I have seen Rush like 7 times over their touring history. I saw the Signals Tour and it was amazing- They put on the best show ever, they did Losing It live, it was incredible! As musicians, they were in top form in 83- every song sounded like a cut from the albums. XTC and Beck, also incredible, Thank you for sharing!

@@cozmicpfunk - That's awesome! 😃👍 I'd had only 1 opportunity to see them in concert - and was stupid enough not to take it 🙄 ('Roll The Bones' tour) And in regards to them being in top form, I definitely reckon that Geddy's voice was at its peak on 'Grace Under Pressure' and 'Power Windows' 😊

The violinist who played on Loosing It was Ben Mink, from Toronto Canada, who wrote all the violin parts for this song. They did this live on the R40 tour at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Madison Square Garden, nyc, and,in their hometown of Toronto Canada. This was the only time, since they recorded this song, that they played it live

Hmm, correction. They also played it live during their last show ever, in Los Angeles. Jonathan Dinklage, brother of actor Peter, played the violin. He was magnificent, as were the guys.

You guys would almost certainly love the rest of this Jazz-Fusion album Blow by Blow from Jeff Beck, with Max Middleton on keys (mostly electric piano), Phil Chen on bass, and Richard Bailey on drums. Produced by Sir George Martin. Stevie Wonder makes an uncredited appearance on the song "Thelonius," playing clavinet. But the album is regarded by many as Jeff's best, and his playing, his technique and sounds are in top form throughout the record.

The Beck song shows his brilliance. He was never the fastest or most precise guitar player, but he is easily one of the most expressive guitar players ever. I met Jeff at a convenience store the day after one of his concerts in my home town (ARMS benefit) and he was super nice and down to earth even though my buddy and I were fanboy-ing pretty hard. This is off his best album Blow by Blow (IMO)

GREAT list, guys! 'Losing It' will always be one of my favorite Rush songs ever. I hate to sound like broken record (from previous comments I've made), but you *NEED* to read the lyrics of this one. It's one of Neil's finest moments lyrically, and as artists/musicians, you guys will resonate with this one. It's all about the deep emotions of the aging entertainer (dancer/writer) who can no longer perform the way they could like before due to their older years - it's very sad, but so beautiful at the same time. Canadian multi-instrumentalist Ben Mink played the violin on this. And fun fact: on the last tour, they finally played this song live (which they may have NEVER done), and they used world-renown violinist Jonathan Dinklage, brother of Game of Throne's, PETER DINKLAGE.

This is one of XTC's more poppy songs- definitely happier than the ones in my marathon!! They can be quite varied in their style, as in some others I love from Oranges and Lemons like "Miniature Sun" and "Chalkhills and Children."

I remember buying his album 'Blow by blow' when it first came out (Yes I am that old!) and I would listen to this on my headphones and just get lost. How awesome it is to think he with Page and Clapton all came out of the Yardbirds in the mid to late 60's (and yes I was around for that also). So off the Signals album the first lyrics are about a ballerina and then about a writer-in this case: Ernest Hemingway and at the time Neil reflected that this applies to anyone with gifts of dance, voice, writing, sports that there is a finite time of being at your peak and slowly over time: Losing It…the gift that made you a living perhaps famous celebrity known to be best at something. Neil himself acknowledged that it was coming to an end for him-retirement. Aches pains etc ultimately cancer but also knowing the years of stamina particularly from Fly by Night to Power Windows was ebbing away. The wonderful Mr. Ben Mink on Electric Violin 🎻

Nick & Lex, that was a great marathon. Love Rush & Losing It has always been one of my favorite hidden gems they have & had never played it live until their last tour which was the only tour Rush did not bring to Pittsburgh. I seen them every time they came to Pittsburgh, like 25 times & they didn't come here for the last. I was so bummed, I kept thinking they was going to add on shows because they never missed the burgh before. Pittsburgh was also their first show in the states with Neil Peart. Opening up for Uriah Heep & Manfred Mann was the middle act & I was there.
Between the Wheels is an awesome song from Grace Under Pressure which I think is an under appreciated album by Rush. Grace Under Pressure is a fantastic album. I think their last great great album until Clockwork Angels their last album. And please do the Garden from Clockwork Angels, such a great song. One of my favorites by them ever.
The XTC was cool, I don't really know much about them.
Jeff Beck Cause We've Ended As Lovers has always been one of my favorites from Jeff Beck. Got to see him a few times & he would do that note for note. Always had great musicians playing with him to, through our his career.

