19 years old. There was explicit substances involved, but that's because I seeked it out. Nobody approached me about it. The place was beautiful, I'd recommend it. I've also been to Cozumel, but I don't remember much about it. Recently I've been planning a cruise to Belize and Costa Maya, and Cozumel. I'm considering this one because it leaves Tampa where I currently live. Based on this video, I may reconsider. My options are limited cruising out of Tampa. Perhaps I should just make the drive to Miami, where larger ships are.
I was in Nassau this past August. There were six ships in port that day and the island seemed to be overrun with tourists with long lines for everything in the tourist area. I really did NOT enjoy my day there.
@@ProfMelissa it seems like everyday there are 4-6 ships in port and with these mega ships carrying 5k-7k people each I don’t think it would be much different if I went back.
Agree with Freeport, but Nassau in 2017 was a lovely walk around. We found a fun outside bar but not rambunctious. Our bartender was great. First "taxi" on a passenger bicycle. Still don't know how he did it with me and my friend up and around some elevated streets 😅
I agree with Belize. We had a great excursion doing a sky bridge and cave tubing adventure but the run down port, especially coupled with the fact it’s a tender port, made me go straight to my excursion and then straight back to the ship when we were done.
What I like about Nassau is the last time I was there at least every other store was a liquor store and they liberally give away free samples but just about everything so you just go from liquor store to liquor store and get wasted yeah I might be that guy
Just saw Costa Maya will be upgraded for Rioal Caribbean. RCCL is making another Perfect Day in Costa Maya. The port will still be for all cruise lines, though RCCL cruise lines will have something to do there.
I would rather venture into all five ports you mentioned than PORT CANAVERAL. PORT CANAVERAL is nothing but a big cargo unloading port and there is nothing appealing within walking distance. At least with the five ports you mentioned, there are things you can do or visit to pass away the time while the cruise ship is basically in "inactive mode" (i.e. - shops & casino is closed, far less onboard activities taking place, etc.).
@@nascarmadman No, sailing from New York City (on Royal Caribbean, MSC, Carnival, Norwegian) towards Bahamas always entails a one day stop at this joke of a port for cruisers who wish to get off the ship to explore the local area without having to pay for any excursion.
I got back from a 5-day cruise to Costa Maya and Cozumel. So I did this cruise by myself and I personally didn't want to leave any port. I didn't want to lose track of time miss my ship and year dude so it was safer for me than a female but still didn't feel like risking going out too far from the port. If I had a buddy or group yeah I would love to explore more of the places we when to next I go with my brother. That being said because I just stay in ports acutely my day in Costa Maya is way better cozumel. I had a time in Costa Maya it was nice pretty and scenic. I wasn't harassed by anyone, I did the birds extinct which was really fun. I love the fact that I was over port and when walk on bridges to each extinct you get an awesome view. It was only $15. I went to where the dolphin place was and watched the play. This was free. I saw the sucker who paid $100 to get close to Dolphin. Personally, I don't need to get that close, and though I have a great view for free. I then went to one pool bar/restaurant to eat food next to the pool enjoyed myself eating food and what people having fun dancing in the pool because there was d.j. Playing. I was only playing to be there for 2 hours and get back and enjoy the ship when it was empty but I was there about 3 to 4 four. For me, it was a great stop. I do get if you cruise a lot and have been to Costa Maya a lot that may get old boring for a while for the first time and as a solo guy I enjoy it. On the other hand Cozumel I kinda wish I stayed on the ship. The port suck. To really enjoy Cozumel you have to leave the port area. Yeah, people tell their lot more stuff outside the port than Costa Maya but again it was my personal choice not to leave the Port area and I stand by that. The port wasn't pretty it was just all shops and was i harassed like crazy. Every shopkeep came up to me to try to get me into the shop for free shots everyone them. I don't do shots. But regardless I felt they targeted me more because I was solo. Walk behind a couple that left longer than me. Whenever passed the shop the keeper came to me not them. Maybe I didn't realize but maybe I have the word sucker on my forehead or they feel like because I was myself I would be easier to sell to. There this one guy who could get away with it would drag me into his shop he would. This really kills me. I did my best to rush to a restaurant I looked up before I ahead of the senior frog. It was okay I felt safer in there. But after I just went back to the ship. So I was only there less than an hour I was planning because I was at another port for a good time at least 3 hours. But that's okay i enjoy shipping. But the next I go to Cozumel I do want to go with a group or a buddy so I feel comfortable leaving the port area and Adventure out because yeah the port area of Cozumel is not worth staying in you do have to leave the port area.
