My research hypothesis requires the frequency distribution to be the same between both independent samples; however, based on how the Mann-Whitney test defines the null (for both samples to have the same distribution), my research hypothesis is written as the null and NOT as the alternative. How can I resolve this issue?

Yeah I'm not sure why your research question is trying to find no difference between your independent samples? Typically you're looking for one independent variable to affect something. So you need to rewrite your hypothesis trying to find if an independent influences the results i.e. H1 do Males drink more than women H2 Do Women drink more than men? Ho Men and women drink the same
