I loved this little video and out came my knitting needles. Knitting helped me quit smoking when I became pregnant with my first child over 40 years ago. It kept my hands busy. I, too, was taught as a small child, but it was the impending baby that got me going again. Still at it at 70 years old. Lovely little video!
I've been to Newfoundland four times and each time I go I buy something from NONIA. I have a beautiful selection of hand knit mitts. Love that province and love the people.
I love NFLD. Been there 8 times. I saw a story about the knitters with NONIA. I ordered and paid for a pair of gloves to be sent to me down here in Pennsylvania. They were of such fine quality that I felt that I had not paid enough for such fine knitting. I sent them additional money. The gloves are a treasure of mine. Thank you so much for my lovely gloves.
Hi from the UK, what a lovely story Canadian Knitters! My Scots Grandma taught me how to knit, I'm still knitting at 82, Aran blankets these days. Keep going you amazing knitters.
This is so beautiful❤ i bought - or chose, as a gift from my parents - my first cable knit turtle neck sweater from NONIA. I adored it. I still adore it, though I have no idea what ever happened to it. I have moved a LOT and somewhere along the way…. but it planted a seed for the love of knitting. NONIA is such an awesome organization; I am so glad you continue to operate. To me, you’re synonymous with Newfoundland, and with women’s resilience on our rocky shores. ❤❤❤
Thank you for a charming and fascinating film. I’d not heard of Nonia before. My Mother taught me to knit and I’ve been enjoying this wonderful craft for 61 years now. I would recommend knitting to anyone - it’s just so enjoyable and fulfilling.
My mother in law had been a knitter most of her life, in 2018 she declared that due arthritis she could no longer knit. She had a vast collection of yarn. I was just going on vacation, so I asked her if she would wait till I got back and then we would do something with it. So, when I got back I emailed a few retirement homes in my hometown of Woodbridge, Ontario. Only 1 answered, in Pine Grove, Ont, a hamlet within the Woodbridge, Ontario area. Got mother together and all the yarn, there was two large garbage bags full..The ladies at the home were begging the staff for something to do, this came at a great time for them...they got the yarn, and they give it out to the ladies to knit, they knit mostly childrens' wear, hats, scarves, mitts, gloves, blankets...after which the articles are donated to womens' shelters...its the gift that keeps on giving...
Yay for wool, knitting, and Newfoundland! I hope to make it north of the border someday soon to get myself some local yarn to knit, and explore your lovely lands!
You are a wonderful lady! At our senior center we have a group we gather once a week we knit crochet and loom hats scarves baby blankets for the homeless and hospitals. We are called the yarners.
I visited Newfoundland for the first time in the spring, and remember visiting Nonia! So wonderful to learn about the process behind the goods. The wool mitts are second to none!
I knit for NONIA back in the 60s....I can't imagine how anyone could live on the money they paid out. I particularly remember knitting a baby christening dress with an allover pattern of fine baby yarn and getting $3.50 for it.
My mother used to knit for NONIA in the early 70s. She used to knit the fisherman sweaters. They didn't pay her a lot, certainly nowhere near the amount they sold those sweaters for in their shop. But we all had those sweaters growing up, since she knew the pattern by heart.
@@jjherrell I knit those traditional "fisherman's gansey" sweaters myself, for friends and family...done all in one piece with individual patterns for each person. Great fun for me. I'm sure your Mom enjoyed working on them for her family too!
I am a tailor by trade stitched all day night all night companies'and people in general don't want to pay a Fair price I was told many times it's only two seams and a hem 😂
Fantastic we need this all around the world to open up a shop for knitted things get every one knitting if its warm countrys can knit cotton things I love knitting I love this lady what a beautiful soul great video hope to see more I am from England
A lot of their products are available online. Newfoundland and Labrador is such a beautiful place, maybe you can ask him too take you on his next work trip.
NONIA is pretty great! In the US there is the Knitting Guild Association, you could probably reach out to them and see if there are any similar knitting programs in your area.
I'm in the US, and there are plenty of opportunities for volunteer Knitter's. Not sure of paid knitting. Knitted Knockers is a great program (knitting breast prostheses). Our church ladies knit/crochet hats for homeless people.
For being a non profit they sure don’t pay those wonderful ladies very much and their goods are very high. Most things for adults are sold out on their website.
How I wish I could find Aran patterns like those here. I knit many when I lived in England, I brought them to Canada with me but I have since become very allergic to wool (mine were all knitted in the oiled wool) I gave them all away years ago. They were such fun to knit.

I am also from PA and have had the please to visit Newfoundland (just once though). Small world. I would love to take my own children someday.
Oh my…. What a wonderful thing to do for those with little other options. And the knitted things are just beautiful.
Wonderful look into what makes Newfoundland and Labrador a fantastic place to live. Hats off to these lovely ladies . God Bless our Canada.
This wonderful, hardworking, resourceful, artistic woman deserves the recognition she has received from your organization and HM.
this is a total gem of a lady!! I would love to own a sweater made by her! She lives in a lovely home with beautiful view.

Wow, her husband was my age when he died - 56 😮 He sure was handsome. I'm so sorry you lost him that early 😢
Just like my Grandmothers used to make😁
NONIA, is it still in business and do they have a catalog, or do mail order? Love this idea.
You can shop on their website! nonia.com/shop/

Me too…… if I sit……I knit. 🤭