We’ve been to Costa Maya, and will be there again soon. We love going to Maya Chan Beach-they provide comfortable transportation, and they restrict the number of guests so it’s not crowded. The food is good, the drinks are great, they have activities and massages on site that can’t be beat. Reservations are required, so plan ahead!
@@deepshotone they provide transportation outside of the port area-maybe a 2-3 block walk. It’s about a 15-20 minute ride. They bring you back to the port whenever you’re ready-they make sure to have you back in time to get to the ship.
Looking for something to do in Nassau? Take a walk to the Graycliff Hotel. Get a reservation and have some lunch. There’re also a lot of other experiences you can have at the hotel. But make sure you stop at the chocolatier. Get some brownies. They’re worth the walk all by themselves.
Freeport is fine, just have to take a taxi to one of the nice beaches. I'd recommend Deadmans reef for a great snorkeling experience in a really chill location (lots of sea turtles)
You’re perpetuating a stereotype that there is nothing to do in Costa Maya. Most don’t leave the port and shame on them. Get a taxi to downtown and hang out on the beach with a $30 massage. I always go to Krazy Lobster. It’s an inexpensive day on the beach. Been to that port more than 10 times and it’s one of the better ports - if you go downtown
Stereotypes develop for a reason and many commenters (and I agree) that there isn't a lot to do here compared to other options. That's not to say there's *nothing* to do in Costa Maya, and of course everyone has their preferences (even when they're unpopular opinions, like my love for Nassau), but it's just different strokes for different folks.
You are so right not many other ports you can just rent a golf cart and take off and drive it around to multiple places and Krazy Lobster and all the other shops right there near it are awesome. I will take Costa Maya over Cozumel or even Grand Turk
WOW!! Nassau was very nice to us. Christian music from many vendors and nice folks everywhere we went. NO pushy vendors bothered us even when we ventured into Starbucks for wifi...
Inside the terminal no one is pushy but the moment you leave it like to head to the diamonds international, it gets bad I was just there in October and I was cussed at for not buying any of their bracelets or trinkets.
Actually enjoyed Nassau last February. It was so windy that only our Carnival Legend braved the port, and therefore it was relatively empty, and the renovation keeps the vendors away
It is obvious your thought of ports is either beach or ruins, otherwise there is no port. Nothing could be farther from the truth. For those who don't beach, there are many other things to consider, which changes the picture immensely. Consider other aspects before whining about any port.
OK...I agree with Costa Maya on this list. I didn't like it at all. The port was way too small and with no beach nearby, limited things to do in the port itself and lack of airflow through the terminal, it got WAY too hot and it was just very over crowded with 2 ships at first and then expanded to 3 a bit later on. I actually loved Belize. The port I pulled into though was not at Belize City, but one of the islands and it was clean, massive pool and great environment. Didn't spend much time in the port though because the river tubing excursion was AWESOME and took most of the day!!!
The pineapple farm near Costa Maya was really good. By far the best pineapple I've ever had. Chacchoben was really cool, but if you aren't physically capable you can't see the best part and my ex was underwhelmed because she couldn't climb up to the good part. Freeport was disappointing, but touring the island one time is worthwhile, and it would be good for those who just want to lay on a beach and relax to take a land vacation. Nassau, you hit accurately. I would rather go on a land vacation there where there isn't a security checkpoint before I get back to my room, on a cruise I felt like I didn't have time to enjoy it, and a cruise isn't the same vibe as Nassau.
