Demonstrates how much tennis talent Kournikova had. Her main weapon was her hands and natural feel which you can't really teach. If she had concentrated more on her tennis I think she would have won some tournaments... perhaps even got to some more slam semis and finals and maybe even won a slam in a weaker draw. Problem was she emerged at a time when tennis competition was at all time high with the likes of Hingis, William sisters, Davenport, Capriati, Pierce, Clijsters and Henin all hitting their peaks, Seles still a force to be reckoned with and Sharapova, Dementieva, Azarenka and Ivanovic emerging. It was always going to be so difficult for her to be a world-beater unless she committed 110 per cent and put all the extra work in..in gym, on court and mentally. Still a wonderful player to watch with some lovely variety 🙂

There's about 1,800 players on tour today with only about 1,100 good enough to have a ranking. She made it to be ranked number 8.

Anna had a really good game. Exciting net approaches and a killer backhand. Very athletic too, but never was consistent enough and double faulted a ton. Wish she had won more. Graf was just to consistent and aggressive. Never committed unforced errors.

Years ago I played tennis on courts in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan that were near railroad tracks. When a train came by it was deafening! There was a young blonde girl who was maybe 11 or 12 that would often take lessons there. She always had an entourage with her, and she was also very good. I learned years later that Anna Kournikova practiced there when she was a junior, so I'm pretty sure it was her.
I hate to break it to you, but Anna moved to the US at age 10 and lived and trained at Nick Boliteri’s tennis academy in Florida, why on earth would you think she’d end up in Michigan lol😂

This was during the summertime, and she no doubt went to Florida when Michigan weather got cold. Fedorov was the star player for the Red Wings, and was very popular. I have no idea how the connection was made, but Anna and her mother came to the Detroit area where Fedorov lived. When Anna got older she became his girlfriend, but it didn’t last. There’s probably a story on the Internet about it.
Anna Kournikova...the one who started the Russian brigade in Tennis. It was just unfortunate she was in an era where there are many legendary players. The peak Kournikova can crush some of the top tenners today. Her net defense is pretty good and the backhand is wow. It does not really hurt that she plays with as little noise as possible. No one, not even Sharapova can match what she's brought to Russian tennis and for women's tennis too!
Steffi was the best to play the game. The 99 French Open was a great tournament for her. She beat Kournikova, Davenport, Seles and Hingis for the title.

Anna was a pretty good athlete, and somewhat of a natural at tennis. The fact that she could hold her own against one of the best players as she did here says a lot. The problem is she could never hone her weak points to where they were equal to her strong areas. I liked watching her play, although it was frustrating that she didn't win a lot more.
