It's the undeniable fact none of the major production houses can stand to admit: *good writing is cheap.* Hundreds of millions of dollars cannot turn a bad script into a good movie, but a million dollars spent on the right people will get you one hell of a script.

    • @sterling7
      @sterling7 2 месяца назад +24

Conversely, though, you can set a dozen good writers on a script and through some foul alchemy end up with something that brings the worst out of every single one of them. Too many cooks, etc. Some writing teams have good synergy, some don't, and it's unfortunate that much of the studio brass seems to have little ability to recognize which is which.

Other reviewers, including those celebrated highly in this arena, in my personally estimation, fall drastically short to your insights. In your barbie video when you diagnosed why barbie was so popular in the first 50 seconds with "it's girly" I paused the video and screamed. I have been having this argument with other writers for months now, and you are the first person I have seen to call it dead on. This video was not only an interesting commentary on creative works and how they are corrupted, but your finale to this video genuinely made my heart ache. As to why Barbie was massively successful alongside Oppenheimer? Also, DEAD ON. It's the first movie in a LONG while I can think of that caters to girls (little girls), girl girls (teens to young adults) and grown women wanting to relive their girly-ness. "Girls just wanna' have fu...un" comes to mind. Barbie allowed women of all ages to go back to a time before they had to work hard like men, act like men, think and talk like men and just ESCAPE into being super FEMININE for once, to be in their true nature/essence, without judgement or fear.

I personally think Bryan and Mike leaving doesn't play as much of a factor in the show's mediocrity as people think. If we look at something else they did together, The Legend of Korra, they can take things down a divisive route as well. The failings of both shows come down to the loss of this duo of writers from the original series: Aaron Ehasz and Elizabeth Welch - formerly Ehasz.

He was one of the -head- writers and a one of the executive producers of the show, working on and involved with nearly every single episode, 13 of which he personally wrote. That is more than "a couple of episodes". And I was not stating that either were directly responsible for everything about the world--only that their loss, in my opinion, led to a drop in quality of the writing and story coherency. Creators of worlds deserve full respect for bringing their universes into existence. I like how you veered into an uplifting ending.
To many essays from those of us on this side of the culture war focus on the doom and gloom of the deconstruction of our heroes and franchises.
Though certainly depression is justified, we all need a glimmer of hope. Inspiration to create something new to cherish.

9:28 - 10:51 Many of the words you said here and what you said after that, perfection. "Good stories speak to us. These are the moments that stay with us. Because we don't want to be pandered to or reprimanded. We want to be taken for an adventure, fantasized as our favorite hero. We want to feel. We want connection and a connection has nothing to do with a color of someone's skin and everything to do with the skill and talent of the writers, the directors, the actors, the animators, all the artist that come together to create magic and that's what's missing from these modern movies and tv shows." Brilliant words.

I'm gonna be a buck-fifty with you, are we really going to disregard how Brian and Michael completely butchered Korra? While the live action show is not very good under Netflix there was no guarantee that the show was going to be any better with Brian and Michael at the helm just because of their track history with the sequel to the original show.

I may be wrong but I remember something that they wanted to expand the character and more season but the production was doing something similar to what's happening again. everyone seems to forget that it was the head writer, Aaron Ehasz, was the one who really wrote all the characters of ATLA well. Mike and Bryan did the animations and stuff. But Aaron did the writing. And he did it well. There's a clip of him going over how he wrote the lore behind Katara's necklace. That alone shows his capabilities

I liked Korra. I liked how rough around the edges she was. I liked how her story showed some avatars were more fiery and more brawler-like than Aang and Roku, who are indeed the GOATs.
I think the idea of EVERY Avatar being a stoic, calm, cool character is boring. Some HAD to be fuck ups, right? Some HAD to take longer to grow. You’re gonna give ultimate power to ONE person and it’s NOT going to produce a jackass every now and then? Not one?
Is she perfect? Or even the best? Hell no. And that’s EXACTLY why I like her.

It felt like the first half of season 1 was up to standard, and then their prep time was basically all used up and they had to wing the rest of the show. They had some halfway decent ideas, and they've even done good stuff in the comics after leaving TLA, but it's clear that if you don't give them adequate time and space, they will flub it.

Your scripts are always so wonderfully written. Many people (an ever increasing amount, thankfully) are waking up to the many issues plaguing the entertainment industry and modern Hollywood, creatives, and celebrities (and perhaps even society at large), yet very, very few manage to put all this into words so eloquently and fluidly. Your pacing, your talking points, your dynamic examples. It all flows so well, and it shows how much time you put towards it.