I enjoyed Costa Maya. We found no seaweed when we arrived in December. Roatan was disappointing. Once out of the actual port area, there is nothing worth seeing/doing within the town itself. The smell was terrible.
It's been a dozen years since we first visited Costa Maya, but we booked an off-ship excursion to Almaplena Beach Resort. The price included the taxi ride out there, which was about a 15-minute ride through the middle of nowhere. The resort itself was more than we could've asked for - a meal, drinks, and an extra cost for a massage on the beach. If you're willing to risk getting left behind, Almaplena was a nice choice.
So basically every hated cruise port is disliked because it isn't "just like the U.S." Just stay at home ppl if you don't want to see the world as it is! Cruise ports are not theme parks ...
The absolute WORST cruise port. Prof Melissa, is LaGuira ( Caracas, Venezuela). We docked and on the pier were military wirh oozies. Not to mention you could see the homeless encampments on the hillside. Did not feel safe or to do excursions!
Venice & Motril are the 2 worst for me. Larger ships need to stop pretending they go to Venice. A recent cruise anchored & failed to tell everyone that there would be a 2 hour (each way) tender ride to an industrial port & then a 30 min. walk into Venice. No thank you! We had already been there, thank goodness, but people were very disappointed. And Motril was a joke! We docked at an industrial port & they told us the shuttles were for those with physical limitations & that it was a 15-20 min walk into town. LIE!! We hauled butt full speed for an hour & 1/2 just to end up in a boring town with nothing to do. Everyone getting off the shuttles were jumping right back on. We jumped on with them & we were all furious!
I'm grateful I got to sail out of Venice before they banned cruise ships. My second Med cruise, I flew into Venice to have a day in Venice then took the cruise shuttle to Trieste. I couldn't imagine doing Venice as a port day given the restrictions. I'm grateful I got the photos I wanted as I don't plan on returning to Venice ... They really don't like tourists and the city is overrun with them. Not a fun vibe.
After watching the video and reading the comments, I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone likes different things. My advice would be, if you haven’t been to a particular port, then get off the ship and see it, unless it’s a safety concern. If you have been, then you can make an informed decision. There is nothing wrong with staying on the ship on a port day. They are some of the best days on the ships. Have fun and stay safe!!
Definitely! I feature both Atlantis and Baha Mar in my Nassau guidebook: profmelissa.gumroad.com/l/nassau (along with Margaritaville, British Colonial and Riu, which are also great).
Freeport and Costa Maya are my least fave. Haven’t been to Progreso (booked in Jan 2025) or Belize. Freeport was a sketchy port area that reminded me of a run down flea market. We did take a bus to an “all inclusive” beach, where nothing at all was actually included 😂 It was also packed so we didn’t stay long. Costa Maya port area is one of my least favorite places. We took a taxi to the Krazy Lobster and we did very much enjoy our time there, and haggling with the shopkeepers in that area. It felt authentic. Our taxi driver drove like a bat out of hell and scared us 😂 But the reason I’m not a fan is because the port vendors are incredibly aggressive (especially the skincare people) and the layout felt like a seashell - it took us FOREVER walking in circles to finally get out of that place to get a taxi. And it seemed like they designed it that way to 1. Pack more vendors in to sell more stuff, and 2. Keep people in the port area to spend money there instead of exploring on their own or through an outside vendor. Nassau was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had. We got off the ship there at 7:30am the morning after we hit our drink limit on the ship the night before. It was a little rough. We took a carriage ride (mostly cause we didn’t know what to do and were tired of walking) and the guide was great, pointing out different places and told us where NOT to venture. After that we started walking to Junkanoo beach because we didn’t have anything booked. We were hot, tired, hungover, and tired of