Wow! This is so awesome, as I too am a huge Shelly Manne fan. Thank you for sharing your great find in such a respectful, demonstrative and entertaining manner. RIP Mrs. "Flip" Manne.
Aww man, what a score! Shelly was so creative. I used to work at GC in Sherman Oaks and they had a big portrait of Shelly at his drums on the stairway up to the drum section of the store. That letter/envelope in your video was addressed to his old Jazz club (Shelly's Manne-Hole, which is now the Velvet Marguerita). My parents used to go there and saw all kinds of Jazz giants. So glad those treasures ended up in your hands.
This is probably one of the coolest videos, drum related or otherwise I’ve seen. So sick to see all of these pieces of history let alone hear them all in one track and see you having fun doing it!
This track has the plastic tubes on it: ruclips.net/video/uKru7ixSlPU/видео.html In fact the whole album, "Mannekind", has a lot of stuff from that box on it. The track "Infinity" was sampled by Dj Premier for the massive 90s hip hop track "Come Clean" by Jeru The Damaja
Ok actually got a kick out of watching you tinker with all this stuff, that microphone sounds absolutely incredible, pristine. what is that? Also the ending was hypnotizing, you are really good at that stuff so do not sell yourself short, sounds like you are a pro at it to me
Jake ... help ! I admit that I'm a 63-year-old newbie and people could say " stop commenting and read more" ... I get it, but I just kind of gave up on learning to play because my Yamaha Sound stage Custom 22" kick drum sounds like I stretched a garbage bag over the hoop...it's dead and muddy to the 10th power. I bought all new matching heads, Evans EC2 360 degree, two-ply, that came with a deadening foam ring. The batter head that was on it was an " EMAD" I believe. The resonant head is original black with no port cut in it. These drums are OLD, so the resonant head is old, the reason I say all this. . . can you tell me at least what setup I should have on my kick drum to get that low thud. I assume you might say that either the EC2 or the older EMAD is fine but I have to change the resonant head ... any information would be so helpful. Also, I read that I should have the proper beater, so could you recommend a beater to get that low end punch? I really like that low end sound, I bought a 14 x 6.5 snare, I have an 18" and 16" floor toms, with 13"and 12" rack toms.
He has a video about kick drum tuning, you might want to start out with that. My personal experience is that it generally starts by making sure that each head is fully in tune with itself so you get a clear pitch out of it. Then you put it into the range you want it in. The reso head usually won't be the same pitch as the batter. I generally tune it higher, but I don't think that's a universal thing. This is mostly going to come from practice and experimentation. You should be able to make most drums sound great as long as the heads and the tuning are good. The beater makes a difference, but I suspect that it's not your problem here, unless you're trying to use something wildly inappropriate like a fluffy jazz beater. That's it's own cool sound, but I don't think it's what you want here. Just mess around and I'm sure you'll find the sound you're looking for.
@@mattheasboelter5217 Thank you for that reply. I must have missed Jake kick drum video because I did search for one. I just read up some more about drum tuning and decided to pick up a Tune Bot device. 58HZ for batter, 87HZ for resonant head for my 22" kick. I bought a Pearl P-930 Denominator kick pedal with a reversible hard/felt head, and of course I have it set to use the felt head. One thing I read last night was to clear my "drum room" of any extra sound deadening article's, so I just spent a few hours today removing all these things from my den, where my drums are, what a difference it made to have nothing in front of the kick drum, it's like the drum can "project" the sound better. I had my drum head and resonant head way too loose, the beater on the kick was too close to the drum, but after adjusting it, it would just loosen again and again, so I upgraded the pedal, and I have to say, I can play faster now, it's a long board.
Those gold things are for making the same sound from the song " Popcorn" ... you GOT to learn how to play " Popcorn" Jake ... ya just GOT to !!! ruclips.net/video/NjxNnqTcHhg/видео.html
What’s your favorite percussion instrument? I love cowbell.
Suspended cymbal for me :D
Temple blocks
My hands :p
More cowbell!
Austrian Didgeridoo ;)
Flock of geese, pod of dolphins, pack of wolves…gang of cowbells. Love it.

To my ears that could definitely be THE triangle

How awesome to see all that cool stuff get a second chance after 40 years of sitting in a warehouse.
Totally!
Hey man! That’s awesome! If you’d make a sample/loop pack with these, I’d instantly buy one like I did with all of your other packs!
Agreed!
My childhood came screaming back with that triangle.
What a kick! I love Shelly. Thanks for sharing, Jake.
These instruments found thier perfect home!
awww shucks!
Fantastic! Thanks for the “tour”
peeping that ludwig bird whistle in drawer 1!!! GREAT OUTRO JAM!!!

Thanks! It was fun to make!
sample PACK. sample PACK. sample PACK. sample PACK.
All those weird instruments were probably on all the Disney and looney tunes. That jam at the end was amazing. Shelly would probably be stoked on it.
❤ awesome find always loved Shelley 👍🙏
So awesome! I swear I recognize those exact bells from an old Christmas song or movie or something lol !
Absolutely incredible! What a find!

Dude you hit the jackpot!
Oh man. That little percussion piece you played at the end reminded me of the music from the Crash Bandicoot games.
Ha! Awesome! Basically did one take of every instrument until there was way too much going on.
That was a great video. It's great to hear some appreciation for Shelly Manne; people don't talk about him a lot. Anyway, thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Yes, he seems to be a bit underrated in the grand scheme of drummers.
Love the channel!
What a treasure!
the hair is looking all pretty like!!!
Nice Vanguard V44S! Ive been eying one for a few years now
Wow. It almost felt like we weren’t allowed to see what was in that box. Amazing!
I felt the same way at first.
I'm grateful that you're the one who got to inherit all of this stuff! Awesome video.
Thanks man!
Great video.
Do a loop bundle with this stuff.
5:15 best part of the whole lot
Fantastic video :-)!!!
This is as close to time travel as a drummer can get ! Awesome drum nerd goodness
Is the song you've made available anywhere? Brilliant!!
so satisfiying

Thanks dude! It’s a Vanguard Audio V44s.
You need to make a video where you use every single instrument in the case all in one video
Haha! I tried but there are sooooooo many. I think I used a healthy portion in the lil ditty at the end.
I think you are a pretty good heir for his instruments. :)
So cool 🔥😎
GOLD
😍
I love this, nostalgia is always good at my age...drummer stuff, yes. The predator call just woke my dog, lol.
Dude! That’s is amazing! Did you buy this case?
ok great video. but thank you for introducing me to shelly manne!
Yes! He’s really amazing both as a jazz player and session drummer/percussionist … played on tons of films and TV shows in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Cowbell jackpot
Way cool. Wuf. 🐻
Hi Jake! I'm writing to you from the Basque Country, about the Kick Out mic, could you tell me which one do you use? The best regards

It’s boring cause you don’t have a sampler.
Great video.
