The Office wouldn't work now for one big, simple reason: companies like Dunder Mifflin literally don't exist anymore. The original series addressed that to some degree in the later seasons by realizing that B2B regional paper sales was a rapidly dying business model in 2009. In 2023, we're facing a world where Dunder Mifflin's biggest disrupters, Office Depot and Staples, are THEMSELVES struggling to stay afloat. It just doesn't make sense for Dunder Mifflin to exist.
While companies _very_ like Dunder Mifflin don't exist/struggle now, there are still thousands of offices just like the one in the show. It would still work as the setting for a barely related reboot like Captain Midnight is talking about.
@@noahblack914Yeah I can personally attest to this. The key will be making it no longer a company that's a supplier, but instead have the company be a service or consulting. I work at a company that's about 20 ish people and we are low voltage electrical engineering consultants. It's as boring as it sounds, but the amount of wasted time through beurocracy (meetings, cross time zone communication, etc) would make the perfect excuse for why the characters can get up to hijinks.

I think you're putting too much thought into it. I wholeheartedly think if Dunder Mifflin actually is the focal company of the show, there will be some exposition dump about how Dunder Mifflins printer connections transitioned into a high tech hardware company for 3d printers or something and it'll be played off as a joke.
The reboot wouldn’t work now because everything is woke. Meaning, it wouldn’t be funny.

It seems like everything is a reboot or sequel these days. How many independent live-action Spiderman series have we had in the 21st century? 4?
If we get really lucky there'll be another strike soon, maybe not the same group involved but hopefully Hollyweird will get shutdown again.
The writers and actors aren't driving the dreaded reboots. The strike is not relevant to your concerns. Producers and network executives love to minimize risk by producing proven "winners." Familiar movies and shows from which they squeeze every last dollar out of Charlie's Angel's, Twilight Zone, Full House, etc.
If you wanted the strike to continue (however tongue-in-cheek you imagine your comment) you're way off the mark for the culprits of rebooting. I doubt that you felt that the strikers should've demanded an end to reboots.

The smartest way to go about this would be with a completely new cast and new office space right? Essentially make this next series where the film crew went after they were done at dunder Mifflin. Getaway do a shared universe where each different interpretation of the office is all being filmed by the same crew as they complete different documentaries

Considering that the US Office is already both a copy of the UK Office and exists in the same universe due to a crossover with David Brent, why can't there be yet another Office in a different part of the country? There doesn't even need to be a reboot. For the record, i'm utterly bored with the concept, but I'm not bothered by the idea either.

There's actually an Indian version, but obviously not in English. and I don't know if any good, considering nobody talks about it.
The problem I see with all of these nostalgic reboots, is that we as fans do not want to invest the time in watching them when the current climate for television is to cancel shows when ratings or numbers are not immediately high.
Back in the 90s and early 2000s tv shows were given time to settle, and most were not cancelled immediately because word of mouth was important to get viewers to become invested.
Series like 3rd Rock From The Sun would have never survived today because the viewership when first launched was not super high. I can say I was a fan of the iCarly reboot but I never got super invested because I always had a feeling it would get cancelled prematurely, and the worst part is that since networks keep cancelling shows when they have cliffhanger endings; audiences are becoming distrustful of new releases and would just prefer to continue watching classic series that had complete endings.
Another problem with these Nostalgic reboots is people don’t realize they’ll never get that same experience they got from the orginal, no matter what they do. The cast grew up, people look different, Their character arcs are complete, there’s just nothing really left to tell in the story.
I remember Steve Carrell answer to a reboot years back was “The fans think they want us to come back but they don’t REALLY want us to come back, the time was specific and it was basically lightning in a bottle. The fans want that show exactly how it was to come back and there’s no way that would ever happen.”
@@sideeyed7682 that is why it sucks that Icarly specifically got canceled because the cast and crew cared about what they were doing and had at least one story left to tell, something that we've quietly wondered about since the original show. Carly's mom and what's worse is the studio gaslighting fans trying to act like they didn't absolutely screw them over.
Even then, good ratings don't immediately save you.
Bojack Horseman, by its 5th season, had become one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows of all time. The only reason it got a season 6 is because the creators and actors begged Netflix for one season to wrap up the story.