walking. (Note: drinking coconut milk from a coconut in this situation will NOT cure a hangover, no matter what the nice Bahamian lady at the cart tells you. It’s very insta-worthy but this was before that was a thing.) About halfway down the sidewalk or sea wall to the beach, there was a man in a small boat who yelled that he did private fishing and snorkeling tours. We got him down to $300 for the two of us I think. In retrospect, this could have been a dangerous choice, but we clearly weren’t thinking there was anything suspect. It was 10 years ago too, so maybe we were more sheltered. Idk. Anyway, this guy was one of the nicest people, and as he took us out of the port area where we were allowed to fish and snorkel, he explained why we had to go elsewhere, and pointed out all the fancy beachfront mansions and told us what famous person owned each one. He took us past Atlantis. He had water and sodas and juice, fishing poles and bait, life vests and snorkel gear and towels. We didn’t need anything. He helped set the bait if we asked, we caught what he said were mostly junk fish but much different and more colorful than what we’re used to in Texas. The snorkeling was wonderful. He made sure to remind us of the time to get us back to port in time to board the ship. I still have his card, and we are planning a trip in 2025 with our kids. I’m 100% calling that guide! Had it not been for him, we probably wouldn’t like Nassau very much lol
I will never Cruise if the ship has Jamaica on its itinerary. My wife was grabbed and pulled away from me by a vendor. I get these people need to make a living but a no thank you then a stern no should not bring on being grabbed by a vendor. This vendor is very lucky she was a woman or I'd be in Jamaican jail.
It doesn’t have anything to do with cruises, it has everything by to do with who she is. I follow another travel channel (not cruising) that is hosted by a prof too. It’s just nice to know a little more about the host.
@@tammystreasures8766I respect your opinion. I have watched a multitude of cruise videos and this was the first one where the creator started with their occupation. Hi my name is Bob, I am a plumber.. It's right out of the book of Who Cares. If the person had any particular connection to the industry I could understand it.
@@burningblue1254 thank you for being so respectful. ❤️ I love when people don’t see eye to eye, but can still be respectful. You must be a great person.
I go to Nassau several times a year an have never had an issue, and I'm not particularly good about being proactive against pickpockets... But yeah, this can definitely happen here or at any cruise port or tourist destination. I do need to be more cautious in general.
@@drizle80 yes but a few of them are particularly notorious. I’ve seen multiple people with travel channels list Nassau (I know Rome and Barcelona were on the list too) of one of the worst places. A cruise channel I follow said he got off the ship at Nassau just kind of walking around wanting to see for himself how it was. A group of young men were next to him bragging how many people they were able to pickpocket that morning. Just brazen, out in the open, not caring if anyone heard them. No thanks. I don’t need that on vacation.
I have a cruise with both Nassau and Coco Cay .... Really debating on getting off at Nassau (would do an excursion or remain in port area). Never been to the Bahamas despite this being my 10th cruise. I've ALWAYS get off the ship when it's somewhere new but I'm nervous about aggressive vendors and drug dealers. Really need to do more research as safety is paramount for me. My friend suggested I stay on the ship (Utopia).
If you break this into Embarkation Ports, our #1 is Seattle. Absolutely horrid. Embarrassingly inefficient, zero order to things upon arrival and underwhelming signage. Not the best way to get your vacation started.
Disagree we loved renting a golf cart and visiting all around the island with some several gorgeous beaches, yummy local food and the Casino was fun. I want to go back. We also loved Rotan booked a private tour with Daniel Johnson and did Sloths, and Ziplines which was amazing. Beaches and snorkling amazing! People just need to venture out of Port areas and embrace others culture...why do people expect other Countries to be just like the US.. hint most aren't!
