Pretty cool that affordable gear can get you this far.
We live in great times.
It's even easier to listen and transmit to outer space though, there is nothing but clouds in the way and basically line of sight most of the time. Terrestrial radio is harder because there are so many obstacles.
So I just started getting into amateur radio, and I'm already so in love with it. My daughter was home sick yesterday and I had recently gotten a new baby monitor for the new baby but hadn't set it up yet but decided to yesterday to keep an eye on my older one while she was in bed. Anyways, it turns out it was like a walkie talkie and I was able to talk to her as well as hear her too. Then I started looking into HAM radios and I've completely gone down the rabbit hole now. I'm going to get my tech license for sure, as well as my general and someday extra. So thank you for all of your videos and information. I love your channel!
I absolutely Love the Craft. I've been into it since a little kid. Very Koo and Interesting. I agree 👌 This RUclips channel is Awesome !
Do you have your technician's license? :) Must have update
I hope you got your license. I'm on the same Journey now 😊
Screw a license
Your channel and the links you put up are a huge asset for noobs like me. I've decided to get my license first, then settle on a radio & antenna after that. Thank you for the links, ideas, and clear explanations!
Thank you for posting this. We are studying for our ham licenses and my son really liked this video. We live off Hopewell. Looking forward to talking to you when we get our licenses! Thanks again - John
Great video. Just got my baofeng. Can’t wait to try this. Thanks for posting.
Love all your videos! You are one of my elmers!
I just discovered your RUclips channel today 3/15/2020. This is Awesome keep up the Good work and Kool videos 👌👌
Another great video!
Outstanding. Thank you.
Great to see another video. Since your last video on 50 things hams should do this year I made the first step by signing up to take my Basic license up here in Canada. Hope to make contact one day over the waves. Ive even made my own antenna using speaker wire that works quite well in the yard with my SDR/Baofeng for listening.
That’s great, good luck. Does Canadian Basic give you any HF privileges? Hope to catch you in the logbook.
@@HamRadioInAction If you score 80% or higher on the test you are given some HF privileges. Which is a Basic license with honors. I will be studying hard for that.
Kinda cool Brian! I always watch it going over. Maybe I need a radio.
Great video and infor, Thank you. Thank you.
Got a text that it will be visible tonight from Atlanta. Going to try and see and hear the ISS with the kids. Thank you for the video.
Hi Brian, after a very long time again with another awesome video. It's really fun listening to the ISS. By the way I got through my ASOC test conducted by the Ministry of Communication, Government of India. Currently on a vacation to Kolkata (Calcutta), will be applying for my licence next week once I am back in New Delhi.
You have been a great inspiration in Ham radio indeed!

That’s great. Was the test hard?
@@HamRadioInAction I had mentioned about the test in details in one of your RUclips videos. Yes, I found it tough since I come from altogether a different background. However, my ardent love for wireless communication and Ham radio from childhood has brought me here.

Hello Mr.Brandy, would you like to take a minute or two to explain the procedure to apply for the test. I followed a few links on Google, but I didn't find anything conclusive. Thanks, Harish
Thanks for sharing your love of radio with us and explaining the frequency. One RUclipsr I heard mentioned sad hams in his video, you definitely don't seem like one of these.
Very cool man
I love Milton's Ontario!!! I used to live by the Mill Pond!
This is awesome, I would like to get into ham radio myself someday, got a few things that need to come first, lol.
Thanks for the video! Very fun and informative! 73, Heath N4TWT Northeast Georgia Mountains
3:55 THAT’S WHAT I WAS LISTENING TO!!! I was using the mobile antenna and from my location, I could only listen to a small portion of this. Thank you so much!!! Did you record this on Monday?
INSIDE??!! Now you are just mocking me.. but seriously WELL done. This now a major goal.
that's so cool
You can also monitor ISS on frequency 437.800FM, as hams use it as a repeater to make contacts with each other though the conversations rarely last longer than 3-4 minutes as ISS flies past. I stand outside in the back yard with my UV5R and rubber duck antenna pick up the ham QSO's or connect the radio to a small yagi and "follow" ISS for a longer pass. For indoor reception the V dipole and SDR radio works great. I have yet to hear any of the ISS/school comms or receive SSTV from ISS.
You are like me I use so many antenna adapters
Very C00L Thank You for this so we could listen to it......
I managed to pick the Internation Space Station up using my Standard Baofeng UV17-Pro V2, operating with the normal antenna, but purchased a "VGOL", Standard Dual Band VHF UHF 136-520 MHz Foldable CS Tactical Antenna, and it is s much better it is unreal. Before using the foldable I would have poor comms and even FM band was lucky to pick more than 2-3 frequencies up in the UK. With the new foldable it hits just about every FM frequency in the UK available.
Plus, if extended and the Baofeng UV17-Pro V2 is left on auto detect on 145.800MHz then it gets loads more hits when the ISS is passing overhead in the UK.
Don't get me wrong it isn't the perfect antenna for the UV17 as it fits the screw but the antenna is about 1.5mm/2mm for the recessed input, so while it tightens up there is a slight gap on the top, so if you run that set up you may want to add additional O-rings to the top to support it as the standard washer sent out with the tactical foldable is just too big for the Baofeng UV17-Pro V2.
Hello, great video. I'm new to the whole Satellite thing. The split function is something new to me.