Nietzsche wrote about this in his book, "Twilight of the Idols". To paraphrase, people can be divided into 2 groups: the artists, and the anti-artists.
Artists are filled with richness and life. They are so filled with power that they NEED to create things. They NEED to share their richness with others.
Anti-artists are hollow on the inside. They are so empty that they NEED to find anything and everything and suck the life out of it.
We are living in an age of anti-artists. Greedy people take our favorite art, suck it dry to make a quick dollar, then fill it with "diversity" because that is the socially acceptable way to give back as little as possible.

Your INCLUSION of Éowyn, Merry and Éomer made me tear up... Followed immediately by the Lion King, which made those tears spill over.
This means you created more emotion with your words and the images you chose than all the entertainment "for modern audiences" has ever achieved!
You hit the heart of the matter. 09:56 "Good stories aren't obsessed about what makes us all different. Instead, they focus on our universal experiences."
    And Boom!
10:02 Rohirrim. (Have you seen the videos where Tolkien's voice is reading Ride of the Rohirrim while movie footage plays? There are two on RUclips and they're beautifully made.)
You're the first person to truly compare what works for victim points on social media, yet why it fails spectacularly when it comes to storytelling.
You also correctly identified the need for hard work, which is also the theme of:
"Call me Chato" Mar 24 2024 video about a Canadian govt-funded media company, POV. They had a commercial featured during an NHL game in which a lady of colour declares that "BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folk" don't have the "privilege" that "straight white males" have in the entertainment industry. (She does not specify whether she means the Canadian entertainment industry but that is implied.) She concludes with: "Stop hiding from our industry's lack of diversity and go to POV to pledge to help fix it." "Cheque Your Privilege"
I thought of his video immediately when you began to talk about why "diverse voices" are considered so important. (In his video, he starts to review the commercial at 5:21, although the intro of what he says is definitely worth hearing first.)
"Call me Chato" is a former network executive and therefore has a truly unique perspective because it includes career experience in the industry.
You are a treasure. I really hope you found your car and were able to get home!
    Best wishes!! 🙏🥹💐🧡🐰🥕☀️

In the movie/TV industry, it's always been, if you want to win big, you gotta gamble. I think the MCU era convinced Hollywood that if they just find the right formula people love then they can print $$$ forever without risk. Turns out that was a limited time phenomenon. Now we're back to having to take risks with new projects, and that means sometimes they'll fail even if they do give the creators full artistic control.

The real issue with Netflix's Avatar the last airbender series is they have effectively surrounded themselves with "yes men." The result is an uninspired circle jerk. And the actual result is nothing more than flat out "BORING" on all counts. The recent Gollum video game has more plot and structure than Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Live action. And the main issue is most executives get overly focused on just shotgun blasting fans with content they don't want period.

One thing I noticed when I came to the US and worked on several projects that were failures was the corporation doing almost everything via committee. It's almost as though no one wants to paint a target on their back for a failing project so they default to sticking in a pack like a bunch of wildebeest trying to avoid the crocodile just below the water line. I remember thinking to myself all those years ago, in a huge corp, the feminine consensus model is strong here. The operating committee, the people committee, the technology leadership, on and on and on.

I think thats very telling of their life experience. I wonder if their childhoods shielded them from hardships, and so they accidentally lack empathy and understanding towards the human condition.

First, I was excited to see you posted videos two days in a row! Thank you, Baggage Claim!
Anyway, I couldn´t agree more about _Wish_ . I wanted to like it; I really did. But it´s underwhelming. I just wasn´t awed and thrilled the same way I was when I first saw Disney Renaissance´s films, particularly _The_ _Hunchback_ _Of_ _Notre_ _Dame_ (1996) , _Hercules_ (1997) and _Mulan_ (1998) .
I recently rewatched _Hercules_ (1997) and was reminded why it´s perfection.
The protagonist´s practically a god, a ridiculously strong one, kind too. But EVEN HE had to go through a literal hero´s journey. Despite his good heart, he wasn´t without character flaws, and didn´t initially get the true meaning of heroism. In contrast, Asha´s without faults or mistakes.
The heroine and supporting characters also go through rigorous character arcs of their own. At the end, they all emerge transformed, and for the better. In contrast, Asha´s friends possess neither distinct backgrounds nor clear characters of their own. Why they´re memorable is lost on audiences. Seems they´re only there to be Asha´s sidekicks, check all the boxes and nothing more.
And don´t get me started on the antagonist and his minions. They´re arguably the best villains ever. Hades, Pain and Panic are, by turns, tremendously funny, really witty, truly terrifying and most of all, relateable. In contrast, King Magnifico´s history, personality and intents are confusing. The film opens with his tragic, traumatic past but it doesn´t tie in with the rest of the story.
