Out of the ones I heard it had to be Lemonade. I just re listened to it all today and wow. So many little things here and there are what make it perfect for me. What a great narrative. Even when you feel it may be too quick for something it feels right. This is what music should be like.
My favorites are: Lemonade by Beyonce When You Sleep by The 1975 Light Upon The Lake by Whitney Puberty 2 by Mitski Sincerely by Stephen Nothing's Real by Shura A Seat at the Table by Solange Blackstar by David Bowie My Woman by Angel Olsen Remember Us To Life by Regina Spektor
Top 5: 5. Lemonade - Beyonce 4. Blonde - Frank Ocean 3. Strangers - Marissa Nadler 2. Run The Jewels 3 - Run The Jewels 1. The Impossible Kid - Aesop Rock Some stuff about #1: It was the most personal, and accessible album we've gotten from an artist who doesn't normally do that, while delivering the same extreme level of lyrical quality he's known for.
Random facts found perusing Wikipedia: Dave Cobb has been producing for a little over ten years, with the first thing credited to him being from 2005. The title of that first album he produced? Astoria.
My personal list of my favourite albums of 2016: 10: Ball Park Music - Every Night the Same Dream 9: Matt Corby - Telluric 8: James Blake - The Colour in Anything 7: Glass Animals - How to Be a Human Being 6: SAFIA - Internal 5: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity 4: D.D Dumbo - Utopia Defeated 3: The Avalanches - Wildflower 2: RÜFÜS - Bloom 1: Flume - Skin HMs: 1: Client Liaison - Diplomatic Immunity 2: Montaigne - Glorious Heights 3: David Bowie - Blackstar 4: Miike Snow - iii 5: Tkay Maidza - Tkay 6: Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 7: The 1975 - I Like it When You Sleep...
★is in my mind one of the best songs to be released in my 13 year old life. I can't wait to see children's in the future and tell them two things. One what was a bee, and two, what album you remember the most. Sure it might not be the best, but it is one of them and DEFINITELY the most memorable. I remember clearly going to Barnes and Nobles and getting ★ the Saturday before the Monday he passed. On Sunday I woke up in the morning, ate my breakfast, and I put ★ in my DVD player to listen to. After it was done, I was stunned at the experimentation and darkness in this album. Then, I woke up on Monday morning getting ready for school, when I saw in my sub box a video from ABC News that said that Bowie died. I was frozen from shock. I went through school saddened and alert in the brain. I got home from school, and I went straight to my room to reassess what today has been. When I was thinking about him, I thought about the album. There was something in my head going on connecting the news to the album. I listened to the lyrics extra thoughts in mind, I was listening thinking to myself on why it wasn't clearer before. He wrote ★ about him dying. It was kind of a mindfuck of brilliance.
Great to see Kyle Craft's Dolls of Highland high up the list. Has such a dynamic, instant sound and intriguing slightly dark storytelling. Hard not to feel really great listening to this.
Fantastic to see Soar on this list! That alum went over my head at first, especially given some of the other stellar Atmospheric Black Metal albums this year like those by Sojourner and Winterfellyeh. However after a second listen, the entire scope and enveloping wall of sound it gives is simply beautiful! 2016 was a fantastic year for Atmospheric Black Metal, and 2017 is already off to a good start with the new Moongates Guardian album. Summoning should be proud!
I really need to listen to more country music.... I feel like I'd enjoy it.... Also, great list, Mark. A lot different from the other lists like this you've made, in that the music seems a lot less mainstream, there's a lot less pop. Especially compared to last year's list. Which just further confirms that pop music had a pretty bad year... But I might have to check out some of the albums on here that are less my style. I want to check out more country, or maybe some hip-hop. To be honest, the best album I listened to for the first time in 2016 was The Black Parade. A ten year old record. I think I maybe need to explore more music outside my comfort zone (which is pop, rock, synthpop, and other pop based generas).