@@526renee We did like Rotan but two major issues we had in Bimini... keep in mind we have traveled the world and seen everything! The golf cart guys were pushy and scammers for the most part. Number two, the food quality/safety standards were terrible. If you look at the back of house of most of those restaurants you would never eat there. The beaches are beautiful but honestly...beautiful beaches are a dime a dozen. Beyond that the island had no real activities, no interesting shopping, no significant historical locations, it's really just a beach with a very poor island vibe. Not a "bad" place, just not someplace we'd say, hey... you should go there!
This should have read "The five worst cruise ports sailing from the US". There are plenty of terrible cruise ports around the world. Most ports I have sailed to are terrible, you need to get out of the area to appreciate them, as you say. I'm heading to a couple on this list in the next few months - have already booked the excursion for Belize city before I saw this vid!
Suva, Fiji, sketchy, dirty, followed when shopping in town. Dravuni was amazing but tourism will destroy it, being so small and tourists being so entitled, tromping over everything, sad it will be sullied. Agree with you about Costa Maya, got the same vibes. Most Mexico ports we have got the side eye, not my favorite cruise destination IMO.
I think there’s only one cruise port. Ships cruise out to sea overnight. They turn around, go back to the same port with a new sign and name change, all the same lousy shops, food, fake rum and cigar factories and overpriced jewelry stores. Enjoy the empty ship is the best move 😂
Did you embark the ship at Haifa or was it just a port of call? I did Haifa in summer 2023 and enjoyed the excursion I took despite the extreme temps. Got to see so many Biblical sites.
No surprise there. Last time there I didn't even leave the ship and my wife didn't then. Don't like beaches. Next time in Nassau will get off to see the new cruise port. Vendors can be very aggressive. Atlantis is overrated. Won't get off the ship in Jamaica. Other cruisers told me horror stories. At one time wanted to go to Belize. Would consider a shore excursion. Wouldn't go to Mexico. Even the Mexicans try to sneak into the U.S. They don't like it there. Wouldn't get off in Progresso either. I only speak English. Used to speak German better, but, actually lived in Germany. A relative had Cozumel cancelled as a port they were supposed to go to. If I feel unsafe anywhere I would not leave the ship. Used to like Freeport. Not anymore. It's a long ride to the Lucayan Marketplace. The public restrooms are not clean. Vendors have gotten more aggressive over the years. Have to know where you are in relation to a casino.
We went to Nassau and Junkanoo beach when cruising first opened up after COVID, the new port was under construction, there was only our ship at 50% capacity, I loved it! Bimini is the worst cruise port, in my opinion, it’s so dirty and boring. Second worst cruise port is ANYTHING in Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, that entire country just makes me feel uneasy every single time.
You left out San Juan. And some places I have been to many times. The ship is nearly empty, pools and hot tubs are available, spa offers discounts and no lines. I enjoy staying on the ship sometimes.
I am a little biased about Freeport. full disclosure, i have a condo on the island and i have many wonderful friends there. I agree that the port is not attractive, but if you venture out there are beautiful beaches west and east of the port. there is Port lucaya the main shopping area (the dolphin encounter leaves out of there). with Carnival's Celebration Key opening in 2025 Freeport might move to a favorite cruise port....
I did an independent excursion (Montego Bay Iberostar with Resort for a Day) with my young daughter (by way of Falmouth) a couple months ago and had no issues and never felt unsafe.
It’s better to take ship sponsored shore excursions in Jamaica for safety reasons. My advice for Nassau is to just either ignore the aggressive vendors or just say no thanks and move on.
I disagree. My husband and I just returned from Jamaica and we used an outside tour vendor and it was great. We were treated with respect and also had a private tour. No problems or issues at all.
New subscriber here. Great tips. The worst cruise is subjective. Some ports that we love others hate and vice versa. We do love Belize but I know others don't. This is great information. Thank you so much for sharing.
Oh for sure. Just like Nassau. I just don't get the hate b/c I LOVE it! It's crazy to me that so many people hate it.
Great tips, thank you!
Merida is beautiful, very nice quality restaurants and lively expansive market.
