    The number of garage sales in upstate NY is down 60-75% compared to 2019. Town wide sales that would have 50-60 sales every year pre-2019 now have maybe 15-20... and more and more what is for sale tends to be goodwill bins level junk. I barely even bothered going to any this year.

    Hey Mike,
    I live just outside of Tucson surrounded by high end retirement communities and our season starts mid September/beginning of October running through May. I keep a rather large death pile that more than sustains me throughout the absolute misery of summer. I do keep a sharp eye out on estate sales year round and also source and sell on Nextdoor.
    Kevin has really upped his game in the decorative glass realm.
    Love the content.

    Hey Mike! I noticed you’ve been getting a lot of negative feedback for some reason. How do you deal with that? I think from your photos and videos, one of the most in depth descriptions.
    Also, I think you’re one of the most real eBay/amazon people that make videos.

      Most are people who try to scam me. I just got one removed from there due to LIES they told. It's the same old thing with so many of these. I personally really don't look at it much. My 4600 plus positive feedback speak for me. People realize that many people are never satisfied. I just keep lisiting.

    Very few garage sales in my area this summer. People (1) are holding onto their stuff because of the high cost of replacement, and (2) are not doing any due to the fear of crime. I know that's true for me and my friends.

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  7 дней назад

      I think that is true. People aren't replacing as much. I think that the cost of JEANS for example are way up so keeping the ones you have around a bit longer.

      @@goldenstatepicker Yes sir. Last I ate there, was at a Raleigh location, but they're all over the state. Having family in Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Ashville, & Todd, I spent a considerable amount of time in North Carolina, in my younger years.
      Interestingly, my father, now retired was also a Coastie. Most of his career was based in the Midwest on the Great Lakes, but he spent some time in Alameda, CA., as well as Buffalo, NY., Yorktown, VA., & Key West, FL.
      I think he fancied the idea, that I should have gone the route of OCS... Officer Candidate School. However, life took me down a different, but equally rewarding path. Good luck to your son-in-law. The USCG is an awesome branch in which to serve. Semper Paratus... Always Ready. :)

    It's not quite that black and white, but I basically agree. I have been collecting and selling books (esp first editions) since the late 1970s. You are correct that 1st printing IS the desirable one, and esp with no price clipping. But condition is EVERYTHING, especially the dust jacket (meaning intact, without chipping, tears, toning etc.). It's not just the numbers, esp for Silmarillion, which came out after Tolkien's death and was well publicised (so people were looking for it in 1977). I just sold a 1st edition, 7th printing on eBay for $40, and it was price clipped. I documented it all and explained it in my description so it was clear, but it was also pristine otherwise, and the map was attached (usually it's torn, absent, or detached) -- again condition is everything, it's not just numbers. In addition, later printings of Tolkien have value. Even 1960s editions can be in the $100s -- depending on condition. It's helpful to compare pricing OUTSIDE eBay, esp for antiquarian bookstores on line. That's really your competition for collectible editions.

    • @goldenstatepicker
      @goldenstatepicker  7 дней назад +1

      I was giving a GENERAL over view of 1st edition. Like everything condition of a GOLF club is also a factor for what it sells for. I was really trying to help people under stand it can say FIRST PRINTING but you have to look a bit farther. Many thanks for watching.

    I have a question for you, Mike. How is it that some sellers on eBay are able to sell books for $3.50 with free shipping, when media mail costs $4.68 or so? I literally got some free books that I can't sell because the same books are being sold at a buck less than it would cost me to even ship 'em! What kind of anti-competitive voodoo is this? Money laundering, maybe? The books are just going to end up in the dumpster, because there's no room on my "death pile" for albatrosses. It's a sad state of affairs when your ROI on $0 is a negative integer! If you know what's up, please elucidate.

    • @JewelsNcrime
      @JewelsNcrime 7 дней назад

      I'm not Mike but I do know some companies have a business account with the post office which gives them the ability to offer free or a cheaper rate to their customers. Also some listings bring such a huge profit sellers can list other stuff with free shipping and it doesn't hurt them financially. Though the book is only 3.50 most buyers will buy other things making a $3.50 sale into a $50 dollar sale. I agree with you about sellers selling stuff dirt cheap, it grinds my gears. Tip , always always be sure to comp before picking up even if it's free,don't wait until listing time to discover some idiot is selling it on eBay or Mercari for 10 cents with free shipping and a bonus $50 gift card. Lol.