Poe357 I listened to it for the first time this year as well. I was half-expecting to be disappointed because of all the praise/hype but was surprised to be blown away. I love it.
Mark actually introduces me to a lot of great artists I never heard of and that has made me loyal...because of him I am a fan of Doomtree, Chrvches, and Father John Misty among others
If you want to get into more challenging Rock music, Progressive Rock is in a great spot right now. I highly recommend The Dear Hunters "Act V: Hymns With The Devil In Confessional". Not only is it unusuably accessible for the genre and as such an easy start, it's also one of the best albums released this year and will get stuck in your head. Hakens "Affinity" is equally as good, but harder to get into with its long and at times incredibly complex songs. As far as modern Pop music goes, you have to check out Everything Everything. They're one of the most talented and forward thinking groups today.
Ended up checking out Southern Family and Kyle Craft thanks to this. Still need to get to Brandy Clark, Stirgill Simpson, Lori Mckenna and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. And those are just the things I can remember from the list right now.
I initially absolutely adored Big Day In A Small Town, but while I still absolutely adore individual songs like Since You've Gone To Heaven, Three Kids, No Husband and Homecoming Queen, and Brandy Clark is still one of my favourite artists, the production on the album got old very quickly for me. Still, I'm glad to see someone gave her her dues anyway
Thanks for continuing to upload quality material! I have checked out Shura and Denzel Currey after your reviews this last year. Keep up the great work!!!!
Real made me cry when I first heard it. But if you don't mind me asking, what was the 'turbulent emotional time' you were going through around the time you first heard it?
Before you start, MUSIC VOL. by CoH How to Dance by Mount Moriah that morse code album by Mesarthim The Human Condition by Jon Bellion Sky Simplified by Me Sleep Cycles by Deakin Third Law by Roly Porter Moth by Chairlift ok how close were we
It really is remarkable how much Mark's delivery has improved in the last five years. I've been a fan since around this time, and I thought that I had just gotten used to the slightly stilted delivery, but looking back, it's just that he's gotten a lot better.
The list is really good. Agree on a bit, three of them to be exact. Here's mine (yes, I know most of mine likely weren't evn candidates): 1. Southern Family, Various Artists 2. Blackstar, David Bowie 3. Skeleton Tree, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 4. E•MO•TION: Side B, Carly Rae Jepsen 5. Metal Resistance, BABYMETAL 6. Love You To Death, Tegan and Sara 7. Glad to see someone give Shura the credit they deserve! The more I think about it, it might take top spot for me. A damn near perfect album, let alone a debut!
interesting list. I'm not that big on country but I do know there's great albums out there outside of the mainstream. My favorite album is Atrocity Exhibition for sure
Avantadia, Cass/lang/viers, varmints ,Kongos, Sims,A Tribe Called Quest , Saor, Sturgill Simpson, Open Mike Eagle and Paul White, Lori McKenna, Kyle Craft, Lydia Loveless, and Dave Cobb are the albums if yours I'll check out
table kun I should just splurge and get it on iTunes one of these days; I've heard nothing but good things about it. She probably will release it elsewhere eventually.
A day or two, riiiiiiiiiight... Anyway, I know quite a few albums on this list, for 2017 I'm going to try and listen to more albums. Oh, and thanks Mark for recommending #3 to me :)
10. Clams Casino - 32 Levels (Cloud Rap/Electronica) 9. Denzel Curry - Imperial (Hip Hop) 8. Kero Kero Bonito - Bonito Generation (Electropop/Bubblegum Pop) 7. J. Cole - 4 Your Eyez Only (Hip Hop) 6. Lord RAJA - PARA (Downtempo/IDM) 1. Mothers - When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired (Indie Rock/Folk Rock)
Personally, I think if you want some good metal that came out this year, I would recommend "The Last Stand" by Sabaton. Personally, I really thought it was a great slice of power metal, with songs focusing on famous last stands in military history. It might just be that the album panders directly to me with my love of power metal and military history, but I really enjoyed it, and considering you enjoy acts like Epica, Nightwish and Kamelot, you probably would too. Also, if you're looking for bands that blend Celtic folk with heavy metal, I would recommend the band Eluveitie, who are known for doing just that.
