    I really dig the whole "adventurer running from danger" origin. Could make for a way to introduce a new character, party finds a bag of holding, opens it up, and out crawls someone who's been trapped in there for who knows how long.

    • @TheNewton
      @TheNewton 3 года назад +2

      Like Samuel Jackson in Predator, really just wants the parties stuff to decorate the bag.

    I like to imagine that the bag man can open holes in bags of holding and sew them back up. Theoretically a party could follow them and find some kind of network of cloth tunnels connecting to different bags of holding across the multiverse. And outside of the bags and tunnels is a void, and something enormous is swimming out there... something hungry (the bag of devouring entity)

      Along the lines of what I was thinking . Go kind of umbral tunnel system. Morlicks and eloi?

    Thief walks down the street and stops. He had noticed a familiar twinkle in the dim light down a dark alley. Curiosity and greed get the better of him as he follows the twinkle. Once he is close enough he realizes what got his attention was a small trail of gold coins. At the end of the trail is a small bag.
    With a grin, the thief picks up the coins, one by one, and places them in his pocket. What a day. Some poor soul left him a small donation to his bar tab.
    Once he reaches the bag he grabs it and lifts the flap to reveal the contents. But the grin is replaced with a confused scowl. There was no twinkling, just a black void do to the poor light.
    Squinting, the man looks closer. Maybe the coins are under something.
    That's when two hands grasp goth sides of his head. Fear didn't set in until his head was half way through the bags opening. When he screamed, his mouth was already covered by the bags cloth. Buy the time his arms tried to push the bag away, it was already half way over his torso. When the legs started to move, there was a sickening CRUNCH!
    A bag falls to the ground with the cloth making no noise. The fabric moves as if containing a small animal, and not long after it regurgitates a few coins, the movement stops.
    The Bagman waits.

    I have been theory-crafting an Undead Warlock who utilizes a Portable Hole for Short and Long Rests, and has his Invisible Undead Imp familiar carry it around invisibly during those times. I think is where that character is heading, eventually. 💀

    I’ve been playing with the idea of Phase Spiders hunting on the border of the Material Plane, but laying their eggs on the border of the Astral... sometimes, *in* your bag of holding. You reach in and grab your tools, only to discover they are covered in a swarm of baby Phase Spiders.

  • @theblindbuildergrandminuti5648

    I’d give a bag man race an small size with +5ft reach to give them a crazy lanky limbs.
    Give them built in alchemy infusion ‘many-handed pouch and bag space that is in wired places.
    You could have a side show background as a sword swallower and say you had a ‘costume’ you preformed in… but you are the costume.

  • @Samhain_III
    @Samhain_III 3 года назад +9

    You could use this as a "fun" devise to introduce a new charakter into a group, especially in very closed off campaigns (Icewind Dale, Avernus, ...) You could use a reborn or warforged in a bag of holding, or a djinni-warlock in his lamp (if you ignore the time limit) that is trapped and possibly in a pile of loot. This would be a nice alternative to your usual need to introduce a new charakter.
    Imagine one hero dies during a fight (without a possibility for reviving him) or a new player joins right after a fight. The party finds a bag of holding / a lamp in the pile of loot and decide to open it / unseal it. And out of pops your new charakter. As a bonus you already have a reason for this charakter to join the group since they freed him/her.

    I’m thinking a echo knight, gloom stalker with 1 lvl in undead warlock. The echo can be like a shadow, moving between different spaces, playing tricks on the eyes, hiding in the shadows waiting for that moment to strike, pop form of dread, and this fearful boogie man has you! I’d go as far as to consult with the dm, and role play a companion whom this being has sway over, while carrying the bag of holding.Disposable, but can still play into your overall true narrative.

    At the part where they discussed "an entity talking to you in the shadow within the Bag of Holding" I was thinking about a warlock.
    Imagine that your pc was running away from danger and got into the bag; some time there and their soon-to-be patron starts talking to them. And they make a deal to turn the pc into a reborn and give them powers so they don't die within the bag, but as soon as they get out they gotta figure a way to get this favor back to their patron. Maybe getting a certain item into the bag for them, or figuring out a way to get them out.
    I think that'd be interesting!

  • @seanmcgcostumes

    I genuinely love this idea so much. It's brilliant. But it can also be weaponized: have an NPC Reborn trapped in the bag when players find it, see what shenanigans ensue.

      Bagglenag - Offers to help you navigate the domains of dread ... for a price. Kinda does what you wanted him to do but constantly endangers the party in unexpected ways.
      And don't forget to add an old disgruntled mentor with a strong bureaucratic flavour.

  • @robbobin
    @robbobin 3 года назад

    My favourite character I've played in one-shot was a warforged artificer who spent 90% of his time in a bag of holding (until combat started). My DM kindly allowed me to roleplay his homunculus toolbox - a tough new yorker type called Stanley. The gang would have to kindly petition the artificer to join in encounters because he was always busy inventing.
    Point being, roleplaying the homunculus would be a nice way to sidestep the problem of not being involved in group discussions, and also lend an even greater air of mystery to the bagman, since he's seen so rarely.

    Aspect of the Moon invocation: Doesn't need to sleep.
    Introduction: You find a Bag of Holding with a tag saying "Property of [Character Name]." Once when you are searching the bag, you ask out loud "who is this [Character Name] who last owned this bag, I wonder?" Out falls the character, seeing daylight for the first time in what's probably a veeery long time.

    omg this gives me great ideas! I am playing a Varden Artificer and would be cool if he dies I talk to my DM about becoming a reborn! I can imagine him having a workshop essentially within his bag!
    AS far as the bag of holding dark gift idea I like this idea but the body spewed out is more like an extension rather than you so you would have odd eating habits and what not like scarfing up a whole human body flesh, bones, guts, and all for making future bodies to form your extension if it gets destroyed or damaged. This would make a very cool alien mentality seeing the dead as materials like a necromancer without the necromancer tendencies.

    The end conversation made me wonder about making a mimic character. I know some species are automatically non-playable due to them not being sapient, but that would get around some of the metagame issues. could make it part of the character traits that they prefer to be in "item" form in crowded places (loud taverns where meetings are held) or they could be a rogue class and that could be a way for them to gather intel.

    It's a shame that the bag of holding only opens up to about 2ft wide so you'd probably have to play a gnome sized reborn to barely fit into the bag if going by the RAW standard description of the item unless you do something like max level moon druid and turn into an air elemental and just permanently stay in that form since you'll be able to squeeze down to size and won't need to eat, drink or breath as an air elemental then you can get around that issue or just get a portable hole and close it from the inside
