- www.fuzzyfoliag... Want an easy way to keep your African violets watered? Try wick watering! The wick (string) sucks up the water from a reservoir, meaning you don't need to water as often.
Things you'll need:
- An African violet
- A pot
- Synthetic string (mason line, kite string, yarn, etc.) No cotton or silk!
- A reservoir (deli container, baby food jar, margarine tub) with holes cut in the lid
- Light potting mix (1/2 peat or "African violet mix" and 1/2 perlite)
- Water
Very helpful information! I love that you use the clear container with a lid on it as a reservoir, absolutely genius. Thanks for the info :)
The dish detergent breaks down the surface tension, enabling the cord to wick better.
How long do you leave the wick in the water/soap solution before before being able to use them?

@@rebekah3483 ~ You just soak long enough to wet it through.
@@damesaphira9790 thanks!
Great explanation! I have used a loop turner when putting wicks in larger plant pots before going on vacation.
Exactly what I need to set up my self watering African Violet pot! Great information, thanks!
Hi, This video is just what I was looking for. I've always bought an african violet that looked good at the garden center and watered, let it dry out , and die. I had no idea about this wicking technique. I've never seen a varigated leaf one. I'll give it a try. Thanks
Thanks, thanks, thanks, for your videos on African Violet care. My experiences with violets have always been hit or miss. Mainly miss. After watching this video, I am starting to finally have some luck. You are definitely right about the need for perlite. I have even started using the 50/50 African violet mix and Perlite combination for the gloxinias with success.
the best watering solution ..THANK YOU!!!!!!
I bought a divider caliper and would appreciate you demonstrating HOW you use it to cut the holes out in the container. I've been tracing with a marker with the pot on the lid around the base of the pot and puncture starter holes but I have to use a regular scissors to cut the holes so please demonstrate here how you use the tool to cut the holes. Thanks! :-)
That crochet hook tip is really useful!!
Very informative and understandable.
Very helpful and informative. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, thanks so much! I had no clue what wick watering was and now I do :)
Thank you so much for this video, because I've just figured out why my attempts at wick irrigation were always disastrous. The wicks were of cotton.I will now try your idea of nylon wicks. And, the detergent, it acts as a wetting agent. Try a crystal of potassium permanganate in the water as an algae deterrent.
Thanks for this vid. It’s very helpful. Especially the crochet hook advice!
he u killin me when u say your gonna tthrow tose babby plants throwem this way lol
Great ideas and video. That divider probably can be bought at a home improvement store.
great idea first time I have seen this will definitely try. thanks
Many thanks for the tutorial it is very informative
Soap makes water wetter. So, adding a minute amount of soap helps the water move through the wick.
the soap helps the capillary action and helps prevent algae
soap decreases surface tension of water. It's less likely to form beads and will soak into the wick better.
I just replied to you below lol.... Measurements for use with African violets are on the bottle... I don't have the bottle handy at the moment. ;) My soil mix is half African violet mix, and half perlite, as I said in the video.
really awesome video... tnx very much for sharing. Btw, your reservoir should be jet black if possible, reason being no light should ever get to the water otherwise algae is certain to appear.
Great explanation. Thank you for teaching others.
I really like all your videos - very informative and fun :) Thank you.
I have a question: how do you avoid rusty buildup on top of the soil? My soil (perlite + AV mix) turns almost brown within few weeks. Is there a way to do something about it?
Yes, you mix the physan in with the fertilizer. there is no "rule" on which fert to use, if you have one working good for you, by all means keep using it!! :)
Remember to check the top of the soil the next day to be sure that the wick is successfully transporting the water.
Great video which actually teaches! My questions: what kind of fertilizer do you use, and do you know about hobbyists who deal with hard water or water with a lot of minerals. I have read that some people resort to aquarium water products and have been successful from AV magazine but they don't tell you how, what, etc. You should start a blog and be the "go to" person for African Violets! Not too much with real content that I have been able to find.......
my african violets rot to much because i water from the top and then i tried your technique and it works! it worked but then i use wool and i haven't watered it in a month and now it's beginning to bloom
Great idea I use soda bottles I cut in half because I'm a cloner . Yours looks nicer tho
Muchas gracias! Have a good upcoming week.
so are you saying that I'm the first person who ever wick rolled someone?
Brilliant idea. Thank you for sharing.
Do you not find algae growth in your watering container if you are putting in nutrients in the clear water container? I recall that all algae needs to grow is nutrients, sunlight and water.
Taesu Yi try a penny in the water.....copper and algae don’t mix :)
@kidneys3 --It's a miniature, it will always be in that size pot.
And you have some great specimens - I need to find a better supplier in SF Bay area!
Love your videos !
@muslimsahibtorun Algae can form but it really doesn't hurt anything, just doesn't look pretty.
OK. You use the Physan 20 in the water with the fertilizer? Wow. MSU is a fertilizer developed by Michigan State University that is really good for orchids. I have more orchids than African violets (only 10 AV). The MSU formula is used widely. I get mine from Repotme. I have been using it and really am satisfied with it. The violets seem to be doing well with it. I really am a novice. Thanks.
