I and we have no easy fix for that, but best recommendation that I can think of is if you have a local luggage retailer or locksmith that could have a look and try to help. For most locks, there is a "play" and connection between the release button, and the set button. It sounds like could be a jam internally between these two, but difficult to say without actually seeing and feeling the lock.
