  • In this episode of Synth Fundamentals, we tackle every synthesist's favorite sound: the pleasant chorusing of pulse width modulation.
We begin with a discussion of pulse waves and duty cycles, but quickly discover an equivalence with massive implications for PWM. Since a pulse wave can be created as the sum of saw & ramp waves, pulse width modulation is essentially an auditory illusion: two oscillator detune in a single oscillator.
Finally, we discuss what this means for your tuning and the musical consistency of your PWM patches.

Very nice breakdown of how PWM is simulated using saw / ramp waves. If you realize that a saw and ramp waves are merely the same wave but with phase polarity inverted, then this leads to another game-changing implication: take any static sample waveform, create a copy and flip its polarity, then detune those two against each other. Instant sample PWM. =)

A heartbeat, for instance, is also a pulse wave. Any periodic pulse is a pulse wave. Think of those electronic metronomes that click at lower speeds, but sound like a tone at faster speeds; the pulse doesn't change beyond getting re-triggered before the pulse finishes its cycle.

That LFO keyboard sync trick sounds awesome...now just have to figure out if I can do that on the Minilogue XD or microfreak as those are my current tools... 🤞

    A synthtuber with useful content.
If you are a beginner, this is something you should watch instead of
    "My new favorite Synth today"
    "Still relevant in two.days ago?"
    "Best Synth?"
"Why i sold my favorite synth from yesterday?"
"X vs y - no patches to compare"
    "My favorite factory patches"
"Masterclass - how to program a saw wave?"
"Why are you still a beginner 10 years later"?
Stop watching these gossip trash and learn your instrument.
