The first time McMahon met Dickerson was in the 1980 Holiday Bowl...or the Miracle Bowl as Jim truly did pull off a miracle in that one! He threw 47 TD passes that year at BYU and it's still the record in the year 2022. I thought Jim was a breath of fresh air in the NFL. There was never a secret what Jim thought about you...he said exactly what he thought! He played with grit even though it appeared he had a target on his back out there.

McMahon might not be the greatest QB of all time, but he's certainly the coolest.

this the second straight shutout in playoff history in sure of it... and the superbowl defense gave up only 10 points

Jim played wonderfully in all three playoff games that year. I firmly believe that the Bears would not have gotten to the Super Bowl without him.

Yes they would have. They never won another super bowl because he couldn't stay healthy though

@@eazye519 The Bears only had 232 yards of offense in the game against the Rams. Of those 232 yards, McMahon personally accounted for 192 of those yards, which is over 80% of all of their yards gained offensively. Ditka himself has said many times that there's no way the Bears win the Super Bowl, or even get to it, without McMahon. Dent and Fencik also feel that way and have publicly said so many times.

@@eazye519 That Rams defense was very, very good. Even with McMahon throwing the way he did, they were still able to hold the Bears' #1 running game to a measly 91 yards [28 of which McMahon himself got, including a 16 yard TD scramble] when they had averaged 173. Watch the first two offensive possessions of that game for the Bears . . . McMahon was the key to getting them that 10-0 lead, and then in the 3rd quarter he completed that key 4th down pass to Payton and called his own play for that TD pass to Gault. From that moment on, the Bears never got another 1st down for the rest of the game, and it gets lost to history that the Rams totally blew a chance to score at the end of the 1st half by letting the clock run out even though they had a timeout remaining. John Robinson, Rams head coach, specifically said after the game that he felt strongly that McMahon was the difference, that he was really impressed by McMahon's mobility and how he could throw INTO the wind. John Madden said the same thing.

@@SECRETARIATguy224 so you're saying the Rams come into Chicago and beat the bears? No chance in hell.

@@eazye519 With McMahon, yes, there's no way the Rams win. Without him, that game would've been a toss-up . . . watch the game in it's entirety and you'll see what I mean. Even WITH McMahon, the Rams totally shut down the Bears' running game. If Fuller plays, the Rams would've clamped down even more on the run, and Fuller would never have been able to throw like McMahon did in that wind.

As an 85 fan, reliving the fan "noise" experience and not just in the stadium but throughout the 5 million + Chicagoans is heartwarming to hear. again. The men on the field deserved to be fairly compensated by ownership - who let slip from their grasp, a decade worth of Championship appearances for a City that deserved it. Let's hope Ownership learned a valuable lesson and pay the young men in the upcoming draft and those men on the field.

Jim said that there was one 85 game where he held back some because of Ditka - the loss to the dolphins. Jim did not hold back in Minnesota. Results speak for themselves. You could not beat Chicago with its crazed defense and healthy offensive weapons in McMahon, Peyton, and Suhey. And of course honorable mention must go to the fridge as a secret weapon.

Someone from the Los Angeles area at that time said to me the Rams are a spoiled warm weather team. I don't know if that had anything to do with the team's loss in this game in cold climate Chicago.