One of, if not the most acclaimed animated TV show of all time ended up getting cancelled for pretty much no reason that I can find.
Other shows, it's a complete dice roll if they go anywhere.
The Simpsons is on its 1000th season.
Star Trek TNG is a great example of this, the first two season were rough, awful even, it didn't hit it's stride till about midway though the 3rd season, and then seasons 4-7 are some of the best television ever made. That show never would have made it past the 2nd season in todays climate.
Just make it a true sequel. The station hasn't had a hit since the first documentary so they find a new office, somewhere, and attempt to catch lightening twice. It can be played tongue and cheek since that's what NBC is doing with Peacock and this reboot. Let Daniels take it from there.
Yeah right?? And to appease all the hardcore fans, just throw in dumb Easter eggs - a grocery bag that says Shrute Farms, a news article about the Scranton Strangler being released from prison, Robert California is now the head of like a rocket company. Etc

That’s not the flimsiest idea for a reboot I’ve ever heard. Many sequels to documentaries exist in real life. Even Michael “I’ll fight the power after my third crunchwrap” Moore made a follow-up to *Roger & Me* called *Pets or Meat.*
Rebooted shows always seem to forget why they ended in the first place.
They also tend to forget what made the original so beloved in the first place as well and do the complete opposite of everything people actually liked about it.
There’s also the case of The Office being one of the last TV shows to treat work as a collective “friends we meet along the way” experience. Nowadays most shows fall along Severance’s line of “how the workplace exploits capitalism for everyone’s misery but shareholders” vibes. At least by current generational critiques.

I have worked in offices in the last 10 years. It is a fucking cold and sterile environment. Most of the people you work with, you would never take them out for beer and wings on their birthday much less attend their wedding.
There is no camaraderie . That shit is a fantasy as people are now more expendable then ever. You never know how long people will last. Why would you make friends with people you don’t expect to see next year?
And if you have WFH, or hybrid, you barely even interact with them aside from hearing their voice in a zoom call.
Also, identity politics and political wokeness has ruined relationships, so much so, that instead making friends and opening up to people, we feel like shutting ourselves from the world and keeping our real thoughts to ourselves lest we make enemies who try to cancel us.

True, but that's just the Michael Schur style. Parks and Recreation made government systems inviting, Brooklyn 99 has been called copaganda and The Good Place caused hell to look pretty. This friendly nature is idealistic but the foundation that makes his shows hit. So if he was brought back on board I'd encourage it- it wouldn't be a Michael Schur show without that

You know what show I wanna see? A new sci-fi series set in the Firefly universe, but *not* a remake.
A TNG to Firefly's TOS. Make it follow a space cruiseliner instead of a freighter. Have Mal or Jayne be a side character and fufill the Book role. Gimme something like that!
Or something similar with Babylon 5, another show they're trying to remake and really, *really* shouldn't be... Sure Crusade was dismal, but I still think a good Babylon 5 series is doable.

Everything is nostalgia. Star Wars was nostalgia for the old pulp adventures. The difference is that Star Wars did something new with the source material, using the nostalgia in a way that appealed to new audiences. Hell even the Bible has a quote "Nothing new under the sun."

But you are right. Our culture is not capable of producing anything new that is of value, so it's simply digging through and wallowing in what it has already made. Cultural/social stagnation. History has some interesting things to teach us about what comes next.

The only reboot that has worked was Cobra Kai and that is only because there was huge potential for character development that hadn’t yet been established and because the writers had the good sense to create a bridge for the old movie characters to new characters that we care about.

Yeah, not the best analogy bud. In other parts of the world (everywhere but the US, and prob UK), it’s customary to use a spoon when eating spaghetti. I’ve tried it and it’s really useful. It’s like a little handheld dish used to control the noodles as you spin your fork around. Keeps sauce from flying everywhere and maintains a nice, tight swirl of noodle.

