Another angle on Rykard's crimes is that in feeding himself and his part of the ring to essentially a "god snake," he was implying that he stood on the level of an Empyrean. A self-styled Empyrean would probably be a new level of blasphemy to piss the order off.
@@mykol4254 Right that's exactly it. For example, I was planning on ignoring that new Shogun show, assuming it would be a lame, GoT in Japan type thing. But with Madman's great in-depth analysis it's something I really want to watch
It checks out that the Golden Order would hate serpents, because the Ulcerated Tree Spirits are a huge pile of corpses that constitutes the flaws in their philosophy and look like snakes. Edit: Sen's Fortress stands for Sentinels' Fortress.
I think of the Godskins as the police left over from back when the Gloam-Eyed Queen ruled. They were her enforcers after helping defeat Placidusax and his god. They oversaw proceedings and kept the gods in line until Mr. Keth came and stole their mojo. The World-Devouring Snake has been around a long time, and could have certainly been allied with her (along with other factions like the Twinbird, Scarlet Scorpion, and Ancestors ). Most factions at the time highly valued the cycle of life and death while Placidude and his Ancient Dragon Cults are all about timeless immortality, so they were diametrically opposed.
In some mythologies snakes are symbols of rebirth and renewal. Golden order is basically stagnation to me so anything that that brings change could be seen as a threat?
@@TheHonoredMadmanEglė the serpent is also named after Baltic mythology story and as it happens snakes are symbol of rebirth in that mythology and cultures
The red serpent makes me think of the Prophecy of the Two Dragons Geoffrey of Monmouth gives the following account of Merlin’s interview with Vorigern and his wise men, “Who,” said the boy, “instructed you to do this?” “My wise men,” answered the king. “Order them hither,” returned the boy; this being complied with, he thus questioned them: “By what means was it revealed to you that this citadel could not be built, unless the spot were previously sprinkled with my blood? Speak without disguise, and declare who discovered me to you;” then turning to the king, “I will soon,” said he, “unfold to you every thing; but I desire to question your wise men, and wish them to disclose to you what is hidden under this pavement:” they acknowledging their ignorance, “there is,” said he, “a pool; come and dig:” they did so, and found the pool. “Now,” continued he, “tell me what is in it;” but they were ashamed, and made no reply. “I,” said the boy, “can discover it to you: there are two vases in the pool;” they examined, and found it so: continuing his questions, ”What is in the vases?” they were silent: “there is a tent in them,” said the boy; “separate them, and you shall find it so;” this being done by the king’s command, there was found in them a folded tent. The boy, going on with his questions, asked the wise men what was in it? But they not knowing what to reply, “There are,” said he, “two serpents, one white and the other red; unfold the tent;” they obeyed, and two sleeping serpents were discovered; “consider attentively,” said the boy, “what they are doing.” The serpents began to struggle with each other; and the white one, raising himself up, threw down the other into the middle of the tent, and sometimes drove him to the edge of it; and this was repeated thrice. At length the red one, apparently the weaker of the two, recovering his strength, expelled the white one from the tent; and the latter being pursued through the pool by the red one, disappeared. Then the boy, asking the wise men what was signified by this wonderful omen, and they expressing their ignorance, he said to the king,”
It’s explicitly mentioned that the Dusk (Gloam) -Eyed Queen raised the Godskins, so they are definitely connected. Tanith was eating Rykard in order to let him (or at least his essence) take over her body, so that he could live on and continue his goals.
This game has a TON of references to Norse mythology, as well as references to other religions like Christianity, so the snake symbolism is deep. The God-Devouring Serpent is clearly a reference to Jormungandr, and Messmer gives me huge Loki vibes, and Loki committed treason.
Man your videos are great. Listening to your videos feels like a conversation with a friend discussing games we like. Richard is fucking crazy. Truly the Elon Musk of the lands between.
Aye bro please keep making these videos, i feel like the more perspectives and people we have looking into this shit the more we understand. Its actually mind boggling how deep the lore is in this game, tarnished archeologists blew my mind with his videos. Its crazy how much story is told just from the architecture and environments. Bethesda needs to take notes!
Eglė the Queen of Serpents is a Lithuanian mythological fairy tale (pronounced egg-lay). It tells the story of a maiden who is tricked into being abducted and marrying a snake prince in an underwater cavern and bearing 4 children with him. She and the kids eventually convince the prince to let her visit her family topside, but her brothers are so upset by these events that they beat the kids to learn how to summon the snake prince and murder him with scythes. Eglė learns of this and is very sad, so she turns her children into aspen, oak, ash, and birch trees to match their Lithuanian names, and then turns herself into a spruce to match her own name.
With this tale in mind, it becomes more clear what the Temple of Eiglay is all about. It's a place where maidens were impregnated by Snykard to birth Rya and the rest of the man-serpents.
Really chill channel for when I want to relax and immerse in lore. Very interested in any info on the black flame cause that’s what my main character uses a lot
Love these vids man, you bring such a good and down-to-earth breakdown of lore and your theories. Feels like I'm at taco bell shooting the shit with my a freind. Goodshit man. Sorry if I'm rambling lol.
Small note serpent is likely female since she is named after a character from Baltic fairy tale Eglė žalčių karalienė, which is about a lady called Eglė in convoluted set of events marrying serpent king whom later was killed by her family.
Another banger as always madman, looking forward to the eventual Rya video. Ps, do you think her human name was chosen in honor of his mother? Her name is very similar to the naming scheme of rennala’s lineage after all.
If a TREE hates a SNAKE then it could call to Genesis; Adam, Eve and Lucifer The Serpent. Temptation? Well that’s what the Snake did to make God wipe away the Garden of Eden from man. And what if Trees felt animosity to the “Snake”😂😂. Felt used and abused just to be burned for another’s “mistake”, ik it’s out of there but it was a quick thought
lmfao. I bet the mage snake's head was too big to fit out of its egg, since its brain was bigger. The worship could be the similarity to forever emerging from its egg like Miquella
love using the venom fangs in pvp, its got a fun little synergy with poison infusion plus the kidrid of rot/mushroom crown doesnt have the nerf of its bloody brothers
With Messmer I'm really curious about the deal with his powers. Like if he's gotten powers from worshipping multiple Outer Gods or something is there a limit on that? Like would one God get jealous of another and remove their blessing on him? (Also, nice Pokémon Colosseum music at the end)
I think all the outer gods are different representations of the same being. Formless mother and the serpent are just 2 of the ways it uses to influence the lands between.
I don't think Rykard, Ranni, and Radagon were ever not aligned. They just have drifted apart as the millenia wore on. But during the Shattering my opinion is that those of the same family line would fight along each other. That it wasn't a full battle royale but divided between what branch of demigod they were.
Imagine that pep talk Rykard gave himself before doing it though? Must've thrown himself a pep rally with all his men and Tanith at the front. Eiglay hopefully shows in DLC A Serpent never dies he said

In my headcannon the snakemen are cursed. We know that placidusax was an Elden Lord, but was abandoned by their God. Satan betrayed God and fell from 'grace' in Christian theology, in my head cannon Messmer committed some sin, perhaps dragon communion.
