Those are great tips! I never thought of using a favorite song as a blueprint. I always look to court progressions and scales for my blueprint but it's so much easier just to find a song I like and then kind of twist it around a little bit
This video inspired me to actually do something on the guitar that was my own, I’d been practicing for so long doing other peoples songs that I didn’t even realize I could make good music on my own.
His videos have been so helpful in my struggle to write songs, where I wouldn't know where to start with guitar! but now it's gotten much easier! He's real MVP right here!
Tyler my friend you said you were never good in melodies and in lyrics. But the way i write a song i begin by melodies.Melodies are things wich come from yourself and before i even sit down to write i have my melodie in mind. The same thing happens to lyrics where everything comes from your little head.My songs have been written with lyrics that have some messages in them so i can teach people something.I NEVER wrote a love song because i find very easy to write, for example "We could get around in the sunshine baby but it's not time for that,we should have married down road mine but it's not time for that".So easy.
Hi, I'm so glad I found you! My idea of songwriting was exactly the same, I just didn't know how to expand it. The main thing I see here is that I need to practice more (lol) but your video actually gave me an inspiration. Thank you, I hope you'll have an awesome day! ❤
I'm a Metallica fan. Their older stuff will always be the best but I think St. Anger is a very underrated album. There's no album that sounds like that. I mean how is Some Kind of Monster, Sweet Amber, Frantic, Invisible Kid, and that Unnamed Feeling bad? Anyway this vid has helped me extremely in my song writing. Thank you.
I have a lot of great ideas. Funnily enough, I have a tune based on D - C - G chords too. I play the chords and do some fills between the progressions on the D minor pentatonic. I repeat the chord progression three times, then I go to C - G - D. I repeat that progression about three times then slide down to A, bang on that for a few bars, then back to the beginning. I have some lyrics....just not enough of them....LOL!
For me writing songs on guitar is WAY easier than playing covers, I played out for years and never did one cover.I SUCK at covers. I wonder why that is?
I'm the same. there are 2 main reasons we suck at covers: 1- you can't play your music wrong 2-we inherently value our originality more than someone elses
charles brown I like that. I too did a small stint a Berklee in 96 summer guitar sessions and have played out blah blah paid for all my own material. BUT you say let's do a cover. Nope. Lol. It's like I'm learning all over again. I do write parts that are tricky a few times and do tank my own riffs but I just don't have it in me to sweat others music unless I really want to.( if we did we'd make bank though, those cover bands do pretty well as aposed to guys like us. But hey, I'm original and want my own style.)Sometimes I do, but I forget it right after I'm done with it.
covers get found sometimes in the process of writing original music lol... that's the moments I really enjoy, playing something familiar on accident then thinking for a min 'what bloody song is that from'
We all know there are 2 types of guitarist at the beginning, the ones that only learn cover songs and the ones that only fidget and write their own riffs, some people do both but it's less common for beginners. Which would you say is a better skill to start with for long run and short run? Growing the ability to learn music easier or getting to know the guitars neck along with sounds, and tricks
excellent videos, thank you for these videos, wish you as much success as possible. can you please do one on going from one section of a song to another?
I really liked the Jimi Hendrix reference. Although a generic reference, it's true. You can always tell his style apart from others and had similar tendencies he'd fall into, either by mistake or on purpose, that defined him as an artist. We all try to mimic others instead of embrace our own tendencies, habits, or flaws. MAKE THE MUSIC YOUR OWN. Rock is missing individuality so PLEASE, stray from the norms. It's okay to have influences but for the love of god just be yourself.
I'd wish st anger wasn't made by metallica but was some bands first album, we could definitely use some more bands with that raw unpolished sound, also, if someone else pulled off those lyrics they would definitely get fans, but just because it was vastly different from 'the metallica sound' it was rejected by everyone. who knows some bands in that style and with such intention? I can't find something like it
My dream is to be a great song writer. These much within me that needs conveying. I know I can create beauty and masterpieces but it’s learning how to get it out
When you said: “I doubt there are any flutists watching this”.... I chuckled. I play flute, played it in middle school orchestra and then again in High School Jazz band (fuck yeah Tull) before switching to guitar primarily. Haha
This video right here shows EXACTLY why "Music Theory kills your feel and creativity!" is a stupid thing to say. Yes, I can see how someone could get too bogged down but MT rules and it COULD kill their creativity, but learning bare bone basics like notes on the fretboard, chord construction and key signatures ALL played a part in that (fucking awesome) thing that Tyler did with Sweet Home Alabama, and with the part about finding a chord you like and letting it lead you, ALL of that is practically impossible without basic Music Theory knowledge.

If someone had asked me when I first picked up the guitar and struggling to wrap my fingers around the bar chords do you think you’ll ever write your own songs. I would have scoffed at you and said nah man I’m not ever gonna be that good. Now, just over 15 months after I began, I’m writing my own stuff that’s playable, singable and gets stuck in my head.