Cenotes are amazing-visit a variety from small undeveloped underground to larger, open to sky with amenities. And the historical ruins-stunning!
My husband hated Nassau so much, he doesn't want to leave the ship next time.
Me too. Next time I'm there, I'm not getting off. The last time this drunk (at 11 am) wanted me to buy drugs and he hung on me and I could smell whiskey.
No reason to get off. Nassau sucks…police don’t get involved w the aggressive vendors.
Now THAT would be a good experience. I do love almost all of the private islands!
100 percent agree. There is a safer dock to tender to but the cities mafia want you to take their cable car
Thanks for the info! I’ve always wanted to go to santorini, but maybe I won’t go on a cruise there.
You can only do so many excursions before you've done all of them 😂
So true. I'm so sick of Nassau.
Ironically, I've been on 8 cruises and have 1 cruise planned before I do Utopia to Nassau/Perfect Day, which would be my first time sailing to Bahamas.
Love Progresso, you’re absolutely right if you want to have your regular old gringo experience then go to Cozumel
This was my experience as well. I was just there, and no one was overly pushy or aggressive. I am surprised that port gets such a bad rap.
I’m shocked Ensenada is not on this list.
It was up there! If I did top 10, Ensenada would've been #6.
Ensenada is my #1 no go. I can't believe it's even a stop at all. Absolutely awful.
I did a very noce excursion there to a couple of pretty wineries. A nice lunch was included.
@@MarcL1313once you get up there. But the port is terrible.
@@cdtheque I doubt this person has visited Santorini via cruise ship
I'm a Nassau fan, too, especially with the port renovation.
I like the contrast of the positive and negative comparisons of the cruise ports; plus the suggestion of, try, try, try again! Thanks for sharing
😎🛳🛳
:)
Me and my wife did a bike tour in Nassau and we had a ball. Our tour guide took us all around the city . Wine and rum tasting was included.
Ahh, Bermuda is top 3 for me in terms of my cruising bucket list!
Hey Professor, I really feel like you, that I like to go explore past the cruise built port area, and has always gotten us some great experiences ! Might come back to bite me one day! 😂
Thanks for your you tube and tik tok content, you helped us have a great trip last month to the Bahamas! Keep up the great work!❤
Aw, this makes me happy to hear, thank you!
appreciate your pros and cons
One of my favorite ports was Costa Maya. We rented a golf cart and had a great time hitting all the beach clubs. We're definitely going back.
I'll be back in CM in a few weeks and might try this out.
@@ProfMelissa use the red shirt golf cart company!
@@ProfMelissa and I suggest you book it ahead of time
So if you say these are the worst cruise ports but you keep going back. Why not pick other destinations?
Worst cruise ports: Ensanada: its like stopping in Toledo Oh.
Mazatlan: too much cartel activity
Costa Maya: too crowded
I hear you! some ports can be a bit underwhelming or hectic.
Type A forever.
We go to the beaches mostly on port days. Freeport is one of my favorite ports. Yes, you have to get an excursion or Taxi, but the most beautiful beaches are not far away. I'll be there again in a few weeks. I look forward to Celebration Key and everyone learning about the real Freeport!
You can't go wrong with Bahamas beaches. Truly stunning!
Love your content
Thank you 💗
What would you do in Ensenada?
Oh yikes, that's certainly memorable.
I agree with this! :) But I do like how beautiful the water is in Costa Maya when it’s clear.
I love it too
@ProfMelissa my problem costa maya we went to a beach and had to stay in the water to avoid pesky vendors.
It definitely delivers on the authenticity, and I found that aspect really cool.
Yikes.
I spent $10 for a can of coke in France. When I got to Dallas I felt like $3 was a bargain 😂
I love Progresso for the reasons you didn’t like it. Had lots of fun with my daughter walking around.
We loved it as well. My wife and I walked around and had some good food. Never once felt unsafe and we ventured away from tourist areas.
