I was 14 yrs old and in the stands that day. The crowd was so loud.
What year was this?
That’s crazy I was 14 when I saw Steph curry play live in college. Goat shooters
I was around negative -6 or -7
Wow
49 points before the 3pt line..unbelievable
You know, Larry always thinking ahead used the free throw line as his 3pt line🤣

Agree
Read up on Pistol Pete Maravich and his NCAA career record points back in the 70s which was only just beat by Caitlin Clark. Pete averaged something like 37 points a game and that was before the 3 point line existed, and freshmen weren't allowed to play so his record was for three years. I'll never not respect what Caitlin Clark did, but it just shows how much more impressive Pistol Pete's stats were and they existed so many decades.
@@wkarnofel634 How many shot attempts did they had
This is the 1st time I ever saw Bird play. He became my favorite player immediately.
There was very little TV coverage back then, especially for non major teams.
The first college game I ever went to live was Creighton hosting Indiana State. Didn't know much about Bird going in. Witnessed greatness that night.
...AND 17 REBOUNDS.
Larry Bird is the real GOAT.
Carrying Indiana St all the way to the NCAA finals and winning every game along the way is the single most impressive feat ever performed in college basketball.
Yes it is
Had to be a fantastic time to be a student at Indiana State. Small school competing on same level as the blue boods.
It sure was!!!!
Looking back at Larry’s stats in college its no wonder he outshines both Magic and MJ. Not even close. Larry was the total package. He made his team better.
Larry Bird had a 660-237 record in his career.
larry bird assists 5,695
Magic Johnson had a 670-236 record in his career.
Magic Johnson assists 10,141
Larry Bird has 3 Championship, 2 Finals MVP, 3 Regular Season MVP, 1 Rookie of the Year, 1 Hall of Fame, while Magic Johnson has 5 Championship, 3 Finals MVP, 3 Regular Season MVP, 1 Hall of Fame.

@@franagustin3094 you are right Larry is better at losing with a record of one more loss then Magic.
Larry was underestimated by *someone* his whole career…only to prove, conclusively, that in the end, he was the GOAT.
Without theatrics, without athleticism, without stat padding & ring chasing. Never backed down, never said quit, never gave less than 110%.
Wanting to see Francine’s in play is like a drug for young basketball fans. But if one can ween himself off of that need, Bird emerges the GOAT.
Larry Bird was underestimated by EVERYONE his whole career including YOU! Everybody except Me.
Uh...all that right there....is athleticism.
@@Dr.ScatKohlenblo-nj2cv I played in college. I've studied the game for decades. Birds hand eye coordination is second to nobody. His ability to process information instantly and execute the "right move" in real time is literally supernatural. He was so completely in sync with his surroundings that his physical shortcomings were irrelevant. I've only seen glimpses of it... Time moved different for him. Other athletes occasionally visit this mental space called "the zone"...the very best can get there frequently...Larry Bird lived there. A player perpetually in the zone.
@@steveguse4481 So well said. Agree 💯
Dude saved the NBA !
From the heart of basketball country. Bird was the real deal.
Watching him live was unreal 🐦glad I grew up on this bball 💯, we miss ya larry ❤
Playing like the man who's getting ready to come in and crush the NBA.
I was in 8th grade in 1979 and knew he would be great in nba, celtic fan . Brady was awesome too but there is no way he was better than bird in their sports ....2024 is only their 2nd 60 win season since they averaged 60 wins from 1980 to 88
Nzinn73 man what a player. He could really run at this point, before the injuries started to accumulate. His shot looks a bit different, this is prior to his index finger injury.
Yeah it annoys when he's called slow, he wasn't crazy quick but before his back injury he wasn't slow by any means
This was before the 3 pt line mind you. His skills were undefined. He could play in any era because his fundamentals were impeccable. He scored on every spot on the floor and rebounded immaculately. As a defended a made a mistake...even off ball, you paid. Loved that Hick from Lick🏀
Look at that pass right off the bat after the tip.
BIRD BIRD BIRD IS THE WORD
Never acted like a prima donna but he was always the star👍🐐👍
Larry is THE MAN
My father went to Central Michigan University in 79 and he always tells me how Larry Bird came to town and dropped 50 points on the Chippewa’s. Keep in mind their was no 3 point line back then! Yikes 😮
We were all young, thin, full head of hair, & nothing could stop us. Now we are 74, added 5 pounds & a small solar panel on my head.
Remember watching this on TV and couldn't believe it.
Dude was out there Makin it look easy
Bird has always been chided for his slow footwork. “He can’t run”. Sure looks quick to me. Thing is I think that being one step ahead, no hesitation, seeing the court and confidence always transfers to a type of quickness.
Think smarter not run harder.
Genius stuff with Larry Bird. Just genius.
I lived in Southern Indiana, about 40 miles from French Lick, and Louisville, Ky. NBC affiliate WAVE-TV broadcast to us. So naturally, they brought Larry's network TV debut to French Lick and the surrounding area -- wrong. Kentucky was playing at South Carolina that day, and WAVE had to choose one game or the other. They infuriated Southern Indiana viewers to keep the longtime, well heeled UK crowd happy.
1:44 mark. Larry makes a fake pass over the defenders head. The defender turns around and takes a step or two trying to find the ball leaving Larry plenty of time to square up and shoot. This is a great fake Larry learned from one of the folks who used to play ball with Larry at one of the several outside courts in French Lick & West Baden (French Lick and West Baden are two small towns separated by a single train track). There is a Great book just released, "As If By Magic" by Randy Mills that takes you back to Larry's basketball days at Springs Valley High School. It's a highly researched book with great, fun stories. Amazon, etc..