When auditions were happening Krasinski himself had told Greg Daniels (unknowingly) that he was worried about the American version because to him, the British version was too good and might be ruined.
The Office itself is already a reboot and nearly failed in its first season, we *really* shouldn’t get carried away.
The Jim/Pam love story is what drove the office for 6 seasons. The 7th season was coasting off of that. 8 and 9 were zombie seasons which, while they had some good comedy, lacked an overall drive pushing it forward.

Even there, there was such a good cast and set of characters, they were able to keep it going after him.
More and more its like the entertainment industry has forgotten that new ideas exist.
I don't know if it's still planned or not, but I'm somewhat interested in the Australian version that's coming to Prime Video, because it feels like a good way to continue the story without relying on the fondness for the US show, like how the US show didn't rely on the fondness for the UK show.
My gut tells me that the bulk of the storyline will be the boss trying to find the perfect man and a bunch of COVID jokes but I'm definitely going to give it an open minded try.
I am not even joking but the only revival or reboot I have actually liked is Icarly and that was just canceled abruptly a few days ago completely ignoring the cliffhanger of her Mom. What is most frustrating about this specific cancellation is that the cast and crew were not expecting it and had very obviously planned to explore Carly’s mother as a fourth season storyline. Icarly was just nostalgic enough without feeling like the ‘adult’ aspect was unnatural or forced.
It just goes to show that no matter how popular or successful studios will never keep these things longer than three years.
I do not see Fraiser or the office working at all, and I'm not going to let myself get reinvested just to hear that they are also canceled in three years.
As a huge fan of the original show, i absolutely love the iCarly revival, it's a shame that they cancelled the show abruptly with a cliffhanger. That show is an example how to done a revival of a kids show in the right way for the older audiences who grew up watching the original, something that the Lizze McGuire revival should've take notes
@@15Candles I know I love that it was different from the original but still respected it. I'm hoping that even if it takes a few years there is a wrap-up movie or special, it seriously feels like the studio is taking the phrase “leave them wanting more” very literally.
I only watched a couple of episodes of the Revival. As a fan of the OG, I could not keep watching the new stuff. Should I stick it out?
@@FenixReZ if what you loved about the original was the random = funny sketches then the revival probably isn't for you, but if you liked the characters and the situations that they got themselves into then it's definitely worth watching.
@@joshz2491 I would say the sketches put the characters in very interesting situations which brought out traits and reasons to why I like them so much. I haven’t watched the revival in awhile but the first few episodes didn’t feel the same to me in terms of writing and payoff
It also doesn't help that the concept of office culture nowadays could probably be stretched thin. I could be wrong but I think in terms of comedic potential, I can picture two seasons at the MOST for a show like this.
But yeah, this will either be decent or crash and burn. This will either age like wine or milk.
I would fucking love it if it starts as a cohesive office, then it just follows those employees as they hit redundancies, buyouts and divisions, working from home, getting bought again and more firings, over and over until almost no one is working together anymore.
The one character they could bring back and be really funny is Creed. Imagine if he just around and up to his old tricks again without addressing what happened to him between the office and the new one until like maybe the end when he gets arrested again. He could also bring up some of the crazy things that used to go on at his old job while getting names and details wrong as usual. Which would make the references more funny instead “DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN THIS HAPPENED IN THAT SHOW YOU LIKE?”

if they do bring back the original cast I hope they have a "where are they now" type mini-series. The characters all went their own way at the end of the series so I feel like it's the only format that could work. If they do reboot/remake the series it probably won't last more than a few seasons.
I haven't seen "The Office," but I gotta say, your thoughts on a potential reboot echo a lot of my thoughts on the upcoming "Fraiser" revival. I'm cautiously optimistic, but the more pragmatic side of me says there's no way it'll capture the zeitgeist like the original did if only because "Fraiser" was already an unlikely success, and it's hard to make lightning strike twice (or three times if you wanna count "Cheers," too).
Also, the TV landscape has changed so much in the past two decades. Even if it turns out to be hilarious, it's hard for me to be hopeful that it'll run for more than two seasons unless it's a smash hit for Paramount+ right out of the gate. I am thankful they're surrounding Kelsey Grammer with an entirely new main cast, though. No one seems to be saying it, but I feel doing that was a boon to the OG show from the beginning, and probably the smartest move the reboot is making right now.

