You were recommended to me by a friend who has just taught me how to weave. I found a small plastic loom at a charity day, and took it home to play with. I worked it out, then the light bulb moment hit, and I thought Oooooo I could do this on a larger loom. So I purchased an Ashford 16" Sampleit Loom. My first project was a table runner, and I was very happy with it. Then because it was so awkward to carry to craft meetings I purchased a 20" Ashford Knitters Loom. I got a bit cocky, and tried to warp the knitters loom on my own. Big mistake. I have tried twice to get it right. The first time the yarn was too thick for the heddle, then the next time I put the cardboard strips on the wrong end. I have tried to save it, but not sure if it can be saved. I am a bit flustered by your reference to all that math. I just decided to use one yarn cake for the warp, and the same yarn in a different colour for the weft. Enjoying your video's though.
It sounds as if you're at the start of a very exciting journey, don't worry about the things that haven't worked this time, you won't make the same mistakes again, we've all done it! You can rescue a warp, you can pull it all through the heddle onto the other roller then take it back, with the paper or card strips on the back roller. I had to practice warping on my own loads before I was happy with it, having a friend to start can really help though. Wishing you lots of happy days weaving, Sarah ☀️
I have 12" floor tiles, a dining table, dining chairs with knobby tops to use as my peg and measure accordingly. I don't like to complicate my life. Measuring is so easy for me.
I am so happy I found your channel. My cousin gave me her floor loom, but I had never done any weaving. To learn the process I purchased a fifteen inch Cricket loom and have been learning the basics. One thing no one could tell me was what I could make. It was usually scarves and table runners for the small loom and rugs or blankets on the floor loom that I feel so inept to even try. Your videos have shown me that even small looms can be used to make useable items. I am so grateful to you for providing that insight.😊
That's so exciting! I have floor looms too, I love them but I use my rigid heddle looms far more often. My next video is about making a garment even if your fabric is too narrow for your project, you might find some useful tips. Happy weaving!

Thank you! Nice, clear description of the RH "hybrid" warping procedure (using a warping board instead of a warping stick). The creeping loom trick is an excellent tip! As an extra precaution (I have a kitty and once had four), when I thread the holes, I tie each bout of threads (about an inch each) into an overhand loop (not a knot). The secured bouts of threads cannot slip back through the heddle. This also allows me to pull the freshly secured bout of threads taut while lifting and lowering the heddle to check that the threads in the bout creates a clean shed. Doing this for each bout as it is completed is a good way to check for threading errors as you go. Thank you, Sarah, for yet another excellent video.

I am so excited to have found your channel! Please keep posting videos, as you can. As a spinner and sewist myself, I am excited to have support in going beyond scarves in my step into weaving. I have a 32 inch Ashford rigid heddle loom and hope to get it warped again next week. I also want to get a smaller, probably 16 inch, RH to have a more portable, lap size. @StarKnits I have something on already so it won't be for a while yet. I keep the same threading, cut off at the front of the reed, tie a new warp on and wind onto the back roller through the reed and the heddles. Saves a lot of time!

I set my loom on my wrought iron deck table and when I wind on, hold the loom and scoot the table across the deck towards the railing where I've clamped my warping pegs. I also direct warp outside on nice days, even when I already have other projects going. I think, "Oh it's a great day for warping." I rarely have a "naked" loom in the house :D
Hi Sarah, thank you for this video. I've just shown it to my husband, in hopes that he'll be able to make me a peg frame like yours. I take a small bunch- no more than an inch wide- take them over the front stick, underneath and split the bunch in half, up around the sides of the bunch then half a reef knot. Tie all the warp in a single knot then go back and re- tension equally on each side, tying the 2nd half of a reef knot, finishing on the edges.

It turned out quite well and I’ve cut my next shirt out already, I was sewing the seams this afternoon. I have a tall stack of handwoven cloth that I’ve made over the years, but I just couldn’t bring myself to use them. Now I am 😊 Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you for this video, Sarah. It’s always great to have warping tips! I’m curious to know…do you just do the double knot into the apron bar? I somehow picked up that I had to tie a bow too🤷🏼♀️ but I’m guessing that’s not necessary? I love the colours of the warp…I look forward to seeing the skirt!
I just do a double knot but I guess you could do a bow, except that would take quite a lot more warp. It's possible that the bow might lie a bit flatter too; to combat a bump from my knots I also wind a sheet of paper at the start of my weaving.
I also have a 20" ashford knitters loom so am excited that you make your clothes from cloth woven on this loom. I have been weaving for a couple of years but mostly make scarves although recently I have graduated to using 2 heddles to weave different patterns I would love to have a go at making a jacket. Where do I buy your patterns and what size do they go up to? I am also a spinner and love the softness of hand spun yarn. I have spun about a kilo of fleece to knit a jacket. I'm now thinking maybe I should weave it up and make something instead. Do you use commercial yarn for warp with handspun?

A "naked" loom is so sad! I try to put a new warp on as soon as the old one comes off, phew 😊

I know a lot of people who use that method, it's called leashing. I prefer the way I do it!

I've wove since 1991. I have not used a warping board since 1993.
I like the extra length it gives me if I'm warping up indoors, and it keeps my long warps under manageable tension.