Talk about a complete team player, I emphasize team player, complete basketball skills and smart, focused player, one of the best ever, imagine Bird and Pistol Pete Maravich together in their prime, just so exciting to watch...gg, Tampa Florida
He was introduced at 6'9" and a half, which is definitely correct. Just don't think I'd ever heard it before. He is a tall 6'9" though.
WICHITA State has had their own superstars, but none in Bird's class.
Larry put ISU and Terre Haute on the map in a positive light. He was amazing!
Many of his shots were without his feet even being set. He'd just kind of toss it up before he OR the defensive player was ready.
If there was a Wizard of Oz and he could get LeFlop a heart, he might enter the discussion as on the same level as Larry.
and 17 rebounds
Remember..1st national game
Bird was a bad boy
Notice there was no 3 pt line back then, also the most amazing thing is, back then there was no shot clock and most college games ended in the 30s or 40s in points because they just passed the ball around, very boring. Then came Bird, Johnson, Thomas and a few others that just didn't play that way. To me those players changed not only the NBA, but transformed college basketball forever.
30s or 40s: statistics don't support that. 1971-1972 Indiana St.
PS/G: 78.2 (110th of 221)
PA/G: 79.5 (145th of 221)
I think this dude is going to be a great basketball player and a future hall of famer…
please tell me why did the bulls led by jordan lose 3-0 in the 86 and 87 playoffs to the bird led celtics
@Deborah T thanks for the info and that makes sense
There's no coincidence that Jordan started winning in the 90s......
you make sense
He never lost to Jordan. MJ has 63 pts and lost to Celtics Bird☘️🏀37 pts
@@RonFly824 i didn't know AND/OR forgot the total was 37 points for larry bird in that game in my OPINION larry bird wasn't quite as legendary as michael jordan and in my OPINION the 96 bulls weren't quite as legendary as the 86 celtics
Has anyone ever researched how many points Bird would have with the current three-point line? I think a lot of those would have been 3s.
And no three point line....can you imagine the numbers?
Wichita should have doubled him with their best defenders. He still probably would have scored 49, or more, as hot as he was here, but at least they would have looked a little smarter.
If he's doubled, he passes. And he's always moving even without the ball.
please give me your rankings for legend larry bird between springs valley high indiana state and the celtics
Bird😊
Bird lacks "feet quickness" - lol... don't forget he can't jump and he's too slow - but he had the heart of a lion....
Larry had a slow start in this game and still.
49 points... No 3 point line
Why is the video resolution so blurry?
Gee, I wonder. perhaps because it's 40 years old?
Foggy lens
@@garthdrake3220 That's not it. I just watched a movie on yt from 1956. Clear as a bell~! I think it has something to do with the Nba
Because this is was recorded on a VCR 40 years ago. Because VHS tape degrades over time. Maybe because this might have been the fourth time this particular video cassette was re-recorded over. And maybe because it probably was taped at the lowest recording quality setting to make sure the entire game would fit on the tape.
Good moves here, he was picked 6th overall, yes 6th! Despite having 15+ 40 point games.
He was picked after these guys and prospects:
1 1 Mychal Thompson F/C Bahamas Portland Trail Blazers (from Indiana)[a] Minnesota (Sr.)
1 2 Phil Fordx G United States Kansas City Kings (from New Jersey)[b] North Carolina (Sr.)
1 3 Rick Robey F/C United States Indiana Pacers (from Buffalo via Portland)[a] Kentucky (Sr.)
1 4 Micheal Ray Richardson+ G/F United States New York Knicks (from Houston via Buffalo and New Jersey)[c] Montana (Sr.)
1 5 Purvis Short
He was a junior eligible, but he was going back to Indiana State for another year, so the other teams didn't want to pick him and have to wait a year to sign him.
At the time, one didn't have to leave college if drafted. Today, one does. That's why Bird fell to 6th. If he was coming out of college, he would have gone higher.
As a senior in high school, Larry Bird was picked 3rd in the Mr. Basketball voting. Ever heard of Steve Collier? He won Mr. Basketball in 1974. He can always tell his grandchildren he was two notches above Larry Bird. But that's the life of Larry. He came out of nowhere, over and over. Dropped out of IU because it was big and impersonal to him. Then dropped out of a small college. So some NBA coaches believed he might not be right for the hyper-speed life in the pros.
@@805Bruin Red knew better.
I believe there have been interviews from other GMs who wanted to take him that year. The only problem was you had to set aside the money for a top draft pick like him and the other owners couldn't afford to do that for a player who wouldn't play for a year. Fortunately for Red and Boston, that wasn't a problem.
The Hick from French Lick.
Look out...
You ought to see the final four game v Arkansas where Larry tripped the ark. player in a way that the ark player got called for traveling and Larry got to make the final shot and win... he knew it wasn't about fairness and it was about the money game against magic Johnson... see, college has been pro way before PLANdemic...
Lebron isnt even the greatest SF of all time, let alone goat. Sorry bronsexuals 😂
Well Bron at the same age dropped 52 on Milwaukee in the NBA!
Lebron is better than larry
Matthew Liu that’s just false
Bird would destroy Bron. Sorry.
They are both fantastic players, in their own way. Bird did not have today's technology, he aged too fast. He drank a lot and didn't take care of his body. He probably didn't eat well like today's athletes do. He was very athletic and could jump the first couple of years of his career, but it took a huge toll on his body. After the first couple of years, he relied on smart basketball play, position, faking players out. He could never outjump anyone after the first few years of his career. LeBron is a freak of nature, that's all there is too it, and also a great passer and in amazing shape. He takes care of himself, takes a few days off to relax and rest his body.
