  • Gerry Sova founded Captain Keno's, the oldest restaurant in Encinitas, in 1970 using funds that he won playing Keno in Las Vegas. Through the decades he (and his restaurant) became an Encinitas institution, known for serving generous portions of wholesome and hearty food. He often helped people who through bad times. For instance he served Thanksgiving dinner for nominal price, but only if you could afford it; if not, no charge. Because Gerry Sova was helped so many and was so liked, and since Captain Keno's was such a legendary place to not only eat but to meet old friends, the Encinitas City Council honored him with a special ceremony. Unfortunately, Sova had an unfortunate accident just the day before and so he could not attend ... even though it was his birthday too.
