Great video! One thing that's great about the RZ is it works so well with strobe. You don't even need the PC cable just throw the remote in the hot shoe and you're good to go! (As long as your strobe has a radio built in which any modern strobe does) Also the Mamiya uses leaf shutter lens so you can synch at any speed. Going all the up to the highest shutter speed works great.
Great to see your openness in showing what didn’t go so well in addition to what did, it’s something that I think is important for people trying to build their own experience up to see
Stellar video. So useful for everyone looking to use strobes and film. Using a mirrorless to get your settings is what I do as well. Shooting Nikon SLRs along with a Bronica ETRSi, these are used with Godox lights and trigger. The Bronica works flawlessly with the Godox nikon trigger. Makes it so easy to use the mirrorless Z6 to set it all up then switch over to F5 or F3 and Bronica ETRSi for the shots.
@@SophiaCarey Basically your apature will control your flash exposure (I.E. The light from your strobe) and the shutter speed will control your ambiant light (or continuous lightning if using mixed sources) . If all the light in the scene is coming from your strobe then your shutter speed is irrelevant. Have fun exploring the options! 😊
Hey good that you started using strobes with the Rz. It shines in the studio. The Rz sync speed is 1/400th. When I’ve used strobes I’ve only put the transmitter on the side of the camera and the other goes on the lights. Works a charm. I use elinchrom. Hope this helps
which transmitter and receiver kit do you use? I tried with a ebay cheap one which works perfectly on digital but skips half of the shots on my rz and other film cameras..... I'm not sure what's going on
Sophia, I have speedlights and when connecting them to the RB/RZ these have a METAL cold shoe, this IS most likely one of the problems ( the metal shorts terminals in the flash base, which do the "TTL" in the slr's, so they DON'T fire); a solution, set them to A/GN/M and use an adaptor (trigger/shoe/speedlight) with a PLASTIC base, some wireless trigger sets come with ONE transmitter with a metal base, one with plastic base; USE the PLASTIC one for the CAMERA end!! this transmits the 'fire' signal through the PC cable, and not through a short on the camera shoe, which is where the signal from slr's come from.( Also try putting the flash table stand on the flash, and ONLY have the cable on the camera/lens). the next problem is the PC socket, for one you have M and X sync (M = 1/60th micro second delay for magi-cube and chemical bulb style flash systems{pre-xenon bulb style speedlight designs}), the other is the fit of the cable, if the center pin is skewed, broken, or the outer tube of the connector is damaged, or the socket/shutter connections on camera body, this can stop working, or give intermittent problems, so get them fixed. Shutter design is another issue, relevent to flash, as if it is a focal plane (curtain) shutter there is a sync speed to allow it to work (1/60;1/125;1/30th); but a leaf shutter works at all speeds, IF the shutter works properly [ what I mean is some LF cameras, linhof's for eg. have a M/T/B switch, this is like the B or T setting on your slr's shutter speed dial, but bulb, time(toggle open/close) and normal timed speed mode is set independent of the shutter time , aka 1/2;1/50th of a second!!, so if this lever is NOT on M, the flash won't fire either ].
I really want to try some studio shoots with my Bronica sqai but jesus it’s seriously so nerve racking. Thank you for showing the good and the bad and letting us all learn with you. That’s so important
I think you should be able to use a trigger on your hot shoe if it is working without any wires! Mine doesn’t seem to work but lots of other people say that works for them!
I shoot with strobe on my GW690II. It syncs over all shutter speeds, but I had to tape the shutter release cord in place. I used gaffers tape. Good pictures and great channel
You can sync mamiya with every shutterspeed bc it uses a leaf shutter and the shutter is actualy in the lens and it doesnt have any problem with syinc speed bc every speed is a syinc speed
Yes, but not every light can be synced at every speed because of the flash duration is shorter than the max shutter speed than the camera (such as with this light, the Neewer Vision 4)
Leaf shutter lenses will sync at all available shutter speeds on that particular lens. In the absence of ambient light, the aperture will dictate the exposure. I would strongly advise you to get a flashmeter, it takes the guess work out of studio flash photography.
It uses a leaf shutter so can sync at any speed. I usually use slower speeds depending on the sync speed of the lights I'm using, just to be on the safe side, though

Shoots like this are always about learning more than the results, just a part of the never-ending process 🙌🏼👏🏼
Definitely is! It’s the fun of photography

Thanks so much Gareth! And thanks for all of the help!
@@SophiaCarey It was a pleasure to see you working, tough lighting conditions all round

Ooh amazing! It’s good to know that that set up works well, thanks for sharing!
Love the shots on the sofa! Those lights man, they give me a headache 🤣
Ahh honestly 🤣🤣 thank you so much for the help!
The Mamiya RB and RZ lenses have leaf shutters so will sync at all speeds, so more flexibility than the focal-plane in the Sony.
Looking forward to syncing at all speeds! I plan to shoot a roll when I have time and try a photo at a variety of speeds to tear it out

I wonder if you know anything about using completely wireless strobe setup for the rz?

Ah interesting! I might give tape a try 👀 and thank you!!
I appreciate your transparency in sharing your shooting experience
I watch your content when I can’t get around to shooting my own RZ lol
Great shoots 🔥🔥🔥 I can feel the atmosphere

Wonderful stuff Sophia ❤️❤️
As a few have said the whole point of the Rz is a used as studio camera hence the leaf shutters optics. Same as bronica and hassys.
what's the shutter sync for the rz67 pro ii? for strobe lighting
It uses a leaf shutter so can sync at any speed. I usually use slower speeds depending on the sync speed of the lights I'm using, just to be on the safe side, though
@@SophiaCarey so like 1/60 or 1/125th is good ?
@@BenThayorath yeah I try to stick around 1/125 for most strobe work, including on digital
@@SophiaCarey thx
The mathematic equations required when shooting film in these lighting conditions is tough, could’ve done with Allan Turing on hand 😆
Haha trust me 🤣
At least you should get a Sekonic L-308X-U
Definitely looking to get a light meter soon so I’ll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation
Mamamia ??????
I started using strobe w my rb few months definitely a game changer🥹
