It's actually nice to hear them discuss how they work and what their opinions are on different matters regarding the law. They don't seem that distant and strict like living in another world.
I really hope that there will be more of such type of interviews and documentaries regarding the Supreme Court.

"pusillanimous" - showing a lack of courage or determination; timid.

In Britain there is no justice unless you can afford it.

It appears that way to me: if wealthy you can buy best legal advice & help. But anyway: NO judicial system can be truly impartial: they must all choose who to provide the most protections to - and it has always/here (?) been the case that the wealthy and powerful (who need legal help and advice least - except to try to hold onto what they have already?) have enjoyed superior protections, can that ever change and if so how?

Correct. You also have the power to 'test' the law and see whether it goes in your favour in the courts. If you're relying on legal aid, they decide whether its worth paying for.

Then you take it to the European courts.

They traditionally have not been equal because women choose to leave because they are not as obsessed with their career identities as men are and realize there is more to life than the miseries of the law.

The lack of female progression might be because women leave the bar and have children. Why should you be seen as just as competent or experienced if you have 2-5 years less experience than your competitors?

    • @RB-747
      @RB-747 Год назад +1

Except if you are 2-5 years older than your 'competitors' that obviously would balance out wouldn't it? The issue is the bar is institutionally sexist in it makes it much more difficult to return at all. Most female barristers cannot actually take their maternity leave, and don't, which is part of why so many leave the profession ultimately

It's impressive how none of the judges are even slightly concerned about the lack of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds on their bench. The justice system reeks of institutional racism.

Oh, shut up. They are selected by a panel, if they haven't selected an Asian or a black person now, that doesn't mean that it will never happen

    • @rich9012

It really isn't surprising, nor should it be. The job requires strict application to the letter of the law in past precedent, as well as balancing principles and conventions of law which protect fundamental rights under both transnational law and common law; such derivations of a justice's role can be found in any one expert person regardless of their identification. The prejudice that you seek to tackle would be better aimed towards unrepresentative juries, who decide evidence on superfluous rhetoric.

look at the age of them, so essentially it is one generation, at that time there was pretty much no ethnic minorities

When you look at the qualifications to become a Supreme Court Justice you will see why race is not an issue. It would not surprise me if we have a non white
Supreme Court Justice within the next four years.

@Billy Grahammer It's obvious. You applied to the court and didn't get the answer you wanted, most likely because you didn't submit the right form or on time.

@Billy Grahammer Legally trained how? Most legally trained people don't consider UKSC a quango court because they've had bad outcomes; nor do they call the Court of Appeal the "Appeal Court, London".