Question sir, I have my Baofeng UV-5R radio all programmed. I have the squelch set to zero. When I turn on the radio all I see is the Downlink Frequency in the upper menu. When I press the PTT button will I be transmitting on the Uplink? Will the radio and image program be handling that for me? I know about the doppler shift. Thank you for your time. Ernest Bazzinotti KC1LKB.
Well i guess you could set the uplink frequency on the 2nd band and turn TDR to ON and monitor both at the same time…
Ah I see. That's why I tried to listen to them each time they pass by but no incoming radio, they aren't on radio, yet!
Just random tone noise several times
Do you need the adapter and any particular settings set to listen to the downlink? I just have my UV-5R set to 145.8. Is that all I need? I have an ISS tracker, but it's usually out of range when I'm free to listen in.
Hey I have a baofeng uv-82 what exactly do I need to do to get that exact antenna set up you have ?
So i have a ws1010 scannee from walmart will that be able to work?
What are the best settings on the uv5r for listening to the iss?
I made contact with an astronaut on board the ISS once. He called me the N word and said he was going to drop human waste from the ISS on my house.
I want to get that Diamond antenna but sadly, it appears that Amazon does not delivers it in New Delhi. Any suggestions please where to get this antenna?
73
you can get it at SHOPEE PHILIPPINES check it out! it would be delivered by a ninja van or by the JNT courrier right to your doorsteps.
Hello! I'm in Ga also! I've been trying to hear the ISS but every time it comes by I hear nothing but static.
They have scheduled events, mostly with schools. Find those at ariss.com. Otherwise a licensed astronaut may just make some contacts during their free time, which is pretty rare. I scan the ISS voice frequency just in case.
Hey there. I have an UV82 with a Nagoya 771 like yours. I have been trying to listen to ISS for several weeks but i have never caught a signal. Tried 2.5Khz lower and upper of 145.800 Mhz but no success. Just i learned today my antenna is not original, it is fake. Do you think it can be the cause of my problem? What do you suggest to check out? TA3AIV 73.
Can i be able to listen the ISS astronauts with baofeng uv 9r plus?
Hi can you still listen to the iss with the equipment you use?thanks
What is on the base of your antenna.
How come you can only hear one side of the conversation?
well, how did you receive the iss signals at inside the walls?
Keyifli Yollar exactly what I am asking
Which is the listening frequency?
So is this an ongoing thing with the ISS onboard staff, broadcasting in HAM bands? What are the Freqs and is there a schedule of when they broadcast? Where can this info be found as kept current?
It’s just incredible how ignorant some people can be. I’m truly disgusted.
Fucking awesome
And what antenna is that?
Que antena es esa?
VERY NICE VIDEO MY FRIEND. AMATEUR RADIO IS AMAZING!!¡¡!! ENJOY 😉 "W2KX"
How come you are able to listen from indoor?
what kind of antenna is that?
Why don’t you show how you did it
Do you know if the Tenway ham radio has the same ability to listen in like the baofeng does in this video?
not familiar with that radio, but if it can receive FM on 145.80 you could listen. The antenna is a diamond, link in description.
@@HamRadioInAction thank you, whould love if you could do a video on a Tenway ham radio. They are affordable and comes quickly in the mail even in this pandemic. Be safe.. Best Regards
waaoh. i have one question tho. can you talk to them or can you only hear them?
The kids were talking to them. I was too far away to hear their transmissions. Occasionally a licensed ham onboard will make random contacts with hams on earth.
Recived them today on 145.000mhz. With a hand held scanner a woman astronaut. Talking about space
Simple answer since these things are so cheap, have one to listen to the ISS, one to the guy on the ground.
is that an RH771 antenna?
How come even if I have the iss at an 88 degree angle above me I cant hear them
They are not talking
@@justsomedude4660 yeah but I cant listen either
There’s no transmit or you aren’t picking up I see people using directional antennas but it seems a ground mobile handheld can pick it up inside a home.. so maybe they aren’t transmitting
Very Good Video Thank You. 73 KI7DYM
How different is Ham from CB radio?
CB radio is a very small part of the spectrum and is limited to about 4-5 watts of power. Depending on what band you are on HAMs can use up to 1500 watts. CBs typically have a range of 2-4 miles while HAMs can communicate around the world, and as you can see, even into space.
Can you listen to the ISS anytime or can you only hear it because the astronauts are doing something with the school?
Planned activity with school. But they have been known to make random contacts on their free time.
Iss freequency?
145.800 narrow band
is this still possible?
Yes
Woah that awesome every cool! Can anyone do this?
Yeah, anyone with a radio can listen in. This was on Monday. I randomly picked up on this when scanning through my saved frequencies while driving.
furonwarrior ok lol thank you so much.
They have an app and website of when they are passing over
O'D yeah those apps are pretty cool
are you related to George Clooney ?
😆 George Looney Tunes
It looks like you're still using your Baofeng after all -- just not transmitting, I guess -- after the videos red-flagging them for spurious emissions.
Well, there are thousands of people still using them, nobody can stop it, but also, nobody can really tell unless they have expensive gear or equipment to detect the difference between a Baofeng and an FCC approved radio from a major vendor.
its not the uv-5r he has.
73
Instead off a cheap boafeng radio get a yeasu. That wot I use as a licensed operator
Good but please join a gym
You got a callsign?
@@HamRadioInAction no he lives in his mothers basement.
Good but STFU.