+Kyle jeboss it's just like movies. My most enjoyed movie is Deadpool but I know for sure it's not the best movie of the year. imo that would be Moonlight
Kyle jeboss Lemonade was the best created and best written. It was artistic, it was passionate, it was soulful. It was the best, but quality does not equate to enjoyment. In my opinion: 1. Lemonade - Beyoncé 2. Starboy - The Weeknd 3. Glory Days - Little Mix 4. Dangerous Woman - Ariana Grande 5. I Remember - Alunageorge 6. 24K Magic - Bruno Mars 7. Lady Wood - Tove Lo 8. Wild World - Bastille 9. Joanne - Lady Gaga 10. Anti - Rihanna
So, there are Regina Spektor, Shura, Beyoncé, plus Brandy Clark and KONGOS and Anna Meredith and Lori McKenna and Lydia Loveless and maybe Anderson .Paak*, which I would have reviewed if I saw them coming. Except for Anna, because I was in a bad "I'm an unhealable pleb and I don't listen to underground because I won't get it anyway, pop me some Pitbull" mood and I just avoided it. But you hate pop music. Riiiiiiight. (Boy, am I over the Me Too review quickly. Last year I'd not be.) *I expected a Post Malone jab here. I'm disappointed. But I loved that final attack on the mainstream anyway. It was identifiable. I always do this when I end up fighting with Swifties and similars. They just aren't interested in trying new voices and talents *cough* LION BABE *cough* and just stick to what charts. I still wish pop music got more meritocratic in 2017. I honestly wish Sturgill won album lf the year instead of Lemonade just to see the baby audience go "WHOOOO? TROLOLOLOL!" on the Facebook comments. I have my Will.i.am facepalming photo ready for the reply. Aesop Rock has a sexy voice. Not my genre, but a real sexy voice.
Mia Summers Yes. I couldn't like something I didn't know about before. It's like when I was 13 and I used magazines as a direction for new music. It was like searching for gemstones on a beach. Nothing at all.
Goddess Of Change Lion Babe's album was great and tragically Underrated, I thought she was Erykah Badu's Daughter because they sound similiar vocal-wise
The other day an Italian pop page has announced the return of Shaina Twain. Everybody in the comments was like "Who?" "Who is she?". Why. Why. Why. I'm also just getting into Kasey Chambers, as she released a new album. I'm so curious to see what's new.
What do you mean get over it? Like, I am going into 2017 with a fear of what Donald Trump and the republican party are going to do to my health care (with its delightful pre-existing conditions), are going to do about my right to work without being fired because I'm gay. I'm supposed to get over the fact that I have legitimate concerns going forward? People are not "salty" over Donald Trump because they think Hillary Clinton is some great person, they are because they are worried about how Donald Trump will affect their lives, and are suspecting that it will be a negative effect. No one can predict the future of course, very accurately anyways, but I just hope the life of myself and people I love will not suffer because of what Donald Trump has pledged to do.
No. I'm not going to get over the fact that Trump may lose me my health insurance, or sign a law that lets any potential employer fire me because I'm gay. I'm not going "get over" that. Get over the fact that my life my start sucking more than it is? The fact that my medication might start costing me more than it already does? A medication that I need in order to function? I mean, I probably can afford it, for maybe a year depending on what the price is increased to uninsured. After that, fuck all I don't know what I'd do with those savings gone. Now, I don't know if you want this, but if you do want people to listen to your opinion (like, "get over it") then you should probably try to empathize with them on some level? Although if you're just trying to hold onto a shallow sense of superiority and don't actually care about the lives of others, then well... I hope you're succeeding, even without the satisfaction that anyone is actually following your instruction.