Star Trek TNG did have Diana Muldar, who played two different characters in TOS, come in for season 2 as Pulaski. But I’d argue that neither of her characters were important or beloved enough for that to be nostalgia bait, she was likely hired because she just had experience already
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I would love a show EXCLUSIVELY about Creed and his backstory. That would just be awesome.

Nah. What made him so funny and interesting is that we knew next to nothing about him, so each reveal about his character always came as a WTF??? surprise. His whole character is this guy no one quite knows or understands.
Everybody knows that spin-offs are an infinitely cooler idea than reboots or revivals.
Speaking of the Christmas special, I finally found it in a second-hand store in the other end of my home country on my Summer holiday this year. I'll never forgive the people behind it for not just tacking it onto the Series 2 DVD, leading me on a 3 year hunt for the third DVD. Especially since it's the original Office's actual show finale, unlike every other show's Christmas special.

If they are going to reboot it, they should do it with Bob Odenkirk's character that is basically Michael Scott in those 2 season 9 episodes. I think that character could work. Also, get Michael Weston to be a part of the cast. He was in those episodes and he was also Private Dancer on SCRUBS.
It's hard to imagine The Office coming back with the same (or most) of the case, but it seems harder to imagine a new cast. I think it's possible with good writers - whichever option they choose - because the comedy of The Office was built around the perspective of awkward office interactions. That hasn't gone anywhere, so if they can write unique situations in it and build new character interactions, they'll have something people are willing to watch.

i genuinely think it can work very well as long as they focus on the mockumentary format - talking heads are good and i think audiences miss them! look how well received abbot elementary is! all new characters but we are aware there is a camera crew - maybe a new city and state? there’s some real opportunity here and i’m choosing to stay optimistic until i’m convinced otherwise
I agree with all of this, except S.4 & 5 of Arrested Development. After rewatching it years after it coming out, I LOVED IT! They can’t compare to 1, 2, and 3, but not because they are bad or lower quality at all, but just because it is different. I know it’s an unpopular opinion though.
Your point with TNG is right on the money. The same happened with the first season of the "Justice League" cartoon. VERY few cameos from characters who had previously appeared in other DCAU shows, save for The Joker and Lex Luthor being big ones. It didn't lean on older continuity until it had established itself as its own thing firmly, then season 2 brought it some other favorite characters from Batman TAS and Superman TAS. This Office reboot should do the same, totally agree.

JL before JLU (Twilight/Starcrossed are the exceptions) is in incredibly fucking dull to me and really diminishes most of the characters by, natch, making it mostly the Batman and friends show. Which is why both Twilight and Starcrossed stand out by NOT being Batman and his hangers on, but showcasing these characters in their glory.
I get rebooting a show after 30 or so years but it has only been like 10 years...
This is going to be an uphill battle because there’s already a comedy in a current office setting, Mythic Quest
With the Frasier revival, I was so disappointed that none of the original cast (other than Kelsey Grammer) were going to be in the show. I wanted to see what Niles and Daphne were doing, was Roz living a happy life with her daughter Alice? I think the story is just focussing of Frasier and his son Freddy in Boston when I would have preferred it to still be set in Seattle.
Maybe they are saving it for later if the show has legs.

I'm not saying it would or wouldn't be a good idea to reboot the show but I love how adamant everyone is that a reboot would be awful despite the show itself already being a reboot of the UK version, like imagine if they hadn't made that because people were whining at just the idea of a reboot of the original version, we wouldn't have this show to not want to be rebooted in the first place.
Like he said in the video the original office was only one season. The reboot is off of 200 episodes. Even with the new dynamic of office work nowadays I don't think it will last more than 4 seasons.
@@bigrod1674 Yes I understand that, but what I'm saying is that when this version was originally pitched if everyone that liked the original had said "you shouldn't do a reboot because it's already been done and blahblahblah" then we wouldn't have got the show we did. Like I said, I'm not saying it should or shouldn't get a reboot, I don't massively care either way, like to me personally if they did reboot it and it was terrible it doesn't ruin the "original" reboot for me, I just wouldn't watch it.