My favourite tracks from Grace Under Pressure are 'The Body Electric' and 'Kid Gloves'. XTC are a band I lost touch with after their quite punky/new wave debut which had the excellent 'Statue of Liberty' on it. But I've heard this track before somewhere and it was great to hear it again. Jeff Beck is simply sublime. I imagine being in a smoky pub or bar watching him play when I hear this tune. This was great, I only knew the 4th song. I must say I LOVE the second Rush piece. Now I'm a "prog head" (if I can steal Nick's phrase!) and I love odd time signatures and lots of changes. For me I had a VERY hard time following the beat of the first track through much of it. I thought it was great, but for me it's rare when that happens. I'm very excited to give it another listen as it's intriguing to me that I wasn't able to "get it" on the first listen. The XTC song was so much fun, and Jeff Beck, well... What can I say. But at their last show in Los Angeles, which I was fortunate to see, the guest violinist was Jonathan Dinklage, brother of Peter the actor. Jonathan was wonderful, as were the guys, of course.

Jeff Beck dedicated the song to Roy Buchanan, who used a lot of volume knob swells. The song was written by Stevie Wonder, who also had an uncredited appearance playing clavinet on the album. Another connection with Wonder was that when Beck was contributing a solo to Wonder's "Talking Book" album, he arrived early to the studio and started playing a beat on the drum set. Wonder came in, and said keep playing, and wrote his big hit "Superstitious" around that drum part.

I feel Grace under pressure is a bit underrated album. Between the Wheels (love Alex's solo) and Body Electric are probably my favorite songs on it. Distant Early Warning and Red Sector A are both solid as well. Losing it is also my fav off of Signals, with New World Man and Subdivisions close behind.

Hi again, nothing to add about Rush, as you do need to know the lyrics, before you realise how emotional it was, [ 😥 ] XTC you need to see them on a video to get the kind of band they are...."Senses Working Overtime" is a good one. As tracks go, my favourite is "Towers of London" which I do play on repeat on their Greatest Hits album....and they have a lot of hits ! Jeff Beck ? Still cannot get over it he is gone. Still hurts....Love the track played, and you seriously need to see that also on video, with Tai "Live at Ronnie Scotts" .... You mentioned the movie "Leon" at the end ... Omg I love Jean Reno movies !!! ... You need to see "22 Bullits" where he is attacked by a gang and shot 22 times ... but survives to take revenge on each gang member. [ I watched it in French with subtitles ] but my favourite [ & Jaw dropping movie ] is called " The Big Blue" and you need the extended Directors Cut version....It begins with children ... deep sea diving, and the lad who plays a young Reno is the spitting image of him as a kid. Then it gets to Reno as a man and the competition of deep sea diving to incredible depths without breathing....His competition is so incredible he cannot be human ... is he ? A must see movie. Don't expect fast action or car chases. This is an extraordinary movie with stunning underwater scenes....Watching at a swimming pool ...sitting on the bottom of the pools deep end ... [ hold your breath, Lol ] is just one of many amazing scenes. I even bought the movie soundtrack. Listen to the main theme start and you will know why. I cannot recommend this movie enough. @@franckthibault2521 Hi I love French movies and don't mind subtitles. Hollywood is too predictable. Fun but Foreign movies have a tougher edge. 22 Bullets os indeed also called "L'Immortal" very violent like "Leon" Another of Jean Reno is " Wasabi" and it's an action thriller with a difference. It's hysterical !!! Literally cried laughing and the action is brilliant ! ... "The Big Blue" is quite simply a wonderful movie. I have watched so many times over the decades. Watch a u.t trailer and it's enough to hook you in.... Wasabi & The Big Blue are both in English. Great movies and I could name plenty more. Checkout Director Leos Carax with actor Denis Levant.

I have so many movies to suggest to you from France or Quebec…. But my favorite “Foreign” movie is the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy. They did the 1st one in Hollywood, but the Originals are better: they are Swedish.