Out of the ones I heard it had to be Lemonade. I just re listened to it all today and wow. So many little things here and there are what make it perfect for me. What a great narrative. Even when you feel it may be too quick for something it feels right. This is what music should be like.

Sad that Foxes didn't make the list, but I really liked learning about your favorites! I also really liked the tie! So fancy, Mark!
Great to see Kyle Craft's Dolls of Highland high up the list. Has such a dynamic, instant sound and intriguing slightly dark storytelling. Hard not to feel really great listening to this.
I feel like the more I listen, the more new I discover. Kyle Craft is an artist I won't stop following or spreading.
You know when Atrocity Exhibition is only 24 that it was a great year for albums.
I really appreciate these. I am introduced to so much good music, it's a steal.
I disagree with Southern Family above Skeleton Tree, but I love this list regardless.
He said that they are interchangeable for him, as he always was changing the order around, so really they're both first for him.
Benjamin Tirone Nunes Fair.

Ended up checking out Southern Family and Kyle Craft thanks to this. Still need to get to Brandy Clark, Stirgill Simpson, Lori Mckenna and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. And those are just the things I can remember from the list right now.
Hm, it's been 2 months. Not sure who you got to, but may I reccomend Case/Lang/Viers for you?

Yep! :)
It's gonna be his first review of the new year.

I absolutely loved real by Lydia Loveless so are there any other artists similar to her? I would really appreciate some recommendations.
Glad to see someone give Shura the credit they deserve! The more I think about it, it might take top spot for me. A damn near perfect album, let alone a debut!
Hold up! Was Regina Spektor that woman who sang the intro of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" remake on Fox?
interesting list. I'm not that big on country but I do know there's great albums out there outside of the mainstream. My favorite album is Atrocity Exhibition for sure
Aw man I loved that Superbad comparison with Car Seat Headrest

AAAAA REGINA SPEKTOR.
WOOOOOOOO.
GO REGINA GO
Everybody go LISTEN to Remember Us To Life right now.
it's her best album since Far.
I've been wanting to listen to Lemonade but it's so damn expensive and I'm not Apple Music, not Tidal. Anyway, good list and video, Mark.
table kun I should just splurge and get it on iTunes one of these days; I've heard nothing but good things about it. She probably will release it elsewhere eventually.

I still cant believe you never got around to covering Painkillers from Bryan Fallon. I have a feeling you'd love it.
"Rest of Doomtree? Sims raised the stakes with this. I want to hear some competition."
Two years later...
Nice video!
It says 2015 in the description, might wanna change that
Yeah, Superbad is definitely a classic.
Skeleton Tree is far more affecting and unique than Southern Family. But das okay. Cool list!
The best album of the year in my opinion is Lemonade by Beyonce
The most enjoyable/my personal favourite is Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande
What's the difference between best and most enjoyed?
+Kyle jeboss it's just like movies. My most enjoyed movie is Deadpool but I know for sure it's not the best movie of the year. imo that would be Moonlight
Kyle jeboss Lemonade was the best created and best written. It was artistic, it was passionate, it was soulful. It was the best, but quality does not equate to enjoyment.
Ariana's album is no where near as artistically inventive as Lemonade, the production isn't as good and the songs aren't as well written. But I enjoy it a hell of a lot more.
marco bazan's analogy was correct. It's like the difference between liking a film like La La Land, and a film like Deadpool.
She didn't even write it, fuck beoncaye
Leon the third doesn't change the quality of the album
Excuse me good sir, but it appears your description says "2015."
I think You Will Never Be One Of Us by Nails is easily the best album of the year. When I first heard the album I loved it so much I listened to nothing else for two weeks. That album is rage personified.
The other albums I loved this year (in not particular order) are Epic- the holographic principle, street sects- end position, wormrot- voices, altarage- nihl, ghost- popestar, death grips- bottomless pit, Denzel curry- imperial, Danny brown- atrocity exhibition, ka- honor killed the samurai, RTJ- RTJ 3, clipping., wriggle and splendor and misery, meshuggah- the violent sleep of reason, dark tranquillity- Atoma, tender defender- self titled, david Bowie- blackstar, car seat headrest- teens of denial, oathbreaker- Rheia, and show me the body- body war.