Measurements for use with African violets are on the bottle... I don't have the bottle handy at the moment. ;)
Noticed you use small plastic pots . Do you like to have your African Violets root bound ?
Thank you for this video. I put all my african violets wick watering and they looks happy. I have a question, why the wick or the water( not sure) smell some strong after few days they are water. I wash the container and rinse the piece of the wick tha comes out of the pot every time I put new water. Thanks. Luisa.
How do you use the Divider Caliper? Can you add a piece to show us? Thanks!!
this was helpful
thank you very much for this information. much appreciated.
thanks for sharing, beautiful and constructive!
Great idea thank you for sharing.
@falinx101 PS: Algae is ugly, but won't hurt the plant.
Nice tips, Thanks , how much Physan 20 do you use? Do you make your own AV soil and what type of fertilizer do you use? MSU?
@muslimsahibtorun Not really sure what you mean.. I didn't say I change the water, I just refill it (ie: top it off). The plant absorbs it, so it needs to get refilled. :-)
Awesome! Do you have any advice for Powdery Mildew?
You are my new violet guru! Three questions anserre
Do you put the fertilizer in the water or in the soil?
In the water
thanks. this worked for me.
Wonderful tutorial- thanks so much!! :)
Thank you for sharing more information. What is the best way to wick full grown plants you buy? I heard the soapy water removes a lot of residue the rope may have and allows for better wicking. Don't know if this is totally accurate but make sense.
I tried this with 4-inch clay pots (mature AV's), and I believe that the plants are getting too much moisture. I also transferred them all outside (high humidity here in the South) . The fertilizer/water solution gets absorbed within a day sometimes, and the plants already had too much moisture. I'd re-potted with 1/2 perlite and 1/2 AV potting mix. Question: Is this method meant to be used with smaller plants, and smaller plastic pots? Thanks for your demo!
Great video! Thank you. Any alternative tool for cutting plastic you might recommend?
I use a soldering iron to melt holes or cut plastic.
You can even use a large needle held over a flame ( using pliers ) and a candle.
Like a knife through butter.
Sorry- 3 questions answered thanks!
Do you rinse the soap off the nylon before planting? Thanks for the video! :)
so did i . didnt work for me so i got a saudering iorn it does a great job lots better than scissors
thank you for this video
Good tips, can we do that on my orchards pot???
Dunno, never grew orchids. Sorries!
NOOOO...LOL...NO. ORCHIDS CANNOT DEAL WITH THE CONTINUOUS WATERING..INSTEAD WET THE WOOD CHIPS AROUND THE ROOT.
@falinx101 I just use Physan 20 in my water and don't get algae in the first place.
@m3rma1d yup i know wat you mean by the plants absorbs it...im doing sub irrigation for my african violet...wat im concern about is, since the water stays stagnant as it waits for the plant to aborbs it. Will there be side effects? As we know stagnant water will result in things like bateria, fungial or even alge growth which could lead to diesease that attack the african violet roots. Sorry im very new to all these. I jus got my african violet last week...lol...1st plant 1st time planter... :)
my question is one drop of dish detergent to HOW MUCH water? Just what's in the cup?
@tmc200527 Glad you found it helpful! Check the blog for lots more African violet videos and tips!
I have had good results since wicking my many violets a year ago. Should I give them a dry period as some of my violets seem quite moist. Also, about how much water should I put in my reservoir ( if I should be giving them a dry time)? Thank you!
Isnt it bad to leave stagnant water.....you said you that you change water like 3 weeks
Great tip. Thanks! :-)
How long does the wick need to sit in the water/soap solution before before being able to plant with it?
Where did you buy the rob's zippidy doo African violet if you remember by any chance
it's a Lovely Plant
I can Only Grow Mold =(
I have a store bought African violets that has many buds. I want to use the wicking system for it. Do I need to discard the soil the plant came in and use the special soil-less mix that you recommended? Thanks for answering my earlier question.
Yes. Lighten the mix with half perlite. :)
Best is mail ordering from Lyndon Lyon!!! Google or facebook them!!!!!! THEY RULE!
Hmmm...good point! :-)
Not sure what "MSU" means?
Awesome, informative...thanks! ^_^
Where do you buy the tiny plastic pots?
what kind of dish soap do you use?
how many wicks should I use for a 16 oz solo cup?
Yarn did not work for me.
You mentioned half perlite and half AV soil. I can’t get the AV soil . What can I substitute it with? Thanks
Whatever sphagnum moss-based potting mix you can find, mixed half & half with perlite will do.
Good info... too many ums
Rob's is what I meant
@cja0071 yep.
Where does on get the tubs and how did you make holes? What are tub dimensions?
Sharon & Steve Schutjer She showed and told both in the video. You could reuse any clean container with a lid. She used a deli container.
How much water do you fill up and how often?
When it needs it, top off.
I don't go to delis so where else would I get those kind of reservoirs
Amazon. Sometimes dollar stores.
What is the name of your Blog?
Rob's
I enjoyed this sassy, naughty video.