So this is a great mix of music. XTC and Jeff, what can you say, this is classic XTC and Jeff Beck making their statement, and becoming some of their well known tracks . . .
But I have to GUSH for 2 of my all time fave tracks. One being a gut-wrenching deep cut, and another single release, but an angry powerful statement from RUSH.
1st, that is "Ben Mink" on Electric Violin, a good friend of Rush, from the awesome Canadian Progressive Rock band *FM.* The way Alex does that set-up, when you think he's about to Solo, Ben emulates the guitar sound, and then just starts WAILING into _his_ own solo on Violin. At times it brings me to tears! This track has always been a fates warning of sorts, a cautionary tale I didn't want to happen. But at 59, I'm looking back and my life today and wondering why it hasn't gone anywhere. You think-on all the complacency, the bad decisions and where its taken you. You hope they are learning experiences but then you look at the road you traveled, and it didn't take you where you could shine. For me its a song of regret and the closing verse . . .
"Some are born to move the world -
    To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we’d like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you - the blind who once could see -
    The bell tolls for thee…"
. . . This became my dreaded reality for the past few years. But it will probably end-up in a book on my life (and stories of what NOT to do), and I still cling to hope that my Art and designs will end-up in a big film, or some crazy project with my art/music friends for all to see and live the dream (or some "music" related career).
"Signals" was my 1st Rush Tour as well. I had been into them since "Moving Pictures" just months before Signals debuted and their 2nd live album "Exit... Stage Left". And then I went backwards into their catalogue (and finally discovered "Hemispheres"!). I had seen every tour after, but missed "Counterparts" (one of my fave albums) and "Clockwork Angels" tours sadly, but got to see "R40", but . . .
After the band asking its fans what songs they would like to see Rush perform (of tracks they never did, and rare ones), "Losing It" was my #1 track I wanted to see. Unfortunately, I went to the 2nd to last show, Irvine Meadows in Irvine Calif., not the last at the LA Forum . . . which was the only venue they would perform _Losing It_ other than NYC and Toronto shows (Ben played at Toronto, but guest "Jonathan Dinklage" did the rest of the tour). Broke my heart, but it was a great show that I was able to see with my "Uptown Girl", my Brother and a close Friend :).
    - For the 2nd listen Nick & Lex, do breakout the Lyrics (you can find all their lyrics on the Rush official site), and NEVER waste a moment in your life, be bold and live your dreams!
It also was part of an old playlist based on "Time", that I have to re-do, with a few Kansas, Fates Warning and King Crimson tracks, they were MUSTS among over 300 songs to make the whole concept work.
"Between the Wheels" is the closer for Grace Under Pressure. It's as intense and brutally powerful as "Afterimage" (inspired by a loss of a friend), but it could reflect the very times we are living _today._ Their playing (especially Neil and Alex) is ferocious! Alex's guitar tone is like "The Edge" of U2 and "Paul Reynolds" of Flock of Seagulls, turned up to 15! Heavily ladened with Chorus and Alex's overdrive tone . . . It rips through the song, angry, hostile and befitting the lyrics. You can imagine Neil's Kit shaking from the power of each hit of the drums (like in the official video for Afterimage) and smashing those crash cymbals! And Geddy's keyboard "Alarm" (edit: Lexi got it! "Siren") riffs and pounded notes giving the track urgency and _danger_ throughout (and his vocals, you can feel the anger). And Alex making his "Sportscaster" (his gorgeous Candy Red "Hentor" Strat with the chrome pick guard) scream in anger, frustration, and those whammy bar bends and tremolo making its angry statement! I can't help but make that "Stank Face" and play air-guitar to it. Its _one of_ Alex's most emotional tracks (listen to how many "parts" Alex is handling on the 1st chorus, taking-on the rhythm, the lead and the "fills" - Tremendous!).
All playing to the words (2nd chorus) . . .
    "Wheels can take you around
    Wheels can cut you down
We can go from boom to bust
From dreams to a bowl of dust
We can fall from rockets’ red glare
Down to “Brother can you spare -”
Another war - another waste land -
    And another lost generation…"
The Grace Under Pressure Tour was very special, would be my 2nd time seeing them (again at Irvine Meadows), and I had guessed that Neil would do his "solo" within or after the track "Red Lenses" as the tribal beat of it made it _perfect_ for him to jump right into whatever new solo he conjured-up for the tour . . . and HE DID IT! :D
    - This will be another to listen to over and over when you are just focused on the music, then the lyrical content, and how it all comes together to tell the whole story, much like _Losing It,_ how the music perfectly matches the story, and those who couldn't live those dreams, or once had the talents, but age and decay had led to the end.
This is what I love about Rush (and Kansas); words that resonate with everyday people, our goals, aspirations, flights of fantasy, topical subjects and the world around us. That's why I always say that the lyrics in both bands usually get quoted on any given subject by me and my close friends.
I REALLY miss these guys, and "Pratt" (and Robby Steinhardt of Kansas), we will NEVER see/hear the like again.
    - Thank you soo much Nick & Lexi! And to Will I Am for the excellent selections!
. . . and glad Marley came in at the right moment 😊

Losing it is a very sad song for rush fans these days. It’s about elite artists, dancers etc. realizing their skills are fading and they aren’t at their peak anymore. Ben Mink did the violin on Signals and on some of the last concert tour when they played it live. The other dates were covered by a violinist who had been part of the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble. The Triumvirate went out on top which is how I’m sure they’d want to be remembered. But how did Neil have the presence of mind and empathy to write something so prescient in his 20s? How many aging performers had he met by then?