Shit. I forgot Terminal redux by Vektor.
I'm surprised that Real ranked THAT high
Leonard Cohen? great list btw mark lol
My favorite is the holographic principle by epica
Here's to 2017
a day or two or seven
Run the Jewels 3? Or will that count for 2017?
It will count for 2017 because the physical CDs come out January 1st. He said as much on his twitter.
Aron puma thanks! that makes sense, especially since it's incredible
Shit, I actually had to watch, rip description
In my opinion:
1. Lemonade - Beyoncé
2. Starboy - The Weeknd
3. Glory Days - Little Mix
4. Dangerous Woman - Ariana Grande
5. I Remember - Alunageorge
6. 24K Magic - Bruno Mars
7. Lady Wood - Tove Lo
8. Wild World - Bastille
9. Joanne - Lady Gaga
10. Anti - Rihanna
do your worst next
Southern Family vs. Skeleton Tree for Number 1 I called it
Everyone knew it would come down to those two.
I honestly think bowie should've been higher
I think I already know what number 1 is.
a day or two
Why no grime
Also, I'm surprised no Human Condition or Hamilton Mixtape
Liam Carmody the human condition had a lot of messy, messy music on it. bellion has the potentail, but hes isnt there yet
Liam Carmody Human Condition is a 7/10
I was gonna get mad that Blackstar was only #20, but then I realized it's #22 on my personal list.
there is no questions about objectivity that need to be raised because objective criticism don't exist mark
Starboy number 1
Starboy number 2
Starboy number 3
Zayn Mind of Mine??
Blonde???
He didn't like it that much. Anything less than an 8/10 doesn't have a chance at these lists.
No Revolution Radio
The only bad thing about this list is I will have to spend a lot more money, on some albums of course
Cool that Damon Albarn was on a De La Soul song and De La Soul were on a Gorillaz song
Even if the Gorillaz song is almost 12 years old
I thought Shura's album came out in 2015? Wtf?
July 2016, actually.
Teddy Haines
OMG! I swear it was summer 2015! What is this sorcery?
*****
You got me, but check Wikipedia if you don't believe me.
doesn't matter with my top 10 I'll do my top 3
3 Testament Brotherhood Of Snakes
2 Insomnium Winter's Gate
1 Vektor Terminal Redux
hard 2 love of Usher should have been on the list.
Blackstar better be on here.
It is, man.
Yeah, but at number 20? It deserves to be much higher on the list.
Uses the word "Transcendence" but wastes a perfectly good opportunity to plug Transcendence by Devin Townsend in transition.
25.Watch and see or i'am to lazy
Or I want it to be a surprise.
Spoiler alert 24K Magic isn't on the list😔😔
Frank ocean??
He only gave it a 7/10. Too low to make it to this list
gole311 then this list is not valid
I literally never heard of none of these albums.
Last year I'd not be.)
*I expected a Post Malone jab here.
Mia Summers I barely even touched country last year. This year I'm more curious.
Deonte Kelly EVERYONE BUY BEGIN RN.
The other day an Italian pop page has announced the return of Shaina Twain. Everybody in the comments was like "Who?" "Who is she?".
Why.
Why.
Why.
I'm also just getting into Kasey Chambers, as she released a new album. I'm so curious to see what's new.
UGH people need to stop giving lemonade attention. Otherwise awesome list
Solange's album was definitely better than Beyonce's...and that's fax
No printer?
Teddy Haines nah
to be honest Lemonade was a bit overrated
Negan no
Lol you're still salty over trump. Get over it
What do you mean get over it?
Aron puma you're right I should've explained myself better, what I meant to say was, get the fuck over it
Aron puma get over it
Aron puma get over people not getting over it