I definitely appreciated the authenticity of it!
Have you tried the Margaritaville at Sea?
I was in Nassau this past August. There were six ships in port that day and the island seemed to be overrun with tourists with long lines for everything in the tourist area. I really did NOT enjoy my day there.
You HAVE to give it another go. It is one of my faves.
Those pedicab drivers must have calves of steel! Crazy how they can get up some of those hills.
I agree with Belize. We had a great excursion doing a sky bridge and cave tubing adventure but the run down port, especially coupled with the fact it’s a tender port, made me go straight to my excursion and then straight back to the ship when we were done.
I really wish I'd done cave tubing b/c that seems almost universally loved. If I get back there, it's definitely my #1.
I wonder how the new $42 Mexican port fees is going to affect cruising in Mexico and local tourism.
Nassau was boring to me ..the shops anyway .. every row had the same items
Copenhagen port is quite a ways away from the city and in an industrial area but I didn't find it bad. We loved Copenhagen.
I liked Copenhagen, too!
Key West and Nassau 🙄Checked off the list and I don't need to go again.
🤔🤔
Isn't Port C just for embark/debark?
The cave tube excursion is incredible, in Beliz.
I hear almost 100% positive feedback on that one, so I'm definitely doing this if I get back to Belize!
Been there three times!!! Wonderful!!!
How far is the beach from the cruise port???
@@deepshotone they provide transportation outside of the port area-maybe a 2-3 block walk. It’s about a 15-20 minute ride. They bring you back to the port whenever you’re ready-they make sure to have you back in time to get to the ship.
💯
maya chan is maybe 25 min bumpy road.
Yes! I just featured Graycliff in my Nassau Port Guiebook here: profmelissa.gumroad.com/l/nassau
Freeport is fine, just have to take a taxi to one of the nice beaches. I'd recommend Deadmans reef for a great snorkeling experience in a really chill location (lots of sea turtles)
My daughters and boyfriends were called racist at Nassau with one boyfriend who is Mexican.
I have walked through Progesso by myself as a woman. Never had any issues, and never felt unsafe. Never was told I couldn't use cold hard cash.
@@704musicentgrand Turk is BORING!
We did a lazy river rafting tour and loved it.
Cozumel was dirty when we were there
That makes it nice, huh?
It is obvious your thought of ports is either beach or ruins, otherwise there is no port. Nothing could be farther from the truth. For those who don't beach, there are many other things to consider, which changes the picture immensely. Consider other aspects before whining about any port.
Freeport is being rebuilt, and Carnival is building a big Destination there. Get updated.
For Costa Maya I recommend Maya Chan beach club.
I'm actually heading back to CM in a few weeks, and this is one I'm going to try to check out! Also Krazy Lobster, which people seem to love.
@@ProfMelissa it's not always open. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time, The people are super nice (US expats) and the food is terrific!
I love trying the local foods (admittedly within reason).
Roatan isn't a fave either, but the sloth experience is awesome!
So basically every hated cruise port is disliked because it isn't "just like the U.S."
Just stay at home ppl if you don't want to see the world as it is!
I had a blast at Costa Mya. Spent very little time are port, mainly hung out at Krazy lobster area, great food, more authentic local art vendors
Freeport is run down now but the diving is spectacular!…book the excursion!
Nassau, go to Atlantis by taxi. Tons to do, including a great casino. Baha Mar another great casino.
That's a great way to describe Freeport lol
Another Nassau fan!
Go to Caye Caulker if going to Belize city. AMAZING!
I would have to agree with you. Belieze and Freeport being my least favorite. I have not been to Progresso.
Similar happened to us in costa maya they tried to separate me and my wife by walking in between us, I shoved the guy trying to do it.
I love Junkanoo beach- the fried fish is great. I feel like I was at a totally different beach than what is described
Another negative and positive on Belize: 30 minute tender boat ride is a con. But a positive is the zip line excurisons.
