Erdmännchen sind extreme Gruppentiere. Obwohl sie Raubtiere sind, haben sie aufgrund ihrer geringen Größe viele Feinde. Eine Schutzmaßnahme vor unangenehmen Überraschungen ist der sogenannte Wächter. Das ist ein Erdmännchen, das - meist auf den Hinterbeinen stehend - nach potentiellen Fressfeinden Ausschau hält und gegebenenfalls akustisch die Gruppe warnt. Die übrigen Gruppenmitglieder sind so entlastet. Die Position des Wächters wechselt im Laufe des Tages mehrfach.
