I am 69 end of October I was 14 when I met the King of Kool Steve McQueen. He was filming the bayou scenes for Nevada Smith n 1965. The crew were staying at a hotel near my house n Baton Rouge Louisiana. My friend and I were riding our bikes at the rear of the Belmont Hotel just happened to be riding near his room he walked out with a Havana Cigar and asked us to ride elsewhere and lower the racket so he could rest. He was very nice about it and it took me a minute but I figured out who he was. I was n awe and couldn't wait to tell my mom who also had to take a second to take it all n. Just an innocent situation as a lucky kid.. Never forgot that moment n time.

McQueen, by all accounts, had a tough childhood. One thing about him, though, as an adult, he was always kind to kids. Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers told the story of a baseball hitting the windshield of McQueen's Jaguar in the studio parking lot. McQueen took it all in stride and basically them "don't worry about it, boys. I was a kid once myself." Pretty classy. But to fellow adults, McQueen was known not to be so tolerant or nice.

Robinson as a "Golden Age" legend and McQueen a "next generation" legend guaranteed a great film, but when you have Karl Malden, Ann Margret, Rip Torn, Tuesday Weld, Jack Weston and Joan Blondell as your supporting characters there was no way it wasn't going to be a classic.

Robinson is not a Golden age legend, no way. Humphry Bogart, Gary Cooper, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart... he is not in that league. He lacks their charisma. But McQueen was a star. His acting was limited to certain types of roles but he had the rare star quality.

There is no actor, and I mean NO actor better at playing his chosen persona than Steve McQueen. The master of the tough guy, who could back it up with his own driving and motorcycle riding in Bullitt and The Great Escape.

    • @patrickmorgan4006

Actually, he didn't do all of the driving in either famous scene. He didn't make that motorcycle jump in "The Great Escape" and didn't do all of the driving in the Mustang in the chase scene. Maybe he could have, but he didn't.

Although The Cincinnati Kid is often compared to The Hustler, much as I love Paul Newman's and Jackie Gleason's performances in the latter, I've always found Steve McQueen's and Edward G. Robinson's performances in the former to be much more interesting and complex when they interacted. The two actors thought highly of one another. Edward G. Robinson said of Steve McQueen, "He comes out of the tradition of Gable, Bogie, Cagney, and even me--but he's added his own dimension. He is a stunner..." And Steve McQueen had idolized Robinson while growing up and opted for him to play Lancey Howard when Spencer Tracy insisted on top billing for the same role.