What about the excursions in Costa Maya?
Here are my recommendations! profmelissa.com/costa-maya/
Trying to figure out why mentioning being a university professor has anything to do with cruises or with the ports.
@@tammystreasures8766 My pleasure. BTW, I agree with the opinion on the ports.
If my professors looked like her, I might enjoyed my classes a bit more.
Didn’t mention the pickpockets/crime in Nassau. I’m not getting off the ship. lol I’ll see the Bahamian waters when I go to Cocoa cay
I go to Nassau several times a year an have never had an issue, and I'm not particularly good about being proactive against pickpockets... But yeah, this can definitely happen here or at any cruise port or tourist destination. I do need to be more cautious in general.
There are pickpockets at all ports.. Especially in the European ports
@@drizle80 You are right about that .... I've been fortunate to not have been a victim of pickpocketing but the threat is real.
If you break this into Embarkation Ports, our #1 is Seattle. Absolutely horrid. Embarrassingly inefficient, zero order to things upon arrival and underwhelming signage. Not the best way to get your vacation started.
Interesting, we just sailed on our first cruise there and did not have any issues as first timers…. And two ships were embarking at the time…
Also which one? lol there is more than 1 pier in Seattle… princess/hal up at 91 or NCL closer to downtown?

Wrong! Bimini in the Bahamas is both boring and a dump (in my humble opinion), definately our least favorite port.
I'm curious what you did when you were there? Bimini was probably #6 (just missed this list), but I personally like it b/c of the Bimini Beach Club.
No a fan of Bimini as well but it’s still better than princess cays
I definitely agree. Bimini has become my #1 least favorite cruise port.
Haifa port in Israel isn’t the most fun to get on a cruise ship.
Did you embark the ship at Haifa or was it just a port of call? I did Haifa in summer 2023 and enjoyed the excursion I took despite the extreme temps. Got to see so many Biblical sites.
Progreso is where Cozumel was 20 years ago
not ensenada?!
Ha, that didn't get a lot of comments/votes in my community compared to the others, but I've def heard not-great things about that one.
I definitely hope you give the new Nassau port a try, because it's a night and day difference!
See, I like Bimini, but mostly for the Bimini Beach Club. Other than that, there's not a ton to do.
You left out San Juan. And some places I have been to many times. The ship is nearly empty, pools and hot tubs are available, spa offers discounts and no lines. I enjoy staying on the ship sometimes.
I actually really enjoyed San Juan, PR. The port area was clean, people were friendly, Ubers were cheap. Shopping was good.
@@tammystreasures8766 Yes, I enjoyed San Juan as well. Some of the most friendliest people I've met in the Caribbean.
kick ass excursion would make up for a lousy cruise port
I am a little biased about Freeport. full disclosure, i have a condo on the island and i have many wonderful friends there. I agree that the port is not attractive, but if you venture out there are beautiful beaches west and east of the port. there is Port lucaya the main shopping area (the dolphin encounter leaves out of there). with Carnival's Celebration Key opening in 2025 Freeport might move to a favorite cruise port....
I have a cruise booked for summer 2025 that calls on Celebration Key and can't wait to check it out!
@@ProfMelissa I'm already booked on the Celebration next July and I can't wait to see Celebration key
Personal safety in Jamaica and the crime rates are just terrible
I did an independent excursion (Montego Bay Iberostar with Resort for a Day) with my young daughter (by way of Falmouth) a couple months ago and had no issues and never felt unsafe.
It’s better to take ship sponsored shore excursions in Jamaica for safety reasons. My advice for Nassau is to just either ignore the aggressive vendors or just say no thanks and move on.
I disagree. My husband and I just returned from Jamaica and we used an outside tour vendor and it was great. We were treated with respect and also had a private tour. No problems or issues at all.
Yes, I had a great experience, too, going independent and I did it solo with just my young daughter and had zero issues and never felt unsafe.