I’ve said for a while, the only way I I’d wanna see a office “reboot” is if you take the Young Sheldon route and make a tv show about Michael Scott as a kid. You could even get Steve Carell to narrate it.

Pretty much the same thing happened with Red Dwarf and The IT Crowd. Neither made it past the atrocious pilot.
I don't even get why it has to be a reboot, (I mean I get it, they gotta get those nostalgia money) hut it could easily be another Office with a whole new set of characters.
I’m content with them leaving The Office alone. In fact, it’d seem a little redundant now given that there’s Abbott Elementary, which I’m hoping will continue.
The premise for a workplace comedy with an all-new cast could work; like Brooklyn 99 and Super Store. But post-pandemic there are no "small offices". It's either a huge company or a home office. For example, a show about a RUclips channel and their daily lives.
What would have been great was a one time Zoom meeting “episode” of The Office during the pandemic. But that’s literally it.

So if it would be placed on a streaming service, they’d probably try to serialize it more than it was (if it wasn’t like that already).

They are making an Australian version, i saw them filming in wentworth point(a suburb in Sydney), im not holding out much hope in it being good, but ill probably watch it.
They should do a spin off following Creed through his prison sentence they could do it in documentary style just set in a prison

The single reason why this won't work is because of the social/political climate of today. It's that simple. Steve Carrel himself has even said this.
People get offended by comedy they don't like, and call for comedians to be cancelled because they think they're entitled to never be challenged or offended.
Plenty of characters in The Office have offensive moments, particularly Michael. And even though he's portrayed as extremely ignorant, there's just no way any kind of decent, nuanced comedy gets greenlit with the extremely sanitized entertainment industry we're in now.
Eh. Plenty to be offended by if you care to be offended by it. I don't see why decent, nuanced comedy couldn't exist now. Especially created by big corporations. Individuals can get cancelled. Corps survive by being legion. There's no risk to them... unless the IRS gets involved, but that's a different story.
@@endlessforestmedia While I don't necessarily like the Big Bang, I do appreciate that they went "okay if one of these three actors leaves, the show's over." And then when the actor playing Sheldon wanted to leave, they ended it. Really shows how much they understood their own show and why people liked it.
I was looking for someone commenting this, you just wouldn't get away with some of the humour from The Office. The audience isn't trusted to know what's wrong and what's right anymore.

An Office reboot in 2023 would have micheal get canceled and make Kelly the manager, Pam the assistant to the manager and Jim the secretary and everyone would wonder why it wasn’t funny lol
If they reboot I hope it's a new office where only Creed is there hiding out under a new identity, and the first episode introduces a manager who has to fire someone and calls the oldest staff member, Creed in for him to be up to his old ways and conniving his way off the chopping block as always

The Office reboot is probably the Mindy Kailing's character taking over the parent company of Dunder Mifflin and banning paper because is bad for climate change, also Jim can't prank Dwight, because Dwight is trans now, and it makes her feel unsafe, and maybe two or three race swaps on random characters.

Batman and James Bond are designed for new ideas and "reboots". Bad examples. Why don't we look at other properties that have gotten reboots. Willow? Garbage. Haunted Mansion? Garbage. Aladdin? Garbage. Actually any live action remake from Disney. Mulan, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Dumbo. All garbage. Stop making rehashes, remakes and reboots, and make something original for a change.
I think a big difference is that those franchises aren’t comedies. It’s very hard to update an older concept with a modern/different sense of humour. A lot of people here in the UK prefer our version because the US Office is just so tonally different, and I think a modern reboot would have a similar difference in the comedy. It’s tough, I’d hope it goes well if it does end up happening, but I’m not holding my breath

I love Greg Daniels, but I can't see how a rebooted Office, or King of the Hill, can possibly recapture what made them special in the first place. I'd rather see them try to get the Schrute's Farm spinoff or Monsignor Martinez spinoff off the ground again, at least those could bring something new to the table.
The only way I’d really love to see the original cast come back is maybe for a reunion special where the documentary crew comes back for a “where are they now” type thing.
That was the finale in a way. Just not that far out in the future.

