What's beautiful about this, is that this is the first time his music goes from sorrowful to truly happy. And you hear that break when he thinks of her and how shes truky the first person hes met in a while who doesn't care that he went to jail. She doesnt see him as a criminal. And that gives him hope, which you can hear in that little change. Opal just represents true kindness in this film. She gives the credit to winn Dixie, but its really the love in her heart that heals the loneliness of all those people she met. In fact, it was her kindness and protection of winn Dixie that kept him from going to the pound. Her desire to help people not feel lonely is a thing of our beauty.
that chord progression he plays when he tells the story just goes so well with it, I know musicians don't do too well in movies most of the time but this should've been Oscar material
After all these years, this song still warms my heart. My teacher had us read the book and watch the movie. Elementary school was really tough, but this story was my favorite part of fifth grade. Now as a 27 year old this song still makes me tear up. ❤
Same boat - I loved this as a kid, now I’m 27 understanding the story on a deeper level- it hits different when you’ve got a lot more bottles hangin in your tree, but you can hear them make music when the wind blows…
It’s 2022 and this scene STILL to this day gets me so emotional I’ve read the book and seen this amazing movie a million times and a cry so hard at this scene right here the beautiful melody and the raw emotion in his vocals gets me in the feels 😢😢💕💕
My granddaughter and I watched this the other night. I've seen it more than a few times and I kept saying he's a lucky man... My granddaughter said no... He's not a lucky man. So powerful
That girl is famous herself, she hangs out with famous people all the time so it's probably no big deal to her. She is the girl from the movie Bridge to Terabithia with Josh Hutcherson and was in a movie with The Rock called Race to Witch Mountain.
Well I remember third grade when I seen this my favorite teacher Mrs. LeBlanc and I can't forget this scene because she was the only teacher who really taught me something
It was a perfect day so I felt like playing music I put my hat out there But I wasnt really playing for money I just thought that maybe if somone was enjoying it they might throw a little change in there This policeman came up to me he said I was disturbing the peace He tried to take my guitar away from me I guess I got real angry at him [Chorus] But I'm not a bad man I'm just not a lucky man Anyway they told me that I broke that policeman nose They charged me with assault on a police officer No matter what I said they wouldn't listen They gave me three years [Chorus] I said I'm not a bad man I'm just not a lucky man When Otis started playing his song and talking about how he went to jail it sounded like a song he might write so I wrote it down and thought the phrase "I'm not a bad man I'm just not a lucky man" would make a good chorus
Remembered you in Austin City Limits I was enthralled with your performance. Think you are a wonderful actor in because of wine dixie. I like Doo Woo groups like the Del Vikings, The Capris, the Duprees, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Cheers Sir
Superb scene from Dave man that scene is just amazing!! Why did this song don’t make it to the soundtrack on the album? It might be a licensing thing or something. But I still absolutely love this song!! It gives me chills every time!❤😊
Amy Morris I saw it years ago, but this awesome scene stuck in my mind. I just think Dave Matthews mannerisms are funny in a none condescending sort of way xD
When he goes from talking, to singing "I'm not a lucky man" - got the chills
I just got the chills too!!😍
i watched this with my students & choked up during that part
Bro so did I
Every. Single. Time.

Outstanding Acting by Dave Matthews.
Fun fact: before he got the band together Dave was a stage actor on the side while he was a bartender.
Dave did anything to make money

Brilliant synopsis
You nailed that
when he sings that song i think hes almost relating it to the innocence that she has and it makes my heart ache for some reason
Same!
That’s the kind of music that speaks to your soul.
It’s not just soothing to ears, it’s soothing to heart and soul too.
Just like his Classic Song EVERYDAY... 😭😭😭
my whole childhood right here... brings back so many memories watching this scene.
yes indeed it does
This movie is the genesis of my Dave Matthews infatuation. He is still my favorite male singer. The movie is wonderful.
Dave Matthews needs to do more acting. Underrated. . .
An entire three minutes and sixteen seconds that will never get old.
I love this scene so much. It always gets to me.
Me too
Such a perfect, simple, emotionally raw song. 🦋
Hit me in the feels man
Dammit! Who put all these chopped onions here?
damn right
Right in em. I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying.
Gets me too everytime I see BOWD or hear this song.

I had never heard of Dave Matthews until I saw BOWD. Although this is not the genre I normally listen to, I googled him and I absolutely love his work
+Mildred Alford I'm sort of doing the same thing. I've heard of him, but he didn't interest me until now.
Andy Lavandero have you seen any of his concerts?
No.
+Andy Lavandero You should bro. His live stuff can be so fun.
Me Too! Googled him and love him! I still prefer him by himself or with Tim instead of the DMB. HIs voice and his guitar all stripped away. . . . .
It’s 2022 and this scene STILL to this day gets me so emotional I’ve read the book and seen this amazing movie a million times and a cry so hard at this scene right here the beautiful melody and the raw emotion in his vocals gets me in the feels 😢😢💕💕
Music soothes the heart and soul, and also the savage beast.
I don’t know why I love Dave Matthews but this song exemplifies my obsession
I love this scene 😭
i said im not a bad man... im just not a lucky man..
Favorite scene
My granddaughter and I watched this the other night. I've seen it more than a few times and I kept saying he's a lucky man... My granddaughter said no... He's not a lucky man. So powerful
Does that little girl even appreciate how lucky she is? Dave singing to her? 😍😍😍
That girl is famous herself, she hangs out with famous people all the time so it's probably no big deal to her. She is the girl from the movie Bridge to Terabithia with Josh Hutcherson and was in a movie with The Rock called Race to Witch Mountain.
more 40 year old women crush on Dave than any other star cause the others are taken by the girl
That smile when he sing you are like a butterfly says yes she does
Dave is the way love wants to be understood.
Not a bad man. Not an unlucky man. Just a sad man 😢. That’s all. Broken. But broken can be fixed ❤️
OMG. I LOVE THIS MAN. 💖 I wish there was more to this song.. it makes my heart feel some type of way.
There is. I found it on RUclips. There's an instrumental version and a longer, live version with lyrics.
This scene is like every Dave and Tim show when Dave starts talking
So true. I thought the same thing when watching it. Good acting yes, but that’s Dave being Dave.
@@StillBelieve22 it's funny, as I got older it got on my nerves. Now as he gets older I realize it's not an act and he's just like that. Haha
Favorite scene in this entire movie.
I love this song so much it actually hurts
Virginia naked in the rain.
My absolutely favourite dave Mathews song.
After this one of course.
Before I was aware of DMB and went to 63 shows, I saw this when I was 9 and I remember my heart breaking for this man lol.
D is Dave's home chord. \m/
+Tim Phillips He's great in Drop D, too. (Bartender)
@@Broadwaymungo Dont drink the water as well :)
I love this movie and song
Gotta love Dave
Well I remember third grade when I seen this my favorite teacher Mrs. LeBlanc and I can't forget this scene because she was the only teacher who really taught me something
My third grade teacher, Mrs. Burkett, showed my class this movie and i remember punching my friends in the arm cause they kept talking over this scene
R.I.P Cicely Tyson😔🙏
Probably the best scene from the whole movie in my opinion!
I've never seen this movie but I love this song man I love this song helps me be in the moment. ❤️
It was a perfect day so I felt like playing music
I put my hat out there
But I wasnt really playing for money
I just thought that maybe if somone was enjoying it they might throw a little change in there
This policeman came up to me he said I was disturbing the peace
He tried to take my guitar away from me
I guess I got real angry at him
[Chorus]
But I'm not a bad man
I'm just not a lucky man
Anyway they told me that I broke that policeman nose
They charged me with assault on a police officer
No matter what I said they wouldn't listen
They gave me three years
[Chorus]
I said I'm not a bad man
I'm just not a lucky man
When Otis started playing his song and talking about how he went to jail it sounded like a song he might write so I wrote it down and thought the phrase "I'm not a bad man I'm just not a lucky man" would make a good chorus
So in love with this song ♥️♥️♥️
Like the fact that Winn Dixie's listening to Otis' troubles hehe

I couldn't figure out what "flipped the video" meant. Then I suddenly realized "Dave's not left handed, wtf."
Love Dave, glad he's from the chillest city in Virginia, Charlottesville.
Wonderful little movie and this scene and song are the high point, IMO.
One of my fave scenes in the movie.
Superb scene from Dave man that scene is just amazing!! Why did this song don’t make it to the soundtrack on the album? It might be a licensing thing or something. But I still absolutely love this song!! It gives me chills every time!❤😊
This is the way he should sing the song not just butterfly but with the story would be a great tune "
I'm not a bad man just not a lucky man"
This still moves me. Especially after he said three years....😢😢😢
Happiness is real, if shared.
Love this song!!!! Love because of Winn Dixie!!!!!😘😘💙💙💙🙆♀️🙆♀️🙆♀️
Tastes like music…
I felt that.
i remember watching this movie for the first time and saw him and i remember thinking, that looks a lot like dave.

Just Google Dave Matthews Butterfly tablature ...☝️💜
Is this a song he ever actually recorded or was this just for the movie? I love to listen to this song.
God I love him
He does a good job acting here
❤❤
What a good novie.
DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CHORDS OR HOW TO PLAY THIS ON GUITAR OT UKULELE? PLEASE I WOULD LOVE TO LEARN THIS BUT I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE
The guitar tab is on dmbtabs.com
it's D you should be able to figure the rest out from there
Just reminds me of me...David was an Improv actor back when the band was just starting to play together...☝️💜
:36 anybody know what chord that is? Sounds beautiful.
It's a guitar cord ;)
They are D shaped chords accompanied by hammer-ons on the D and G string
My heart❤❤❤
They've reversed the film...he's not a lefty..
Beej O'Dwyer noticed that immediately.