My idea was to have a show called the warehouse. Times are tough at Dunder Mifflin, so the office staff are hard at work trying to keep or get new clients. The warehouse staff meanwhile has lots of down time for them to goof off. A total switch from before, and we would get occasional appearances from Dwight Angela and Erin. I think it could work with the right writing staff. What do you think?
Might be fun for a reunion season. One season of specials with the same characters. Intentionally over the top where are they now style 10 years later documentary follow up. Jim is running a successful mega Company like a Twitter, giant breakfast cereal bar in the break room and bean bags. But several seasons with new faces will just feel stale and hollow.
I'm not worried because it will get one season and disappear forever.

I think you could get away with a reunion. A special episode with love and care but not even a full season would do well.

I’ve been saying for a while now the only way an office reboot would work would be for it to be a ONE TIME movie OR a mock true crime docuseries on creeds crimes. Maybe a camera man saved a lot of evidence of Creeds crimes but wasn’t allowed to add the footage becuase it didn’t fit the vision or whatever, but now that the NDA is up, he can make it a whole series of it’s own? I just think that’s a different enough concept grounded in the character with the most unanswered questions, it could work!!
Michael doesn't speak in the finale very much as by Acting Union rules, he has to have very limited dialogue in order to not be listed in the cast. He didn't speak much so it could be a surprise at the end.
Reboot wouldnt make sense, but i could envision a similar show that deals with people working in typical corporate jobs. Especially a show revolving around project work would have material for ages
But you must understand, the heavily restricted social media managers of the future will need Office reaction gifs to sell their products

If it's more of a spiritual successor similar to Parks & Rec I'm okay with it
it would be cool if they changed the premise away from the "office" setting and into a more blue-collar role, like a team of maintenance men at a large factory or a plumbing company that traveled to do residential/commercial work. There arent a lot of people who get to see how these workers interact and it would be cool to have it recognized
I thought the last episode of THE OFFICE was going to be a clip show and that after all of those years filming the documentary they only had about 20 minutes of usable footage.
They could do the route where its a completely new cast except from maybe a few set at Dunder Miflin
I will say this.. it might finally influence me to go back and rewatch the office in its entirety again. I haven’t done that since it was newly released.
Well maybe as a new serie..., with no cameos, no references maybe a wink wink here and there, like a froggy 101 sticker or a Saber Printer.
But we are in the era of the nostalgic reboots so they can have an "opportunity" to catch an existing audience. So this can go wrong.

It's a very different genre and therefore less applicable but it's still interesting to me how many don'ts in this video are present in the new Fionna and Cake series but none of it (imo) falls flat the way many of the mentioned examples have. I'm guessing a big reason for this difference lies in the way Adventure Time presents its "universe": aspects of its lore are deliberately left rather vague to spark intrigue, one answer raises ten new questions, and this gives the writers a myriad of starting blocks to expand new stories off.
I'm doubtful Peacock will still exist by the time they are ready to bring The Office back 😆

@@Lily-rz8mg The movies are as definitive as we’re ever gonna get to those stories on the big screen, as there are only extremely loyal to the park with like nothing left out, the stuff they added on Feels very natural like it could’ve happened in the book and actually extends the book opposed to other book adaptations which leave things out, this adds things on :-) they should’ve just continued it, if only Iger Didn’t hate and just neglect Narnia. And either way, I personally find Barbie is overdone, not to mention that Greta is also running the live action Snow White……
They already stretched it too thin with 9 seasons as it is. What else could they possibly do with this premise, beyond one or two obligatory "work from home amiright millennials?" gags. The show wasnt even good post-S3 in the original run.

your idea for the reboot made me really hopeful that they'll do it that way. For some reason almost everyone that was on the office seems to be totally cashing in on the nostalgia for the old show, so I doubt they will, but it would be awesome to see a take on offices today. A lot has changed since the show was on.
It’s funny you mentioned Star Trek. Strange New Worlds season one was a breath of fresh air in the nostalgia mines of the current era of Trek. Season two was full of good episodes, but they’ve begun to lean heavily on TOS characters making appearances. As well-done as, say, Montgomery Scott’s introduction is, I do get kinda tired of Lieutenant James T. Kirk showing up every other episode
